Tiger's Wife Pregnant With Second Child

He might not have been getting it going on the golf course, but the knee seems to be fine for other activities.

DNA champion Tiger Woods announced on his website today that he and his wife Elin are expecting a second child in late-winter. Woods and Elin were married in October of 2004 and will toss the new baby, no sex yet determined, into the mix with 1-year-old Sam.
"Elin is feeling great, and we are both thrilled," Tiger said. "While my injury has been disappointing and frustrating, it has allowed me to spend a lot of time watching Sam grow. I can't begin to tell you how rewarding it is being a dad and spending time with her and Elin. The injury has been a blessing and a disappointment."
Most parents hope to mix it up, but I can't imagine the expectations and press that will come about if this kid is a boy. How soon until he is swinging a cut-down 5-iron on David Letterman?

Kerri Walsh, Misty May-Treanor Defend Their Bikinis: 'Why Don't Divers Get Questions?'

When American beach volleyball gold medalists Kerri Walsh and Misty May-Treanor visited with David Letterman, the subject of the bikinis they wear in the sand came up:

"As I watch beach volleyball, I find it more interesting than regular indoor volleyball," Letterman told his guests, clearly referring to their apparel. "Was it the International Olympic Committee that said, 'Here, wear these outfits.'"

Walsh said the bikinis just make sense in the sand. May-Treanor added, "How come divers never get questions like why don't you wear a full sweat suit?"

Good question. I'm still not totally sure why men wear shirts, though.

Shawn Johnson Tells David Letterman 'I Don't Know What to Think' About Chinese Gymnasts

American gymnastics gold medalist Shawn Johnson is back from Beijing, but before returning home to Des Moines she made a stop in New York to visit with David Letterman:

Letterman asked Johnson about the vault, and Johnson told him about the first time she tried it.

"I was like three, and I just flew over the vault," Johnson said. "My coach caught me. He didn't want me to land on my head." Said Letterman, "They deduct points if you're unconscious."

But the more interesting portion of the interview came later, when Letterman asked Johnson about the allegations that China is using underage gymnasts in violation of Olympic rules.

Biff Henderson Visits U.S. Olympians

With the Olympics starting tomorrow, the funniest thing you're going to see is this clip of Biff Henderson from The Late Show with David Letterman visiting with the U.S. Olympians:

NBC always treats the Olympians as if they're superheroes, so it's nice to see them tweaked a little bit on another network. And I loved the way Biff reacted to two-time taekwondo gold medalist Steven Lopez. (More on Lopez and his siblings is here.)

David Letterman Says Basketball Shows Why Barack Obama Is Cool, George Bush Is Not

From David Letterman last night:

Are Letterman's writers taking their cues from FanHouse, where Will Brinson noted yesterday that Barack Obama's skills on the hardwood were just a wee bit more impressive than President Bush's?

David Letterman's New Sport: Intern Jumping

David Letterman's latest gimmick is the sport of intern jumping:

It kind of reminds me of the old barrel jumping competitions from Wide World of Sports, but I have to agree with Letterman when he says that the guy who jumped eight interns could easily have cleared 12, and that makes it look a little less impressive. I'd also like to see how many he could do without the trampoline.

Annika Sorenstam Delivers Top 10 List

A day after announcing her retirement, Annika Sorenstam explained herself on Late Show With David Letterman:

Sorenstam's delivery was a little flat, and I got the feeling that she had never heard of The Hills until she was asked to make a joke about it. The funniest of the "Top 10 Reasons Annika Sorenstam Is Retiring" was probably "I want to spend more time with Brett Favre's family."

Brett Favre Tells David Letterman Randy Moss Had Nothing to Do With His Retirement

Retired Packers quarterback Brett Favre appeared on David Letterman last night, and when Letterman tried to bring up the question of whether the Packers' failure to acquire Randy Moss had anything to do with Favre's retirement, Favre shut it down:

"Randy I think is a great player and will continue to be, but believe me, that had no bearing whatsoever on my coming back," said Favre of the rumor that won't die.

Favre also said he thinks Aaron Rodgers will do well as the Packers' quarterback in 2008, and that he now spends time on his property in Mississippi doing, basically, nothing. Sounds like the retirement a lot of people want.

Chris Elliot Visits the Rangers

Know why the NHL always secretly prays for the New York Rangers to make the playoffs? Well, when you have the Rangers in the playoffs, it's that much easier for the league's PR staff to pitch folks outside the sports business to pay attention to the game.

Case in point: Periodic David Letterman guest Chris Elliot going to "visit" the Rangers during a practice at Madison Square Garden. Plenty of Rangers make an appearance, including, you guessed it, Sean Avery:

David Letterman, Billy Crystal Can't Return Maria Sharapova's Serve

Fresh off her loss to Serena Williams in the the Family Circle Cup, Maria Sharapova appeared on David Letterman last night:

Sharapova started out on the couch like other guests, but then they went outside and hit a few balls. Letterman and Billy Crystal tried, and failed, to return her serve, looking a little awkward in the process, but then Crystal put on a baseball glove and at least managed to catch one.
