Injuries to Watch: Week 2

Donovan McNabbWhether it's torn, sprained, broken or just needs to be taped, Injuries to Watch will keep you up to date on injuries around the NFL and how they'll affect your fantasy football team.

Quarterback

Matt Cassel, Chiefs - Cassel (left knee) was limited in practice on Wednesday and is listed as questionable. But whispers out of Kansas City lean towards Cassel making it back to play in week 2. You obviously need to wait for an official word from the Chiefs before making a fantasy football decision.

Donovan McNabb, Eagles - Andy Reid hasn't ruled out McNabb playing on Sunday, but it's much too early to make a decision. McNabb sat out of practice on Wednesday even though his broken rib is feeling better. If he doesn't play Kevin Kolb will get the start.

Injuries to Watch: Week 1

Pierre ThomasWhether it's torn, sprained, broken or just needs to be taped, Injuries to Watch will keep you up to date on injuries around the NFL and how they'll affect your fantasy football team.

Quarterback

Matt Cassel, Chiefs - Cassel has been limited in practice on Wednesday and Thursday. He feels that his knee is making progress every day but head coach Todd Haley said that he and his coaching staff won't be able to make a decision on whether Cassel is healthy enough to play until Sunday.

Matt Schaub, Texans - Schaub participated fully in practice on Thursday and his ankle looks much better according to coaches. He's expected to play on Sunday.

What to Watch for in Saturday's Games That Don't Count

Matthew StaffordIt's Saturday in August.

It's time for football. Instead of coeds and keggers though, today's football players will be getting paid. That is as long as they can stay on the roster.

There are six NFL preseason games on the docket for Saturday, and a lot of questions to answer and position battles to watch over.

Summer Scramble: NFC West Burning Questions and Prediction

Larry Fitzgerald
It's July, the slowest month of the year for the NFL, and it's driving you nuts. You need a fix. A hit. Anything NFL to pull you through the dog days. FanHouse is here to help with an in-depth look at each division that should have you plenty prepared for training camp. We're calling it Summer Scramble, and this afternoon we look at some Burning Questions in the NFC West and offer a ridiculously early prediction.

Bengals Land Coles Two Days After Losing Houshmandzadeh

On Monday, the Seahawks signed T.J. Houshmandzadeh to a five-year, $40 million deal. Great news for Seattle -- Matt Hasselbeck will finally have a legit pass-catching threat (a seldom-healthy Deion Branch doesn't count) -- but the Bengals were suddenly down to Chad Ocho Cinco in the reliable wide receiver department. (Yikes.)

Apparently, the thought of starting the season with Chris Henry, Jerome Simpson and Andre Caldwell was enough to motivate historically cheap Bengals owner Mike Brown into action, presumably at the behest of head coach Marvin Lewis. Whatever the impetus, Cincy has a new-old Houshmandzadeh: Laveranues Coles. Via NFL.com's Adam Schefter, Coles signed a four-year, $28 million contract.

Waiver Wire Wonders: Week 14

Weeding through those unwieldy waiver wires requires a keen eye and a quick trigger. Thus, Waiver Wire Wonders provides a weekly snapshot of players worthy of consideration who should be available on a good portion of league waiver wires. Enjoy those pickups...

With the holiday season and the first big week of the fantasy playoffs in full effect, let's kick things off with a little scene from 'A Christmas Story'.

Mr. Parker: It's a Major Award!
Swede: Shucks I wouldn't know that. It looks like a lamp.
Mr. Parker: What is a lamp, you nincompoop? It's a Major Award. I won it!
Swede: Damn, hell, you say won it?
Mr. Parker: Yeah, mind power, Swede; mind power.

As we learned from Ralphie's old man, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. When it comes to waiver wire decisions in the fantasy playoffs, most rosters are pretty stable by now, but there are always a few holes to fill. This week, for those of you looking to fill specific needs, there are a few major prizes out there.

Derrick Ward (RB, Giants) - Derrick Ward looked like a decent add coming into this week's game against the Eagles, but with Brandon Jacobs leaving the game with an injured knee, he is officially this week's leg lamp -- a major award. Coach Tom Coughlin says he is hopeful that the injury is nothing big, but Jacobs did not return to action after injuring the knee early, so snag Ward now in case Jacobs misses some time. Jacobs has struggled this season with injuries, so it is very conceivable that this might be more problematic than the coaches are leading on at this point. In Jacobs' absence, Ward carried the ball eight times for just 39 yards. Hence, this payoff only comes to fruition if Jacobs misses action, but I think it is worth the add if you can spare a roster spot.

