Fleury Announces Retirement; Allison's Comeback Bid Falls Short

After being cut by the Calgary Flames on Friday and mulling his options over the weekend, 41-year-old Theoren Fleury announced his retirement on Monday saying, "I could not sign with another team ... I retire a Calgary Flame." And with that, a 15-year NHL career comes to a close that saw the speedy forward tally 1,088 points.

A former eighth-round pick in 1987, Fleury spent parts of 11 seasons as a member of the Flames, scoring 364 of his 455 career goals. He was a member of the Flames only Stanley Cup winning team in 1988-89, and last played in the NHL with the Chicago Blackhawks in 2003.

Meanwhile, in Toronto, another comeback attempt has fallen short, this time involving former No. 17 overall pick Jason Allison.

It Appears Jason Allison Does Not Have Superhuman Strength

We all had a good laugh over the weekend when Maple Leafs Forward Jason Allison, in his quest to complete an NHL comeback, ripped Darroll Powe's helmet apart with nothing more than his bare hands. Certainly general manager Brian Burke likes that sort of intensity, but we were curious as to how, and why, Powe's helmet came apart so easily. After all, it's not everyday that you see helmets getting split in half on the ice.

As it turns out, Allison isn't the helmet-crushing beast we thought he was, and the explanation is fairly reasonable and, probably, quite obvious.

Behold, mere mortals, the awesome, superhuman strength that is 34-year-old Jason Allison as he grabs the helmet of Flyers forward Darroll Powe and proceeds to tear it in half as if it were a piece of construction paper.

Fleury Saves Game For Penguins

Forget for one second, if you can, that Bill Guerin scored a pair of goals -- including the game-winner in overtime -- in Pittsburgh's 3-2 win over Philadelphia on Friday night. The biggest moment of this game, and the highlight of this game, was without question Marc-Andre Fleury's ridiculous save on Jeff Carter midway through the third period.
