Range Balls: Trump's Stolen Golf Cart

In an effort to keep our golf visitors well informed on what is going on around the Internet, Range Balls is our weekly link dump. Every Tuesday during golf season, we will toss out some of the most interesting things we came across. If you have a tip, e-mail us at fanhousegolf@gmail.com. Enjoy the links.

-- Donald Trump has just a few dreams left that he has yet to fulfill, one of them involves hosting a U.S. Open at one of his golf courses. The first step occurred this week, when Trump National Golf Club-Bedminster hosted the U.S. Junior Amateur, and all was right in the world before someone stole the Donald's golf cart. No word yet if the heister was an old "Apprentice" firee. [Star-Ledger]

Donald Trump: 'MMA Is the Place to Be'

When Donald Trump first announced that he was getting involved with Affliction's new MMA promotion last June, a lot of hardcore MMA fans reacted negatively. Trump would bastardize the newborn organization, they said. But one can't deny that "The Donald" has helped bring some much-needed media attention to the fledgling promotion.

Case in point: last week's "Affliction: Trilogy" press conference in New York City, which was held in the atrium of the Trump Tower in midtown Manhattan, brought out the likes of CNBC, the New York Post and the nationally-syndicated show, Extra.

FanHouse briefly caught up with Trump to talk about his involvement in MMA and who he thinks will win the Fedor Emelianenko vs. Josh Barnett fight on August 1. The full video interview is below.

John Salley Talks Reality TV, NBA Going Soft and Marriage Contracts

Since retiring from the NBA in 2000, John Salley has seemingly reinvented himself. From appearing in major motion pictures to co-hosting talk shows, "Spider" Salley is one of a few former athletes who has been able to make a living in Hollywood once his playing days were over.

Next week, Salley will star in NBC's 'I'm a Celebrity ... Get Me Out of Here!'. The reality show, which features 10 celebrities living in a Costa Rican jungle, premieres on Monday, June 1. Viewers will be able to vote for their favorite celebrity, a list which include former WWE diva Torrie Wilson and actor Stephen Baldwin, until only one remains at the end of the month.

FanHouse spoke to Salley about preparing for life in the jungle and the lack of toughness being allowed in this year's NBA playoffs. The full interview is below.

Great News, Scotland: Donald Trump Is Coming to Build Large Monuments to Himself

It was roughly a year ago that the fine citizens of Scotland, upon learning that Donald Trump wanted to build a gauche golfing megaplex on their coastline, kindly told him to go [jump off a bridge]. Twice.

Undeterred, Trump called on the wise words of philosopher/maniac Woody Hayes: "Paralyze resistance with persistence." And then proceeded to buy what he wanted.

Donald Trump, Fedor Emelianenko, Affliction Team Up for 'Fighting Fedor' Reality Show

Donald Trump will announce a new reality show Thursday, and instead of saying "You're fired" to the losers, he'll say "You're fighting Fedor" to the winner.

Trump is one of the front men for the new show Fighting Fedor, a reality show that has been in the discussion phase for about year but is now, supposedly, finally coming to fruition. The show will feature a group of heavyweight mixed martial arts fighters who will compete for the right to fight the best heavyweight in the world, Fedor Emelianenko.

Jets Play (Donald) Trump Card In Effort to Sell Out the Pricy Seats

The New York Jets and Giants have drawn a lot of coverage for their efforts to sell personal seat licenses to their new stadium. The Jets, as part of their plan, are holding an auction to maximize return on the fees generated by the 2,000 seats in their Coaches Club. Those seats, among other perks, allow the owners to stand just behind the Jets bench during games. To ensure the bidding reaches stratospheric levels, they've enlisted the help of a New York icon.

I didn't say it was a football icon. Hard to see how the patron saint of conspicuous consumption will portray this as anything other than a crude cash grab by the Jets. It will be interesting to see how such a strategy plays out in the current financial atmosphere, regardless of the Donald's come-on.

