Braylon Edwards Traded to New York Jets, Fantasy Football Fallout

With the announcement earlier Wednesday morning that Braylon Edwards had been traded to the New York Jets, we figured we'd fire up a mini-version of the value machine. We'll take a look at the shift in value for all fantasy relevant players on both the Jets and Braylon's former team, the Cleveland Browns, who is effected.

Braylon Edwards - Tough choice here (please note sarcasm). It wasn't possible for his value to fall any further. I do think this trade really helps him, due to his attitude. He's a selfish player who wants to be in the spotlight and there's no bigger spotlight than New York. I believe he falls in line due to the fact that he's out of Cleveland, in New York and playing for a winning team. We'll place him in WR3 territory for now, with the chance to move up to WR2 by season's end.

Spinning the Last-Round Circle

One of my favorite moves on fantasy football draft day is taking a late-round gamble and letting everyone else laugh at me. You can have the first round, just let me pick late. To illustrate, here's an actual message board post last season after one of my drafts: "Commish Snyder purposefully did not draft a kicker so he could take a flier on yet another long shot (Steve Slaton of the Texans). I'm sure he'll say it will pay off in the long run."

My response? "I'll end up dropping Patrick Crayton (my fifth WR) for a kicker before week 1 when Slaton wins the Houston gig -- unless someone suffers a season-ending injury, in which case I'll drop that person."

Fantasy Football Team Preview: Jets

Mark SanchezWith Fantasy Football season ready to kick in high gear, FanHouse is here to preview each and every team -- one per day until we've done them all.

Meet the ...
Offense in transition. With a new head coach along with rookies at quarterback and time-sharing running back, the best work of the Jets' offense will be in 2010 and beyond. They'll look to win with defense and taking care of the football in 2009, and you know that doesn't bode well when it comes to garnering massive amounts of fantasy points.

There are finds to be had on any team, but no Jets should be taken in the first three rounds of your draft -- and that's being conservative.

Fantasy Value Machine: Thanks Carson!

Value Machine checks out the overall perceived value of fantasy players. If you want to commit a fantasy felony, you'll sell high on the up arrow guys and buy low on the down arrow guys.

Hopefully you traded Rashard Mendenhall, as we insinuated last week when we said his value will never be higher. Remember, fantasy sports are all about value and perception is reality in between games. Many owners flocked to Mendenhall last week because he was "replacing" Willie Parker. His perceived value skyrockets, which means it's the perfect time to spin him. Just keep this in mind as we move forward.

Top week four : Laveranues Coles ... He busted loose for 30 plus points in most leagues. The problem is that he didn't receive the majority of Brett Favre's attention and rarely will this result in three scores. Jerricho Cotchery, Chansi Stuckey, and Dustin Keller all take looks away from Coles. This was a one week ride, so hopefully you enjoyed it and can move him for good value this week.

Top week four : Carson Palmer ... He comes off his one good game of the season -- against a solid defense, no less -- and decides to not fully disclose his injury. Owners found out he couldn't go right before game time, and surely some guys were screwed over by this. Keep an eye on his health, because if he can come back, his owners will surely be pissed enough to deal him for less than market value.

Passed Out at Your Desk: Seriously, It's About Time to Grow Up, D.A.

Everyone needs sleep. Including fantasy football teams and one-armed men. We will now discuss some ways for you to get rest throughout Week 3. Notice what annoying word I'm avoiding. One from each major position in order of league depth; I will most certainly remind you when these people have big games on Sunday.

Mucho gusto (yes, I know it's the incorrect translation) to Shane Bacon for filling in quite well last week. As with everything else in my life this week, I blame Vegas. To the picks ...

Power Naps
Derek Anderson, QB, CLE -- Oh, how I hate you, Mr. Anderson. Oh, how I hate you so much. But yet, here we are, in Week 4 and Brady Quinn is set to take your job. And you get to play against the Bungles Part II. Now or never, sir.

Selvin Young, RB, DEN -- Well, this list is already chock full of people I drafted who haven't performed well this year. Sigh. Fortunately, Kansas City is horrible at everything, including stopping the run.

Braylon Edwards, WR, CLE -- OHMIGODBRAYLONEDWARDSISASLEEPER. Seriously, see above. Start him.

