Kirill Sidelnikov Tests Positive for Steroids, Blames Nasal Spray

In January, the Russian MMA fighter Kirill Sidelnikov lost a fight with the American Paul Buentello at the Affliction: Day of Reckoning event in Anaheim. This week the California State Athletic Commission revealed that Sidelnikov tested positive for the steroid Stanazolol after the fight.

Even though the 20-year-old Sidelnikov isn't a big name in MMA, his positive test was big news in the MMA community, in part because Sidelnikov has a close relationship with the world's best MMA fighter, Fedor Emelianenko. Sidelnikov and Emelianenko train together, and Sidelnikov's nickname is "Baby Fedor."

Trying to quell the controversy surrounding Sidenlikov's positive test, on Wednesday his promoter, M-1 Global, released a statement saying that Sidelnikov took the steroids unknowingly, as a result of using a nasal spray given to him by a coach who was trying to help him recover from a broken nose.

UPDATE: Paul Buentello discusses Sidelnikov's positive test.

M-1 Global's full statement is below.

Affliction MMA: Fedor Emelianenko KOs Andrei Arlovski, Retains Title

The greatest fighter in the history of mixed martial arts won again Saturday night in Anaheim, as Fedor Emelianenko knocked out Andrei Arlovski at Affliction: Day of Reckoning.

It was yet another stunning first-round win for Fedor, who looked sluggish in the early going but simply saw an opening, threw one punch, and knocked Arlovski out cold. Fedor showed again why he's a legend and retained his title as the sport's undisputed heavyweight champion.

Affliction: Day of Reckoning Plagued by Empty Seats

Tonight's Affliction: Day of Reckoning MMA show has begun, and it's stunning to see how many seats at the Honda Center in Anaheim are empty.

During the first fight on the undercard, Brett Cooper vs. Patrick Speight, there appear to be just a few hundred people in the crowd. Rows upon rows of seats are totally empty. It gives the show a decidedly bush league feel. Affliction has claimed that ticket sales are going well, and Sherdog has reported that the show has sold close to 11,000 tickets. If that's true, at least 10,000 of those ticket buyers decided not to show up on time.

Affliction Weigh In: Fedor Emelianenko 230, Andrei Arlovski 237

The fighters have all hit the scales at the weigh-in for Affliction: Day of Reckoning, and in the main event, underdog Andrei Arlovski will have a seven-pound weight advantage over No. 1 heavyweight in MMA, Fedor Emelianenko.

Arlovski weighed 237 pounds, while Emelianenko weighed 230. That's exactly where both fighters expected to be.

Seeing them at the weigh-in, it's striking how much taller and more muscular Arlovski is than Emelianenko, but Fedor has routinely destroyed taller and more muscular opponents.

Full results are below.

Andrei Arlovski: Fedor Emelianenko Fight Is Coming at the Right Time

The task ahead of Andrei Arlovski on Saturday night is as tough as it gets: Step into the ring with Fedor Emelianenko, the Russian heavyweight who is the most dominant fighter in the history of mixed martial arts.

But Arlovski told me in an interview today that he believes he's ready for Fedor, his opponent in the main event at Saturday night's Affliction: Day of Reckoning pay-per-view show. Arlovski says he's in great shape, and he believes he can beat Fedor because he has superior skills as a striker.

He also talked about his experiences in the UFC, where he's a former heavyweight champion, and why he's using YouTube and his own web site to promote the Fedor fight. The full interview is below.

Andrei Arlovski: I'll Fight Fedor Emelianenko Like a Lightweight

Andrei Arlovski says in the latest installment of Arlovski 360 that he's going to fight Fedor Emelianenko like a lightweight at Affliction: Day of Reckoning:

"I try to fight like a lightweight," Arlovski said. "I try to be fast on my feet. I try to show good technique -- boxing technique, wrestling technique, jiu jitsu technique."

Andrei Arlovski: I'm Thinking About Fedor Emelianenko, Not Boxing

We're just 10 days away from finding out who the best heavyweight MMA fighter in the world is, as Fedor Emelianenko, who's almost universally recognized as the sport's true heavyweight champion, will take on Andrei Arlovski, who's widely regarded as the sport's second-best heavyweight, at Affliction: Day of Reckoning on January 24.

But in the lead-up to the fight, something strange has happened: Arlovski has hinted that if he wins the MMA heavyweight crown, he might leave the sport to take up boxing.

Affliction Video: Vitor Belfort-Matt Lindland

Here's Affliction's hype video for the No. 3 fight on the Day of Reckoning card, Vitor Belfort vs. Matt Lindland:

This is a good fight, but it's also an example of the way Affliction is building its MMA promotion backwards: The way to build a promotion is to sign young and relatively inexpensive talent and develop it over time. But Belfort is 32 and Lindland is 38, and they've both accomplished enough in MMA that Affliction can't get them on the cheap.

But that's Affliction's problem. For fans, this is a good fight. Even if it's a fight that should have happened years ago.
