It's not that the Giants' three-game losing streak has gone unnoticed. It's just that, with all the excitement over everything the Yankees have been up to, New York sports fans have had other things on their minds. Yes, they're aware, vaguely, that the Giants' defense hasn't been able to stop the Saints, Cardinals or Eagles the past three weeks. And they have seen a headline or two about Eli Manning suddenly looking much more mortal than his contract and his championship pedigree say he should. But the panic meter hasn't moved too much over all of this, because New York is still one of the few American towns in which football can take a backseat to baseball. And for the past few weeks, for very good reason, New York has been a baseball town.

That all changes this weekend. The San Diego Chargers hit town -- another dynamic offense surely licking its chops over a chance to take its turn at the Giants' battered ego and secondary. If the Giants lose again, they're looking at a 5-4 record heading into their bye week, which would mean two solid weeks of tabloid and talk show debate on the issue of "What's Wrong With the Giants?"

DALLAS -- Giants defensive end/tackle Chris Canty will miss Sunday's game against the Cowboys with a calf injury.

Canty had circled this game the moment he left the Cowboys to sign a free-agent deal in New York. Canty, a Bronx native who grew up in the Charlotte area, had battled a hamstring injury in training camp and was thought to be healthy enough for the regular season.

But Wednesday, Canty hurt his calf and missed practice the last two days.

With the Giants using numerous defensive linemen, missing Canty won't hurt as much. Using a rotation wears down offensive linemen.

Tony Romo was 16 years old the last time the Dallas Cowboys won a playoff game -- Dec. 28, 1996 over Minnesota. Since then, a span of 13 seasons, America's Team has gone 0-6 in the postseason and failed to qualify for the playoffs seven times. It's a shocking drought for a franchise with the history, and more obviously, the pride that Dallas does that there has been more recent on-field success. This is a big season in Big D, for Romo, for coach Wade Phillips, for the future of the franchise. But breaking that postseason jinx won't be easy.

On Saturday night, 49ers wide receiver Michael Crabtree will most likely miss the third preseason game of the season against the Cowboys -- and what could have been a nice homecoming.

Crabtree played high school football in the Dallas area, Carter High, and college ball at a state school, Texas Tech. He said recently that he was looking forward to getting tickets for family and friends.

But the rookie remains unsigned as of Wednesday night, and his agent Eugene Parker told FanHouse nothing has changed in terms of progress.

After four seasons with the Dallas Cowboys, defensive lineman Chris Canty is leaving town but staying in the NFC East: Canty has agreed to a free-agent contract with the New York Giants.

Adam Schefter of NFL Network and Ralph Vacchiano of the New York Daily News both pegged Canty's deal with the Giants as a big one: Six years, $42 million, with more than $17 million guaranteed.

You could use just about every adjective for "crazy" to describe the '08 Dallas Cowboys. At the beginning of the year, they were expected to produce, but never did. Quarterback Tony Romo struggled with injury issues and the ability to step up in big games. They still had a chance to advance to the playoffs but couldn't take down Donovan McNabb and company in the last week of the season. Oh, and Adam "Pacman" Jones and Terrell Owens were as psycho as ever. A lot needs to change in Dallas during the offseason to make the Cowboys a contender in their new stadium.

Quarterback: We know that Tony Romo isn't a fluke. He stepped in last year and had another fantastic season, setting team records in the process. There are questions remaining about distractions (Romessica) and winning a playoff game (none in his two years) which Romo must answer if he wants to take a place among the NFL's elite. Dallas is putting all their eggs in that basket as the only fallback if Romo gets hurt is 39-yr old Brad Johnson who isn't quite the risk taker. Heat Index: 9

Running backs: It's rare when a team loses their starting running back and everyone is fine with the position. Julius Jones is gone, but rookie Felix Jones is in. Jones (Felix) will get a ton of carries this season to keep Marion Barber fresh. Barber, who only started the Cowboys' playoff game, is the NFL's version of Mariano Rivera -- he dominates late in games and finishes drives off. Jones and Barber will combined for that classic "lightning and thunder" combo and should be quite successful doing it in what supposed to be a more run-friendly offense. Heat Index: 7
