Bruce Smith Charged With DUI

Bruce SmithVIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (May 15) - Bruce Smith, who was inducted into the NFL's Hall of Fame in January, was arrested Friday morning after a police officer stopped him for speeding, Virginia Beach police said.

The NFL's all-time sacks leader was stopped at 1:42 a.m. on Interstate 264, according to police spokesman Jimmy Barnes. Smith was charged with speeding, refusal to take an alcohol test and driving under the influence.

Hall of Famers Bruce Smith, Randall McDaniel Recall Past Battles

TAMPA, Fla. -- Although their careers overlapped, Bruce Smith and Randall McDaniel only played against each other a handful of times. But when it was announced today that both Smith and McDaniel had been selected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame, I asked them both what it was like to play against each other.

My Super Bowl Week Questions

TAMPA, Fla.
-- Above you'll find my questions at the Super Bowl week press conferences of Cardinals coach Ken Whisenhunt, Walter Payton Man of the Year Award finalist Matt Birk, Steelers coach Mike Tomlin and Pro Football Hall of Famer Bruce Smith.

Marv Levy Lobbies Hall of Fame Voters on Behalf of His Buffalo Bills

TAMPA, Fla. – This morning in the Super Bowl media center, I spotted Buffalo Bills Hall of Fame coach Marv Levy chatting with a couple of members of the media who are members of the Pro Football Hall of Fame Board of Selectors. A little bit of eavesdropping revealed that Levy was lobbying on behalf of some of his players, and the Bills' longtime owner.

One of Levy's old players, Bruce Smith, is eligible for the Hall of Fame for the first time this year. Smith is one of the greatest defensive ends in history, and he is virtually assured of being selected on Saturday. So Levy doesn't have a lot of work to do there.

NFL Announces Hall of Fame Finalists

On Tuesday, the NFL announced the finalists for the 2009 Hall of Fame class, a list that contains the NFL's all-time sack leader, a current owner, a former commissioner, and six first-time finalists.

The voters will select a minimum of four and a maximum of seven new members on January 31. The complete list of finalists after the jump.

Brett Favre Joins the 'Great Players Who End Career In Weird Jerseys' Team*

*-well, of somewhat recent history.

We all know that Brett Favre will play his first game as a New York Jet this week and the shock of seeing him in a non-Packers jersey will be a bit frightening (as was seeing Jason Taylor in Redskins garb). Still, it isn't like we haven't seen this before from our recently great players.

QB-Brett Favre (Jets)
RB-Emmitt Smith (Cardinals)
RB-Thurman Thomas (Dolphins)
WR-Jerry Rice (Seahawks)
WR-Chris Carter (Dolphins)
WR-Tim Brown (Buccaneers)
OT-Tony Boselli (Texans ... even though he didn't play)
OT-Richmond Webb (Bengals)
OG-Randal McDaniel (Buccaneers)
OG-Bill Fralic (Lions)
C-Mike Webster (Chiefs)

Vinny Cerrato Continues to Fail Upwards

Lost in all the talk of the Redskins coaching search is this little tidbit: Vinny Cerrato has been promoted from team owner Dan Snyder's glorified squash partner to Executive Vice President of Football Operations. Unsurprisingly, it's a newly created title (something the front office is very good at), and his duties now include: personnel, team roster, scouting and salary cap management.

Anybody with even a passing interest in Redskins football knows this is kinda curious. The Washington Times' Ryan O'Halloran adds some context to all of this:
The people I contacted around the league were not astounded but still amused by Vinny Cerrato's promotion... Cerrato had been in the background the last four years because Joe Gibbs handled the roster with beaucoup input from Gregg Williams and the other assistants. Now it's Cerrato's turn (again) to shape the roster exactly how he and Dan Snyder like it.

It's also a clear sign that The Danny is itching to re-enter the NFL fray after also playing a supporting role to Gibbs since 2004. As one reporter friend said last night, "If I'm a Redskins fan, I'm not sleeping well."

Bills Sign Third-Round Pick Trent Edwards

The Buffalo Bills signed quarterback Trent Edwards, the team's third-round draft pick out of Standford University, to undisclosed contract yesterday.

"Trent's agent recognized that getting this done early was beneficial and it enables Trent to now concentrate on football," said Vice President of Football Administration Jim Overdorf.
The Bills are still in awe that they were able to land Edwards. Some scouts had him ranked with the top 40 players and Buffalo felt as if they won the lottery when he fell to them with the 92nd overall pick.

Although Trent Edwards is currently slated as the third string quarterback, he and Craig Nall will battle throughout training camp and the preseason for the second string job. His only challenge will be picking up offensive coordinator Steve Fairchild's offensive scheme.
