Gut-Check Time for Struggling Dale Earnhardt, Jr.

The good news for Dale Earnhardt Jr. is that the legions of his believers are still just that -- massive in number and faithful to his cause.

But even many of the most loyal are astounded that their beloved "Junior," NASCAR's most famous driver, isn't more than a footnote in this year's Chase for the Championship.

The most-talked about driver in NASCAR isn't being talked about when it matters most.

Brickyard Still Special for Drivers

Indianapolis NASCAR Brickyard Allstate 400INDIANAPOLIS -- It took just three hours, 28 minutes and 29 seconds to undo the 15-year love affair between the Brickyard and NASCAR.

Four-hundred miles of shredding tires and competition cautions left a lump in the throat of stock car racing at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway in 2008, and a year later, the Sprint Cup Series has returned to the disaster zone facing a myriad of questions. Can stock cars produce a good show here? Should NASCAR be at the Brickyard? And, most importantly, do drivers still feel the awe and prestige of this legendary speedway?

Yes, yes and especially yes, drivers say.

Dale Jarrett Misses Field, First Time Since 1994; Gordon Takes 4th Pole

The last time Dale Jarrett wasn't in a race Geoffrey Bodine took home the trophy. Terry Labonte, Rick Mast, Rusty Wallace and Mark Martin rounded out the top 5 in that race -- the 1994 Tyson Holly Farms 400 at North Wilkesboro.

Saturday night, those drivers will no longer get to hold that distinction. Jarrett ran a lap of 123.226, nearly 3 miles per hour slower than pole-winner Jeff Gordon, that failed to qualify him for the Nextel Cup Series event.

It's not much of a surprise to see Jarrett miss a race now, as he has used up his entire allotment of past champion provisionals early in the 2007 campaign. It is a surprise to think that it's been 424 races since DJ hasn't been around on Sunday (or Saturday night).

David Reutimann is the only Michael Waltrip Racing entry to make Saturday night's Jim Stewart/Crown Royal 400.

DJ parted ways with crew chief Matt Borland this week, and today at Richmond got a little heated after a question from a reporter about Jarrett having nearly 12 different crew chiefs over the past 5 years.

"That's because y'all count everybody that was put in for one race or another. I didn't have a thing to do with it sometimes and to be quiet honest it's not something I'm concerned with. If it takes 42 [crew chiefs] from now until whenever I don't really care what the number is," said Jarrett.

The last time Jarrett missed a race, however, he came back and won the next weekk. Hmm...

Jeff Gordon Makes 3-in-a-Row

Gordon went out 14th on the grid Friday night and held on to win the Budweiser Pole Award. It is Gordon's 61st career pole and he has now started first in 5 of his past 6 races, earning four poles. Carl Edwards will start 2nd. Scott Riggs, outside the top 35 in owner points, starts fourth and A.J. Allmendinger made his 3rd race of the year. Johnny Benson will start Saturday night's race in what will be his first Nextel Cup start since fall 2005 at Atlanta.

Four Brickyard Winners Turn Laps at Indy Tuesday

Dale Jarrett got some much needed practice time at Indianapolis on Tuesday in preparation for the 2007 Allstate 400 at the Brickyard.
"With this team, we need time on the racetrack. This was invaluable to a team like ours," said Jarrett.
Jarrett was among four other drivers from each manufacturer who were on hand to assist Goodyear in finding the correct tire combination for the July 29 race. Jimmie Johnson, Bobby Labonte, and Ricky Rudd were the other three.

The time has to be invaluable to those teams because NASCAR decided this year to remove Indianapolis from the scheduled test docket. Teams worked with NASCAR to develop testing sites for this season, and Indianapolis was removed from that list because it doesn't compare well to other tracks -- with the exception of Pocono.

The test was supposed to be a two day lapping extravaganza, but the threat of rain in the Hoosier state led to one day session.

Dr. Jerry Punch, Where Are You? [Update]

UPDATE: After chatting with Andy Hall, the manager of media relations for ESPN Communications, it seems that this break for Jerry and Dave Burns was something worked into the schedule.