Natalie Gulbis Will Be On 'The Apprentice,' Forcing Me to Google 'The Apprentice'

There are exactly five television shows I watch religiously, and most have to deal with sports. I still tune in to "PTI," always catch "The Daily Show" and the "The Colbert Report" and, just like most males on this planet, blankly stare at "Sportscenter" in the morning as I pound through a bowl of Special K Fruity Pebbles. I'm also still one of those people that DVRs "Entourage", even though I don't think it's been good since before E bought his first suit.

But now that the beautiful, oh so beautiful, Natalie Gulbis will be appearing on the NBC show "The Apprentice," I'll add one more show to my tight schedule.
Donald Trump let the cat out of the bag this week: golfer Natalie Gulbis of Lake Las Vegas is heading for his NBC show "The Apprentice." Trump made the comment at the U.S. Open recently. Gulbis, who had her best season in 2007 with five Top 10 finishes, said in an e-mail Friday that all questions on the subject have to go through NBC.

Dana White on Alphabet Soup: 'The U.F.C. Will Not Fall Into the Boxing Trap'

On Saturday, fans of MMA will have a rare opportunity: They can watch the best fighter in the world on television without having to buy his bout on pay-per-view.

That fighter, the Ultimate Fighting Championship star Anderson Silva, will have a match on basic cable because the established UFC wants to deliver a knockout blow to the upstart Affliction MMA organization, which will show its first pay-per-view program that night.

At first glance, this looks like welcome news for consumers: Fans are accustomed to paying $50 to watch high-caliber fighters like Silva, and competition has led UFC to cut its prices. But none other than Donald Trump, who is promoting Affliction, says the head-to-head match-up between UFC and Affliction may portend something few fans want to see: a time when the sport's best athletes fight for separate organizations.

Donald Trump: I Like Tito Ortiz, He Likes Me and He'd Love to Be With Affliction

When Donald Trump signed on to be a business partner in the Affliction mixed martial arts promotion, it wasn't his money he was bringing to the promotion so much as his name. Trump is well known and well connected, and having him on board helps Affliction make deals.

In a call today to promote the upcoming Affliction: Banned show, Trump told me he hopes to make a big deal with one of the biggest free agents in MMA, Tito Ortiz:

"I think Tito's terrific," Trump said. "He was on The Apprentice. ... He was not only a nice guy -- and that's very different than he is in the ring -- he was really very talented and very smart. I think he likes me a lot and I like him a lot. That doesn't mean he's signed a contract, but I think Tito would love to be with us."

Ortiz, whose contract with UFC expired after his loss to Lyoto Machida at UFC 84, is expected to sign with some promotion in time to fight by the end of 2008. EliteXC boss Gary Shaw told me last month that he'd like to sign Ortiz, so it's clear that even though Dana White is out of the Tito business, Tito is going to have options.

Report: Wanderlei Silva Turns Down July 19 Spike Show; Will UFC Still Take on Affliction?

This morning I noted the report that UFC wants to put a live fight between Wanderlei Silva and Brandon Vera on Spike on July 19 in an effort to undermine Affliction's pay-per-view debut.

But Dave Meltzer of Yahoo reports that Silva's camp has turned it down, saying the Axe Murderer, who last fought at UFC 84 in May, can't be ready to fight in a month. So it appears that Silva won't be on a Spike card -- unless UFC President Dana White can find a way to persuade him.

But that doesn't mean the Spike card won't happen, as Meltzer reports that other fighters are being approached about the possibility of doing the show. It's not clear how likely it is for a live UFC show on Spike is, but it certainly hasn't been ruled out.

If it does happen, the Affliction show will be a bust. I don't know if I'm quite as pessimistic about Affliction as Michael Rome of Bloody Elbow, who says Affliction is likely looking at less than 40,000 pay-per-view buys, but I do think that the folks at Affliction had better be prepared to lose a lot of money on their first show.

If getting good talent, headlined by Fedor Emelianenko, is seen as the first step in a long-term effort to create a strong MMA organization, fine. But if Affliction thinks it's going to turn a profit on its July show, Donald Trump is in for a very unpleasant surprise.
