Derek Bell Is in Drug Trouble Again

Once upon a time, Derek Bell was known as a decent baseball player who had an awesome mustache. Hitting in the pitcher-friendly Astrodome in the late 1990s, he usually hung around 20 home runs a year and even occasionally drove in 100 runs in a season. On his career, his OPS+ is 99, which means he was almost exactly average over his 11 seasons.

In 2001, he did something stupid. He signed with the Pittsburgh Pirates. After a terrible 2001 season, the Pirates informed him in the spring of 2002 that he'd have to win his starting job back. Bell responded by telling the team that if forced to compete for his job, he'd go in to "Operation Shutdown." If they were unsure what that was, they soon found out. Bell got on his houseboat and sailed away from the Pirates' camp in Bradenton, officially ending his Major League career, while pocketing the $4.5 million the Pirates owed him.

For the next few years, Bell was remembered only for "Operation Shutdown." Then, in 2006, he was arrested on cocaine charges. Bloggers made "Operation Crackdown" jokes, a sadly funny mugshot circulated on the internet, and Bell was mostly forgotten about. Now, Bell has been arrested on drug charges again. There was a point when it was easy to point Bell out as the best example of poor management and athlete greed in the late '90s and early '00s. Now, even as a Pirate fan I can't think of his story as anything but sad.

Operation Shutdown Is Over! Derek Bell Returns!

What would you say if I told you that Oil Can Boyd had a barnstorming team that travelled around playing minor-league teams? Or that former Expo stalwarts Delino Deshields and Marquis Grissom (I know their best days came elsewhere, I just like remembering that the Expos existed every once in a while) were playing on said team? If you're anything like me, you probably think that it's the coolest thing ever. But then, what if I told you that the one and only Derek Bell, he of Operation Shutdown fame, he of the crack cocaine arrest last year, was also playing for the team? You would think I was a liar. You would be wrong. Check this out:

The New Haven County Cutters will face Oil Can Boyd's Traveling All-Stars, a modern-day barnstorming team featuring the former Boston Red Sox pitcher, in a preseason exhibition doubleheader at Historic Yale Field on Friday, May 18, starting at 5:30 p.m.

Boyd, along with 19 former major league and minor league players, including Marquis Grissom, Delino Deshields and Derek Bell, are expected to play in the games against the Cutters.

According to his Wikipedia page, Derek Bell offered his famous "Operation Shutdown" ultimatum to the Pittsburgh Pirates on March 18th, 2002 after the Pirates informed him that his .173 average in 2001 coupled with his poor play that spring was likely to cost him his job. Bell left the team on March 29th and sailed away on his houseboat. If May 18th is the first game for Oil Can's All-Stars (believe it or not, it's hard to gather information on them), that will mean Operation Shutdown lasted five years, one month, and 19 days. Honestly? I can't believe someone wanted him this soon.

Oil Can Boyd, Delino Deshields, Marquis Grissom, and Derek Bell, all on one team. Anyone up for a road trip to Historic Yale Field?