"Jerry will be back in the booth at Phoenix. His (and Dave Burns') two weeks off are part of a schedule for the year that rotates time off for our announcers. Between the 35 Busch races and the 17 Cup races, we're doing 52 races this year, plus practice and qualifying shows for a lot of those, so these guys are going to be very busy," said Hall.

He also mentioned that Rusty Wallace won't be back for another ten Busch races as he covers the Indianapolis 500, with Jarrett filling in.

So have no fear, Dr. Jerry Punch will be in the booth for each Cup race presented by ESPN, and expect to see Marty Reid doing a couple of other races as well.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hidden beneath the news that Dale Jarrett will serve as a substitute for Rusty Wallace for ESPN2's Busch Series coverage on Saturday at Texas Motor Speedway, Dr. Jerry Punch isn't returning to the TV booth for a second straight week.

Marty Reid, the lead announcer for the Indy Racing League on ESPN and ABC for 2006 and 2007, will again be featured in the booth as lead play-by-play announcer alongside Dale Jarrett and Andy Petree. Reid is in the spot of Punch, the man who was originally designated for the spot for both the early season Busch Series races and the Nextel Cup series events that ESPN and ABC will cover later this season.

Say What? Martinsville Friday Quotes

Some sayings, thoughts, and quotables from Denny Hamilin's pole-winning Friday at Martinsville Speedway.

Matt Kenseth wouldn't take the blame for Dale Jarrett's spin last week at Bristol, and apparently, they haven't talked. The 17 better watch out for the Big Brown Truck Sunday because 500 laps is a long time to go without seeing every driver on the track.

"If I would have run into the back of him, I would have called him right away and talked to him about it, but I tried to pass him five or six times, and that time I had three or four feet underneath him and that was my spot, so I didn't feel I did anything wrong," Kenseth said. "I was in my spot, which was underneath him, and he came down into my lane and spun himself out, so I don't really feel like I was at fault in the incident, and I didn't see a big need to seek him out."
Denny Hamlin told reporters that the issue that caused him to fall back late in the race from the lead to 14th wasn't a fuel pump issue, rather one with fuel pick-up from the tank.

Rubbin' Is Racin': Bristol Motor Speedway

Kyle Busch was very thankful for Jeff Burton after Sunday's Food City 500. And Jeff Burton knew it:
"I could have used the bumper to move him out of the way and win the race, but I didn't want to,"
That was a concept Matt Kenseth obviously didn't understand, probably because he wasn't looking to win the race. It was a failure that ended with the driver of the big, brown truck seeing red -- and not because of the COT. Dale Jarrett was a little irritated with the Roush-Fenway driver after climbing from his wrecked race car:

"This is not the first time that (Kenseth's) done something like this. Everybody has this great vision that Matt Kenseth is this nice guy on the race track. He is a nice guy away from the track. But he's a rough driver on the race track when he doesn't have to be.

"We'll have a discussion."

Yep, now that DJ is out of the Ford camp, he's firing at will.

Bristol Post Race: Toyota

Brian Vickers was Toyota's top finisher today in 15th place. He and Mayfield's Bill Davis Racing teammate Dave Blaney, who finished 23rd, are the only two Toyota drivers that completed all of todays 504 laps.

Vickers led laps for Red Bull Racing today for the second time this season and Jeremy Mayfield, in his first season outing, also led a lap.

Mayfield cut a tire on lap 227 causing damage to the right side - he finished 18 laps down in 34th.

Red Bull's A.J. Allmendinger and Michael Waltrip Racing's Dale Jarrett were both involved wrecks and finished 40th and 42nd respectively.

Dale Jarrett blamed his misfortune on Matt Kenseth:
"I was trying to pass Kyle Petty and get in under him and then Matt Kenseth just turned me going into the corner. The car was good; I was having a good time. It's fun racing, but it's not fun when somebody does something like that. It's not the first time, but it will be the last .. You have to show some patience and here we are only 60 laps into the race and somebody does something like that ... This is not the first time that he's done something like this. Everybody has this great vision that Matt Kenseth is this nice guy on the race track, he is a nice guy away from the track, but he's a rough driver on the race track when he doesn't have to be. We'll have a discussion."
Michael Waltip and David Reuitmann failed to qualify.

The Harsh Reality
Toyota left Bristol today without a single car in the Top 35.
