Houston Texans 2008 Training Camp Roundup

Okay, for those of you emailing me asking, I just got back from my vacation. My pasty blogger skin avoided sunburn, but unfortunately, almost half the group we went with got some sort of really repulsive stomach bug. I've avoided it so far and am considering covering my entire self in hand sanitizer.

In any event, here's various news I missed this last week:

* Johnson's Groin Provides Big Scare.
That's the dubiously titled article from HoustonTexans.com that describes the training camp scare that Texans wide receiver Andre Johnson had in the last public practice on Saturday. (HT video above). After having a circus catch, mid season form sort of practice, near the end he felt tightness in his groin and slowed down. He doesn't believe it was a big deal, and went to go sign autographs afterwards without limping.

Houston Texans @ Arizona Cardinals: Week Two Preseason Injury Report

Taking into account that it's the preseason, many of the players sitting on the sidelines tonight would normally be on the field if it was a meaningful game. With that said, I'm sure most fans would like to know who they should expect to see this evening. For that reason, I've done by best to create an accurate injury report -- official reports are not posted until week one of the regular season.

Arizona Cardinals:

Out: Tackle Oliver Ross (tricep), defensive end Chike Okeafor (bicep), center/guard Nick Leckey (knee), fullback A.J. Schable (foot) and defensive tackle Jonathan Lewis (knee).

Questionable: Linebacker Monty Beisel (back).

Probable: Cornerback Eric Green (leg).

Of Primary Concern: The Texans Secondary

With the Texans training camp starting today, the HoustonTexans.com website has been doing a series of articles about various position battles: tight ends, running backs, receivers, defensive backs and linebackers so far. When an official website says statements like "the defensive backfield struggled at times last season," that is usually when your Extreme Understatement Alarm should go off. (The E.U.A. should not be confused with your BS Detector though they are related and located in the same region of your brain).

Basically, the Texans have stayed fairly pat with their defensive backs and safeties. They added fourth round draft pick Fred Bennett at corner and fifth round pick Brandon Harrison at safety. The Texans continue to employ Jon Hoke as the Defensive Backs Coach, one of the few coaches who has been with the franchise since its beginning.