Fantasy Value Machine: Fast Willie Goes Down, Mendenhall Slides Up

Value Machine checks out the overall perceived value of fantasy players. If you want to commit a fantasy felony, you'll sell high on the up arrow guys and buy low on the down arrow guys.

We caught a glimpse of vintage Willie Parker in week one, and have since seen a steady decline. The points -- we'll round and generalize, as many leagues use different scoring formats -- have gone from 30 to 10 to 2. And now he's hurt. He will not play in week four. He didn't score a TD in the past two weeks after putting a three-score hurtin' on the Houston Texans in week one. Even if he comes back, you have enough evidence to worry about durability and week one being fluky (for what it's worth, he did have a 100-yard game in week two ... but that was on less than four yards per carry).

In light of this, Willie Parker is your top this week.

On the flip side, your top in value is Rashard Mendenhall. Fast Willie received 53 carries in the first two weeks, so you know the Steelers like to run the football. Mewelde Moore becomes the de facto backup to Mendenhall, and he's nothing more than a third-down back. Expect Mendenhall to get 20-plus touches per game while Parker sits. Also, Mendenhall's value will never be higher, because people love the "new guy" starter ... and Mendenhall's likely to get stuffed all night against the Ravens this week.

Dolphins 2008 Season Begins Like 2007 Did ... Oh, and Brett Favre! Brett Favre!

The Jets-Dolphins game was everything you could have wanted. The game went down to wire with the Jets pulling out the 20-14 victory.

Brett Favre was, at times, amazing. His two TD passes came on great plays by him: a beautiful play-action pass deep to Jerricho Cotchery and a gritty (and lucky) pass to Chansi Stuckey on a 4th-and-13. He managed the game very well and didn't do anything stupid.

Add to the fact that the Dolphins were very competitive -- which isn't a huge surprise to those who watched them last season.

Sure, Miami was a horrid 1-15 last year .. but it wasn't as if they were totally inept. They took the Washington Redskins into overtime before falling 16-13 at FedEx Field ... just the first of five games the Dolphins lost by exactly three points.

Today, the Dolphins kept that fight alive. Trailing 20-7, Miami rallied late with an amazing drive that ended with Chad Pennington's 11-yard TD pass to Derek Martin. After stuffing the Jets, Miami again waltzed down the field to the New York 18-yd line. After a couple tough incompletions, Pennington was picked off in the end zone and the game was over.

Patriots at Jets: Gameday Injury Report

New England Patriots:

Questionable - Safety Rashad Baker (hand), tight end David Thomas (foot) and defensive end Mike Wright (knee).

Probable - Quarterback Tom Brady (right shoulder).

Could Brady's shoulder really be barking, or is that just another one of Bill Belichick's mind games? You'd think the media would be all over that story if it was anything significant, but the buzz around Brady's shoulder has been quiet.

New York Jets:

Questionable - Running back Thomas Jones (calf), cornerback Andre Dyson (foot), cornerback Justin Miller (thigh), guard Brandon Moore (shoulder) and safety Eric Smith (thigh).

Probable
- Tight end Joe Kowalewski (finger), quarterback Chad Pennington (pelvis), defensive tackle Dewayne Robertson (knee), wide receiver Chansi Stuckey (knee) and running back Stacy Tutt (foot).

Although he's listed as questionable, Thomas Jones is expected to start against New England today. That's great news for the Jets, who will need a solid rushing attack this afternoon. Unfortunately, the news in the secondary isn't as promising. Even if Dyson, Miller and Smith play, they will not be 100%.

Jets Fine Chansi Stuckey for Involvement in Assault

The New York Jets have finally begun to hand out fines for the incident that occurred on May 20th which resulted in cornerback Justin Miller being arrested. The first person to receive a fine? No, it wasn't Justin Miller; it was seventh-round draft pick Chansi Stuckey.

Stuckey, who really didn't appear to have any involvement other then just being there, was fined an undisclosed amount by the Jets. No further disciplinary action is expected to be taken against the former Clemson Tiger wide receiver.

Miller's punishment has yet to be decided.

"Character is extremely important to us and personal conduct is extremely important to us," Mangini said. "I've expressed that to the team and Justin. He understands exactly how I feel. ... There's a legal process in place, we'll let that process go full course (before disciplining Miller)."
On the bright side, the league isn't expected to take any drastic action because Miller is a first time offender.
