Who Needs Jake Peavy? Braves Land Javier Vazquez Via Trade from White Sox

Wait, what?

Were the Braves really this far away from landing Jake Peavy via trade that they had to settle on Javier Vazquez?

Pending a passed physical from Vazquez, that's exactly what has happened. Boone Logan is headed to Atlanta with Vazquez, while the package headed back to the White Sox includes Jo-Jo Reyes and Brent Lillibridge. Reports indicate an unnamed "top prospect" is going to Chicago as well.

The trade has been in the works for a few days, and rumors were no secret. It should be noted that neither Reyes nor Lillibridge have been the centerpieces in talks by the Braves to acquire Peavy. On the other hand, we know the Braves are interested in signing either Derek Lowe or A.J. Burnett.

I'd be pretty surprised if the Braves traded these two young players, inked a Lowe-type contract, and traded the required windfall to net Peavy.

Thus, the significance of this deal -- to me -- is that it effectively eliminates the Braves from the Peavy sweepstakes.

Scott Podsednik Keeps Pulling His Groin

Groin problems are nothing new to Scott Podsednik. He has had groin problems the last three years, and they were a big reason why the White Sox lead-off hitter struggled so much in 2006. During the offseason Podsednik had to have surgery on a sports hernia in January.

This time Pods hurt his right adductor muscle on Monday after he slipped during a drill. He has been placed on the 15-day disabled list. Fifteen days would be a very optimistic assumption, and it's more likely that Pods will miss at least a month of playing time.

It's not good news for the White Sox as Podsednik has been the only member of the team that isn't struggling with the bat right now.

''Every time you lose a player, a guy playing every day, it's hard,'' Guillen said. ''Do I have people to replace him? Yes. Are we going to miss him for a couple days? Of course. But having [Rob] Mackowiak here, having Brian [Anderson] to back him up in the outfield, we don't have that much of a problem.

''But the way he was playing, it's a shame. A player has a day off and gets hurt on their day off -- that's amazing. That's the way we roll.''

The White Sox called up lefty Boone Logan from AAA Charlotte to replace Podsednik on the roster.

Aaron Rowand To Return To Running Into Chicago Walls?

It appears that the Philadelphia Phillies are looking to trade Aaron Rowand as they look for middle relief help, and anytime Rowand's name is mentioned in trade talks, the Chicago White Sox always seem to pop up.

Whether it was last season at the trade deadline, or this offseason when the Sox sent Freddy Garcia to the Phils, it seems both teams are determined to make this happen. There haven't been many players more popular on the south side of Chicago over the last ten years or so, and in fact, I'm wearing an Aaron Rowand shirt as I write this.

The trade is rumored to be something to the effect of the Sox sending lefty Boone Logan to Philly for Rowand. It would make sense for both teams since neither Brian Anderson, Jerry Owens, or Ryan Sweeney have done anything to convince the Sox they have a centerfielder, and with Andrew Sisco and Matt Thornton already in the pen, the Sox don't need any more southpaws in there.

Ken Williams, as always, is not confirming or denying anything.

''I can't give you any direction on any of that because tomorrow it will be something different,'' Williams said. ''The next day it will be something else. After all, it has been pointed out to me that I have made the most trades [51] the last six years, so with that comes a lot of speculation.''

Seeing as how this trade makes sense for both teams-the Phillies have Shane Victorino ready to take Rowand's place-I'm crossing my fingers that this deal goes through. Yes, it makes it a lot harder for me to type, but that's just the kind of dedication I have.
