Bobby Reid Now Says Gundy's Famous Tirade Was 'All a Front'

We'll never forget Mike Gundy's famous rant in which he informed the world that "he's a man and 40." Now, the player he was defending is suggesting that Gundy is actually just a man and a phony. That's right, former Oklahoma State quarterback Bobby Reid and his mother recently accused Gundy of putting on an act on that fateful day.
"Reid was caught off guard. Here was a coach who'd been burying him and now he was going to war for him? It didn't add up. "At first, everything [Gundy] was saying sounded real and true," Rajika says. "But I'm a believer where there is smoke, there's fire."

In other words, Bobby and Rajika Reid felt info in Carlson's column came indirectly from Gundy or his staff. ("I'd have a hard time agreeing with that," Gundy says.)

In other words, they felt Gundy's rant was fake.

"Honestly, the way I took it, I felt like it was all a front," Reid says. "That it was all a big show. It didn't feel genuine."

2008 NFL Draft Irrelevant Decision: QB Bobby Reid Transfers to Texas Southern

A look at the 2007 junior class as players decide whether to enter the 2008 NFL draft.

Most people who know who Oklahoma State quarterback Bobby Reid is only know him for the infamous rant from Oklahoma State coach Mike Gundy after a newspaper columnist ripped Reid.

But over the last week Reid has made news again. First he said he would declare for the 2008 NFL draft, and then he said he would instead stay in school, transferring to Texas Southern, where he will presumably be the starter in 2008 for a team that went 0-11 in 2007.

It's an interesting story from a college perspective, but as far as the NFL draft is concerned, this is an irrelevant move. Reid wasn't going to be drafted in 2008, and barring something unforeseen happening, he's not going to be drafted in 2009, either. For that reason, he made the right decision to stay in school. But it really has no impact on the draft.

FanHouse's Top Five: Mike Patrick Is No Perez Hilton, but He Sure Is Trying

FanHouse's Top Five scans the sports blogosphere for the best posts of the last 24 hours so you don't have to. Got something for this feature? Hit us up at fanhouse@googlegroups.com.

1). There are few football analysts commentators worse than Mike Patrick. Formerly teamed with Joe Theismann on ESPN's Sunday Night Football -- before it became Football Night in America -- Patrick was one-half of the most knock-you-over-the-head team in professional football. "Now, look at this play right here. You see what I'm doing right here -- I'm showing you things that are so obvious no one could have missed them, yet I can't find anything else insightful to say, so I'm going with it! And then I hit the sweet spot right ... here! Look at that play! Wow!" Ugh.

So it's good to see that, since demotion to the college football ranks, Patrick isn't even trying anymore; he's just musing about whatever he feels in the most crucial moments of football games. This week? Britney Spears' life. Next week? Scones? 780p vs. 1080i? The influence of Eastern philosophy on web-based social networks? The possibilities are endless!

2). Speaking of brilliant college football video, Oklahoma State coach Mike Gundy's legendary defense of quarterback Bobby Reid -- in which he berates columnist Jenni Carlson to her face about "having children one day" -- is a must-see. And after reading Carlson's column, not exactly unwarranted. (Aside: At the end of the video, who, exactly, is clapping? Certainly not the media, I'd hope.)

3). Weirdly, instead of fixing the things that are bothersome about the next-gen versions of Madden 08 (players seem slow, juke moves are too effective, TOO MANY FUMBLES) EA Sports is rolling out yet another NFL game. Wha?

4). I recreationally hate Ohio State, but I have to admit: they are good this year, and not getting much buzz for it.

5). Dude, if you're going to rock an A-Rod jersey -- and I love the WBC idea, too -- please make sure it's spelled correctly.

Bobby Reid Ready to Shine, but Zac Robinson Won't Go Away

Oklahoma State quarterback Bobby Reid is hoping to build on a successful 2006 season. A year ago the athletic junior threw for 2,226 yards and 24 touchdowns. This season he's hoping to improve his control of the offense.
"I expect more out of myself and more control of the game," the junior added. "I want to start dictating things more and I just want to be more efficient than I was last year."
Cowboys head coach Mike Gundy appears to be high on Reid's abilities this spring.
"Bobby is better now than he was at the end of the year. He's doing a better job of engineering and controlling the offense. He's more confident now and if he continues to run the ball like he has in the last four or five practices, he'll be able to create a lot of problems for a defense."
Despite the superlatives, Gundy isn't entirely ready to dismiss the two-quarterback system he employed a year ago. That means fans can expect to continue to see sophomore Zac Robinson.
"We'll have six or eight plays a game with Zac in there because he's a good player and he makes plays," Gundy added. "The more playing time he gets will help him. ... There's no substitute for game experience."
It makes sense to get both quarterbacks on the field, especially given the success the Cowboys enjoyed in 2006. Reid appears capable of carrying the team, but Robinson has also shown the ability to step up, including completing 8/17 passes for 149 yards against Oklahoma a year ago.
