Steve Downie Attacks Referee, Adds to Long List of Trouble-Making

Tampa Bay Lightning prospect Steve Downie is certainly no stranger to controversy, as the 21-year-old forward has been suspended multiple times in his young career for various acts of idiocy.

On Saturday, Downie, currently playing for the Norfolk Admirals of the AHL, decided it had been too long since he did something ridiculous and was given a game misconduct during a game against the Hershey Bears for "physical abuse of an official." He's facing a 20-game suspension as a result.

Newsmakers in the NHL: Boston Keeps Winning, Penguins Keep Losing

The Boston Bruins won their ninth straight game on Tuesday night, picking up a 5-2 victory in Pittsburgh. Aside from winning nine in a row, the Bruins finish the month of December with a 12-1 record, while extending their lead in the Eastern Conference to nine points over the No. 2 team, the New York Rangers Washington Capitals.

Meanwhile, on the other side of the ice, the month of December can't end soon enough for the Penguins, as they went 5-9 for the month, including four consecutive losses on home ice. Even worse, Pittsburgh has posted a 2-7 record in its past nine games at Mellon Arena. That's not good. Look, I realize the Penguins have been slow starters the past two seasons before kicking it in gear in February and March, but can you keep relying on that? Might make it a little easier on yourself to actually win some games in October, November and December because, you know, those games count too.

As for this game, Boston received a stellar effort in net from Tim Thomas as he turned aside 32-of-34 shots, while Phil Kessel, Dennis Wideman, Marc Savard, Zdeno Chara and Martin St. Pierre provided the offense. The Bruins went 2-for-8 on the power play, and scored a shorthanded goal on a 3-on-1 break in the third period, pretty much taking Pittsburgh out of the game. I think that speaks volumes about the Penguins power play when they allowed a 3-on-1 rush with the man advantage.

Highlight of the night for Pittsburgh was Tim Wallace, a recent callup from Wilkes-Barre/Scranton, who squared off against Milan Lucic and actually held his own for a while, before getting dropped by Lucic. The two teams meet again on Thursday, in Boston.

Caps Call Cavalry from Hershey

With the team reeling after a 1-3 road trip and with seven regulars out with injuries, the Washington Capitals put a call into their AHL affiliate in Hershey and called up four players to join the big club in time for tonight's game against the Atlanta Thrashers.

Arriving in Washington today are defensemen Karl Alzner and Sami Lepisto, as well as forwards Chris Bourque and Graham Mink. In order to clear the cap space the team needs for the call ups, the team also moved team captain and right wing Chris Clark and defenseman Jeff Schultz to the long-term IR.

The list of the walking wounded doesn't end with Clark and Schultz. Alexander Semin, Sergei Fedorov, Boyd Gordon, John Erskine and Mike Green are also injured, leaving some tremendous holes in the lineup that were all too apparent as the road trip wore on and the losses mounted. What should be interesting about this move is the perception that Alzner and Bourque could have very well made the team out of training camp if it hadn't been for the team's cap situation.

Hockey Night Live Blog: Caps vs. Devils

Before we get started, I'd like to say that I'm live blogging tonight in honor of the Edmonton Oilers blog Covered in Oil.

Please join me as the Washington Capitals host the New Jersey Devils. The Caps are coming off an emotional, come-from-behind 4-3 victory on the road against the Pittsburgh Penguins on Friday night and are 3-1-0. In other news, Chris Bourque, son of Hall-of-Famer Ray, will be in uniform for Washington tonight after being called up. Brent Johnson will get the start in goal tonight in favor of Jose Theodore.

Last season, Alex Ovechkin accounted for more than 47% of the team's offense, but so far he's only scored two goals in the team's first four games. If anything, it seems that other teams are keying on Ovechkin mightily, yet the rest of the offense has suddenly kicked to life. The Devils are also 3-1, coming off a 1-0 win over the Thrashers in Atlanta. Tonight is the last game of four-game road trip for them as Martin Brodeur continues his assault on the record book. He better be on his game, as New Jersey has yet to score more than two goals in a game this season.

Join us after the jump.
