We don't want to get too sappy, but this may be Bobby Bowden's last major primetime game as the head coach at Florida State. Mind you its on a Thursday night, but when your program takes the turn Florida State's has, them's the breaks, sadly.

Maybe ESPN will ignore the significance of it, or maybe there's a goofy showing of respect/admiration/appreciation with montages of Charlie Ward and Chris Weinke and Deion Sanders and a million other interesting players and events that have been part of the man's remarkable career.

And if all of that stuff somehow bores you, we'll also be monitoring another game starting a half hour later, No. 9 BYU at TCU. Whatever strikes your fancy, it's College Football's Monday night, and we're here to emcee.

Baseball is finally fading into the Autumn light! College football can come front and center, and with that comes many questions. Is Vanderbilt for real? It's a Fox Sports Weekend, if you are a Pac Ten fan, as four of the five conference games are being broadcast on the NewsCorp-owned cable networks, bookended by the USC Trojans' visit to Autzen Stadium and the traditional 10:15 PM Eastern Pac Ten Game of the Week between undefeated Arizona State and former contender Cal Berkeley.

Today's matchup pits the nation's second-best offense against the third best defense in the country and features two one-loss, top-ten teams. The winner controls their destiny. The loser starts to think about how many more ganes they'd have to lose to go to the Hawaii Bowl instead of the Sun Bowl.
