This Week in 'The Christies Seek Attention'

I don't mean to sound offended or holy -- I write about Salim Stoudamire, for goodness sake -- but do Doug Christie and his wife Jackie really need attention so much they'll turn the nation's economic crisis into an opportunity for publicity? Yes, yes they do. The Christies' overworked flack got the pair into the Wall Street Journal on the basis of some bizarre scheme to bail out the banks by propping them up with stock buys 95% of America can't afford.
Former NBA guard Doug Christie and his wife have called for as much to help out in this time of financial distress. The couple put out a press release late Tuesday to announce that they will purchase 3,000 shares of corporate stock to help with what they termed "the AIG financial crisis." In addition to their cash, the release said, "the Christie ... have graciously used their star appeal to bring awareness to the issue."

The Christies kept their word, and then some. A representative for the couple said that on Wednesday the Christies bought 3,000 shares of American International Group, 1,000 shares of computer maker Apple and 1,000 shares of online retailer Amazon.com.
How gracious of the Christies to lend their indisputable star power to a global crisis which has been on the front page of every relevant newspaper for a solid week! Again, I don't mean to look a gift horse in the mouth -- the Christies could be off burning Benjamins and catapulting kittens into a brick wall; this Wall Street activity is a net plus for Earth if you consider that possibility. But c'mon, WSJ. Focus on the big picture, not a retired NBA player begging for cameras and ink. Antawn Jamison spent some money to help real American kids. The Rockets organization is leading the way on Ike recovery. Those things aren't ploys for attention, and they actually matter.

Doug Christie Believes Games Were Fixed, Also Believes He Was 'Blackballed'

We've had plenty of reason to have some fun with Doug Christie over the years, and why not? The fact that he and his wife have no ordinary love is pretty hilarious, as is the way Doug used to gesture at her roughly 212 times per game during his playing days. Now that there have been some discussions about Christie's 2002 Kings team in relation to the whole Tim Donaghy thing, Doug wastes no time in attempting to get back in the spotlight.

Christie first comments (on his blog of course) about the injustices of that 2002 playoff series, but quickly rolls that into how he believes not winning a championship -- along with his close marital relationship -- have caused him to be "blackballed" from the league.

What really makes me mad in the turn of events since then is the fact that these events have turned into what I consider a black balling of myself in the NBA!! ...

A champion is treated in a whole different light. They are valued in the locker room and commercially on a whole different level. For years, my wife and I have been ridiculed and talked about like we are weird, all because we did not fit the "mold" of what the culture breeds in the NBA. It got to the point that these stories would precede us to the point that teams thought that I (i.e. we) would be a problem. That is bogus!!!!

It's a long, rambling post, which is more about Christie's personal struggles to get back into the league than it is about the conspiracy with the fixing of games. But since he does mention his disappointment with the situation, it's worth noting that he doesn't come out and say it wasn't true like say, the owners of the Kings did. It's just bad for the league to have former players giving any credence at all to a convicted criminal's statements, when there is zero evidence right now to back those desperate words up.

The Christies Fire Back

Talk about calm before the storm. There's really nothing doing today, so if you're starved for NBA content you might as well read Doug Christie vs. his comments section. That the Christies are all over the internet really means nothing to me; after all, he's unemployed, and would never have been known were it not for the gimmick of his creepy relationship. But I find it kind of hilarious that a former NBA player is fighting with his comments secton. Even I don't bother with that much, and I can't even pay for my juice boxes. An excerpt:
Mihajlo: I love the hypocracy in your interview about women in the NBA workplace. The exact type of behavior by young ladies that you are trying to prevent is the behavior of your wife in this picture.

DC: The last time I checked, my wife was a model. There is a difference I think when you're taking a photograph. Also, if you run back and go look at our comments, then you may catch a clue on what I said. I said I only worry about what Jackie wears. What women choose to wear is their decision. By the way, you really shouldn't try to make this out to be a topic on women's clothing. They are free to wear whatever they want, as I said. This is about everyone, I repeat EVERYONE, being treated respectful in the workplace. Thank you.
As far as I can tell, Christie spends most of the time trying to convince readers that his marriage is pure and normal. Oh yeah, and every outrageous rumors they've heard is false. I wonder, though, if he realizes he's shooting himself in the foot. If there's one thing I've learned, it's that controversy drives traffic. Doug Christie needs to be telling us how weird things are with Jackie, not boring us to death with disclaimers and deflections. Otherwise, pretty soon people will have no reason to visit his blog--even if he can make it back into the league.

