Georgia Finally Hires a Coach

Georgia fired Dennis Felton in mid-season appeared to be thoroughly botching their coaching search. They targeted Missouri coach Mike Anderson, and had to wait until he finished a strong run to the Elite Eight. In doing so, Georgia missed out on other coaches like Anthony Grant. If not for the farce of a coaching search in Arizona overshadowing things, Georgia would have been receiving plenty of ridicule.

Anderson rebuffed Georgia and the reported $2 million plus offer to stay at Missouri for a nice raise, but not what Georgia was offering. Georgia's coaching search appeared to be in disarray. As if the program did not expect to be rejected by their first choice if they overwhelmed him with cash.

Dennis Felton Fired by Georgia

Georgia basketball has struggled mightily over the past few years, and with the exception of a miracle SEC tournament run last year, Dennis Felton hasn't had a whole heck of a lot to hang his hat on.

Which explains why, after his team's seventh consecutive loss Wednesday night, the Georgia coach was fired.

Georgia Beats Arkansas, Advances to Big Dance With SEC Tournament Title

Georgia wrote the most improbable of endings to its stunning run through the SEC Tournament today, winning its third game in 30 hours to earn a spot in the NCAA Tournament.

The Bulldogs improved their overall record to 16-16, but they sure haven't looked like a .500 team lately. After an SEC season in which they won four games and lost 12, they've completed an SEC Tournament in which they won four games and lost none.

The first two of those wins were in overtime, and thanks to a tornado damaging the Georgia Dome, the final three wins had to happen over the course of just two days, with Georgia winning an almost unprecedented two games on Saturday before winning the title today.

Georgia coach Dennis Felton, who was on the hottest of seats entering this Tournament, now appears to be safe in his job. It would be hard to justify firing the coach whose team is the best story in college basketball, and that's just what Felton's team has become.

Dennis Felton Leads Georgia to Two Wins in One Day, Drawing Praise From Bob Knight

The tornado that damaged the Georgia Dome led to an unusual rescheduling of the SEC Tournament and forced Georgia to play two games in one day. And when Georgia won both games, coach Dennis Felton was praised by someone who knows a little bit about coaching basketball, ESPN analyst Bob Knight:

"I think this is a real credit for the coaching staff, not for what they did today necessarily, but the kind of practices they had throughout the whole course of the year," Knight said. "They had to have been tough, good practices that have enabled these kids to look at two games and say, 'Hey, we practiced hard, we practiced long, we scrimmaged, we can do this. This is what we've prepared for.' I think their coaches did a great job a long time before today in getting them ready for something like this. You never expect this, and yet what they did certainly prepared them to be able to play."

Although I didn't like the way Felton complained about the rescheduling of the SEC Tournament, I have to agree with Knight here: Felton had his team ready to play in incredibly difficult circumstances, and whether the Bulldogs win or lose today, Felton should be commended for his coaching.