Injuries to Watch: Week 9

Every week when the dinner bell rings on Friday evening, we'll be here to provide you a comprehensive commentary of the key injuries for the NFL weekend to follow. For those injuries that go right down to the wire, drop by our Fantasy Fanhouse expert live chat from 10am to 1pm EST every Sunday and we'll take care of you on those bloody game-time decisions. As always, please feel free to chime in with opinions, updates, and rumors in the comments.

The Arizona Cardinals

Anquan Boldin - Anquan Boldin owners, you may now do the worm. I think it's safe to say Q is healthy again.

The Baltimore Ravens

Willis McGahee - Willis McGahee sat out of practice -- likely just for rest -- on Wednesday as he continues to play through the lingering knee issue. He is expected to start this weekend against Cleveland, which should present a good matchup.

Todd Heap - Heap is listed as questionable and has been limited in practice this week with a neck injury. Heap has produced consistently terrible numbers thus far in 2008, so don't bother holding him on the roster.

The Chicago Bears

Brandon Lloyd - Coming off a bye week, Lloyd practiced light and is questionable for week nine. While this is still a day-to-day decision, a home game against the worst team in the NFL (Detroit) provides some incentive to put the pads on and get out on the field. Keep an eye on this, but I suspect the waiting game to end this week.

Injuries To Watch: Week 8

Every week when the dinner bell rings on Friday evening, we'll be here to provide you a comprehensive commentary of the key injuries for the NFL weekend to follow. For those injuries that go right down to the wire, drop by our Fantasy Fanhouse expert live chat from 10am to 1pm EST every Sunday and we'll take care of you on those bloody game-time decisions. As always, please feel free to chime in with opinions, updates, and rumors in the comments.

The Arizona Cardinals

Anquan Boldin - After a well-timed bye week affording Boldin an extra week to rest his dome, he is expected to play on Sunday. Boldin allegedly lost about ten pounds though after having his jaw wired shut and slurping his food for two weeks. I'm in this predicament myself and plan to start him, but it's not an easy decision. If you have other quality options, it is probably worth waiting to see what he does this weekend.

The Baltimore Ravens

Derrick Mason - Unfortunately for Mason owners, who saw his value tick up after his six catch, 86 yard, one touchdown game last week, he was unable to practice this week with an undisclosed illness. Mason is not reliable enough to risk starting unless the illness dissipates completely.

The Carolina Panthers

D.J. Hackett - While I doubt too many people are reeling over Hackett's day-to-day status, he looks to be practicing lightly and should be available to play.

The Chicago Bears

Brandon Lloyd - Brandon Lloyd continues to nurse a sprained knee, so hopefully this week's bye should be the final stage in the waiting game. After a hot start to the season, owners are eagerly anticipating his return, but who knows what kind of shape he will be in upon returning.

Injuries To Watch: Week 7

Every week when the dinner bell rings on Friday evening, we'll be here to provide you a comprehensive injury report for the NFL weekend to follow.

Anquan Boldin - With a well-timed bye week affording Boldin an extra week to rest his dome, he looks to be on pace for a week 8 return.

The Buffalo Bills

Trent Edwards - Edwards is back at full speed and ready to go after suffering a frightening concussion in week 5. The Bills landed a bye in week 6, so he should be in good shape against the Chargers this week who have been disappointing against the pass.

The Chicago Bears

Brandon Lloyd - Brandon Lloyd continues to nurse a sprained knee that has kept him out of practice. It looks like yet another week of waiting for owners who hope that Brandon Lloyd will return for his ascent to Orton's #1 in Chicago.

Seahawks Fans Might Get First Glimpse of Awesomeness That Is Charlie Frye

The news continues to get worse for the Seahawks. Currently 1-3 and fresh off a 44-6 throttling at the hands of the Giants, they'll host the Packers on Sunday and there's a good chance they'll do it without Matt Hasselbeck.

The Seattle quarterback missed part of the preseason with a sore back, and he'll be a game-time decision against Green Bay after injuring his knee last weekend. Which means Charlie Frye could get his first start since that forgettable season-opening effort 13 months ago in Cleveland, when he was still considered the Browns' quarterback of the future. Sort of. (Here are the gory details, just in case you, um, forgot.)

Probability suggests Frye would fare better against the Packers than he did against the Steelers last year, but, well, I'm still skeptical. Unfortunately, Seneca Wallace, who started four games in 2006, isn't available, either; he's nursing a sore calf.

On the upside, head coach Mike Holmgren thinks Koren Robinson and Bobby Engram will start. But -- and this probably goes without saying, even though he made a cameo last week -- Deion Branch is listed as questionable. Typically, this means a player has a 50 percent chance of suiting up for the game, but this is Branch we're talking about. He might as well be on injured reserve.