Doug Christie and the Trail Blazers Work Out

Doug ChristieI had a little trouble with the title. Did Doug Christie work for the Trail Blazers, or did he just work with the Trail Blazers? Because there are conflicting reports. From Christie's new blog on MVN:
Coming off my first workout for an NBA team, I am very happy and looking forward to the others I have planned. It felt great to be back on the court with the players and play basketball. When my agent called to tell me they wanted to see me workout, it was great news.
Mike Barrett, the team's play-by-play announcer, had a slightly different version on his blog:
Making a guest appearence at the practice facility today was Doug Christie, who's hoping to get back into the league. The Seattle native was just looking for a place to get a good NBA run in prior to training camp, and decided to come to Portland. He also knows some of the Blazer coaches well, and it never hurts to show someone what you still have left in the tank. The Blazers have 15 on the roster, and therefore don't have any room to sign someone like Christie to a contract. But, you never say never, so I'm not saying it.
So, are the Blazers seriously scouting Christie or simply doing him a favor? After reading both explanations ... I have no idea. I can understand Christie's motivation to make it sound like he's in demand, but it's also possible that Barrett's the one not getting the whole story. Either way, I can't imagine the Blazers will actually offer a contract. Not only is the team already over the roster limit, but they're (relatively) stacked with a crowded backcourt plus a bevy of young swingman in the form of James Jones, Travis Outlaw and Martell Webster that all need a chance to play in order for the Blazers to see what they have for the future.

Also, and this is unrelated but I couldn't figure out how to shoehorn it anywhere else, Jackie Christie, Doug's wife, has a blog. Just thought you should know.

You Can Not Kill Doug Christie, You Can Only Hope He'll Retire Someday

You Cannot Kill Doug Christie, You Can Only Hope He'll Retire Someday

Like a refreshing drink of cyanide amid summer's heat, Doug Christie pokes his head out of the dungeon homestead. You'll be shocked to know he wants to play again.

Steve Weinman from Taking It To The Rack does the honors this year.
"I think if you look at those records you see that a healthy Doug Christie is definitely a competitive one and one that is [going to] bring a lot to the table," Christie states with confidence. "I can play 20-30 minutes per night. I say that because if you're able to play more than one position, now you're able to get minutes at various positions. I think my shooting has improved tremendously. My ball-handling and passing ability [as well]. Always working on foot-speed and strength."
DC13 last mattered (in terms of basketball) in 2003-04. He had foot problems to start 2004, Geoff Petrie pickpocketed Otis Smith, Christie decided Orlando wasn't the best town in which to toil, Dallas gave him an improbable shot which flamed out spectacularly, the Clippers gave him an improbable shot which flamed out spectacularly, and now Boston looks poised to give him an improbable shot which -- knowing the Christies -- will probably flame out spectacularly.

Stop it, people. I appreciate what DC has given us -- not the least which is this; add in that he was one of the leaders of the great Kings teams -- but being the first runner-up in the 'Reggie Miller at Age 42' sweepstakes should not indicate anything positive. Doug needs someone to tell him the truth. Unfortunately for the Celtics and for Doug, that probably won't be Danny Ainge.

Corey Brewer: Future NBA All-Defensive Team Member

Anybody that has watched him play knows exactly what I am talking about. Other than finding a big man that is not a stiff, the most difficult thing for NBA GMs to find is a wing player that is ready to come in the NBA and become a top defender. Offense and flash might get all of the glory, but an athletic defensive minded player like Brewer can't take a good team and make it a great one. Think about the impact that great wing defenders such as Bruce Bowen, Tayshaun Prince, Eddie Jones, Doug Christie, and Scottie Pippen have made over the years. When those guys were playing all-league type defense, their teams were usually winning. As with Scottie Pippen, the thing that makes Brewer great on defense is freakish wingspan. When an athletic 6'8" swing man has the wingspan of a seven-footer, and the willingness to focus on defense, that usually spells trouble for NBA offenses.

Most draft boards currently have him listed as a late lottery pick. Anyone that is in need of an all-league perimeter defender shouldn't make the mistake of passing on Brewer.

Breaking News: Clippers Sign Jackie (and Doug) Christie

Last time we heard from the Christies, Jackie was crackin' the whip, letting us and Doug know that he was making a comeback, with hopes of returning to the Raptors. Well, apparently she wasn't picky.

From Sportsnet.ca:
According to a player agent, Doug Christie has signed a 10-day contract with the Los Angeles Clippers.
So while Doug won't be playing for Toronto any time soon; he will be playing in Toronto when the Clips meet the Raps at the Air Canada Centre this Sunday. Unfortunately:
Raptors fans had been looking forward to the possibility of seeing Alvin Williams in a Clippers uniform, after the team had signed the former Raptors guard to a 10-day deal. However, it wasn't to be for Williams as that contract has expired and Los Angeles elected not to re-sign him to a second one.

Instead, the Clippers enlisted the services of Christie, who remains the Raptors' franchise leader in steals with 664.
Oh, I can't wait to welcome back the NBA's most committed power couple! I'll have to look under the bed, but I may have even kept my "Doug Christie: 1, A.C. Green: 0" sign from last time.

Bonus: A very special Christies' song after the jump.
