Kevin Harvick Gets Past Dale Earnhardt Jr. Late to Win Nationwide Race

HAMPTON, Ga. (AP) -- Dale Earnhardt Jr. won a late gamble on gas, but that wasn't enough to overcome Kevin Harvick's dominance.

Harvick led most of the race and then passed Earnhardt with two laps left to regain the lead and win the Degree V12 300 Nationwide Series race on Saturday night at Atlanta Motor Speedway.

Harvick and Kyle Busch each went into the pits for gas and four tires with 14 laps remaining. Earnhardt and Brad Keselowski stayed on the track, gambling they had enough gas to finish the race.

Mark Martin Staying Full-Time in 2010

For one driver, getting older in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series just means getting better.

50-year-old Mark Martin will drive the full 2010 schedule in the Hendrick Motorsports No. 5 car, according to the Associated Press. Martin returned to full time competition in 2009 with a two year deal at Hendrick after running partial schedules since 2007, and it was originally expected that 2010 would be another partial schedule for the driver.

While the news may be good for Martin fans, surprise Talladega winner Brad Keselowski is now somewhat on the outside looking in for 2010 if he wants to pursue racing in NASCAR's top division.

Q: What was your first reaction to all of the events and drama that Talladega produced this weekend?

Holly Cain: The accident began only a few yards below my seat in the Talladega press box. At most tracks, the press box is an elevator-ride atop the grandstands, but at Talladega it sits only about 15 rows up.

The last lap was sensory-overload, but that's what you expect at Talladega.

Blame NASCAR for Edwards' Scary Ride

Let's face it: NASCAR's own rules nearly killed multiple spectators Sunday afternoon at Talladega Superspeedway.

The scary last-lap crash in the Aaron's 499 involving Carl Edwards, Ryan Newman and first-time winner Brad Keselowski is just the concoction NASCAR has cooked up with their set of rules governing the cans and cannots of racing at restrictor plate tracks.

At issue, primarily, is the much discussed yellow line rule that prohibits a driver from going below to advance a position.

Keselowski Wins in Spectacular Fashion

TALLEDEGA, Ala. -- Brad Keselowski did what any driver would do.

It was the last lap, and he had a shot to win his first NASCAR Sprint Cup race. So he held his line and powered forward.

That the ensuing collision between his Chevy and Carl Edwards's Ford as they approached the finish line resulted in Edwards taking a frightening airborne ride into grandstands fencing and injuring seven fans had less to do with Keselowski than the innate dangers of restrictor plate racing.

In fact, NASCAR started putting restrictor plates on the cars at its two super speedways in Talladega and Daytona because of a similar airborne accident at Talladega in 1987. The idea was to control speeds. Roof flaps developed in the 1990s were supposed to keep the cars on the ground.

And so the 25-year-old Keselowski, whose win came in only his fifth Cup start, didn't make apologies for the racing.

Dale Earnhardt Jr. Says No to 'Circus'; Tells Tracks to 'Get Back to Work'

Friday afternoon, Dale Earnhardt Jr. graced the web pages of Sports Illustrated after writer Bruce Martin hung around with the driver of the No. 88 Chevrolet for a day's-worth of commercial work recently.

The piece was mostly centered around Earnhardt Jr.'s status as a commercial icon and previewed an ad for sponsor GoDaddy.com that will feature fellow Hendrick/JR Motorsports driver Brad Keselowski, but as we've come to expect from Earnhardt Jr., the driver didn't hold back when asked about some comments made during the NASCAR Sprint Cup Media tour just a few weeks back.

Those comments centered around Speedway Motorsports, Inc., chairman Bruton Smith claiming that the drivers need to do a little more to help sell tickets in the struggling climate that faces the 2009 season.

Dale Jr. Keeps Old Cars in the Weeds

After reading about yet another one of Dale Earnhardt Jr.'s personal quirks, my head is still spinning.

And it's spinning because frankly I just don't get it, despite the article talking about his way of collecting old race cars like its an entirely normal thing. From the NASCAR Scene:
So whatever happened to the car that slid along the Auto Club (Calif.) Speedway wall last year, leaving a trail of flames as driver Brad Keselowski held on?

It's not at JR Motorsports.

It's at Junior's home.

OK, it's not inside the home, but it's on team co-owner Dale Earnhardt Jr.'s property. [...]

"It's a good conversation piece," Keselowski said. "It's actually out back in the woods. It's on a hill and there's vines and stuff growing through it. It's cool because Dale left it completely intact. Every single piece other than the radio is in it. It's really cool to see."
So, in short form, Dale Earnhardt Jr. collects old race cars only to leave them to rust, rot, and generally just turn to nothing on the deepest parts of his property.

Is that not at all weird?

Keselowski Takes Second Nationwide Victory

Brad Keselowski made Dale Earnhardt Jr. a lot happier Friday night at Bristol Motor Speedway.

The 24-year-old driver (who's braces make him look a lot more like 16) picked up second career win and his second win of 2008 during the Nationwide Series Food City 250 after his team owner -- Earnhardt Jr. -- qualified third-from-last earlier in the day at the same track for Saturday night's Sprint Cup event.

Keselowski Finally a Winner at Nashville

Dale Earnhardt Jr. said earlier this week that he's been a little too hard on his JR Motorsports driver Brad Keselowski.

After Saturday night, he's going to be pretty happy with his young driver after Keselowski won the Federated Auto Parts 300 at Nashville Superspeedway. It was Keselowski's first career win in the Nationwide Series.

Towards the end, the race was a lesson in fuel mileage as the leaders stretched their fuel tanks to the limit. Clint Bowyer, David Reutimann, and David Stremme all raced towards the front at the end as some late cautions allowed them to conserve fuel.

On the last restart, David Reutimann led until Clint Bowyer tapped his rear bumper to take the lead. Keselowski also got under Reutimann and stayed glued to Bowyer's rear bumper. He finally got under Bowyer with just a few laps to go and set sail for the finish line.

Bowyer and Stremme got together coming off turn four coming to the finish line, shooting Bowyer up the track. He wasn't real happy with Stremme after the event.

But for Keselowski, I'd say winning the traditional guitar trophy was much less important than the pressure he may have relieved from his owner Dale Jr.
