On Wednesday, Miami Dolphins linebacker Matt Roth returned to practice for the first time since failing a conditioning test on the first day of training camp -- thus ending a strange roller-coaster ride of mysterious illnesses and phantom injuries that lasted almost three months. At least we thought the ride was over.

Roth apparently suffered an ankle injury in his first practice back and will miss Miami's game against New Orleans this Sunday.

Back in August, Roth failed his conditioning test. He failed even though he had signed a statement that every player signs, saying that he was not injured in any way, shape or form.

The Florida Panthers are no strangers to unique marketing campaigns in an effort to put butts in the seats. Earlier this season, with the team fighting for its first playoff berth since 1999-00, the team introduced The Panthers Promise Plan, offering free tickets during the 2009-10 season if they failed to make the playoffs, which they eventually did. According to the team, all free tickets that were promised will be honored next season.

Now, it appears as if the Panthers are bringing NFL super-agent Drew Rosenhaus into the marketing mix.

There's a lot of information about Plaxico Burress rumbling around Twitter this evening. As is so often the case in Twitterville, there are some shades of gray regarding how much of it is true and/or meaningful.

What is true is that commissioner Roger Goodell has initiated a review of Burress' self-shooting incident under the NFL's personal conduct policy. This information came courtesy of the Twitter account of Brian McCarthy (NFLprguy) at the league office, and it came about 35 minutes or so after Burress' agent, Drew Rosenhaus (RosenhausSports), tweeted that "There are now 5 teams interested in Plaxico. I expect more teams to enter the mix over the next few weeks as well."

The question is to what extent the Goodell news impacts the Rosenhaus spin.

Houston, we have a Sex Cannon!

It looks like free-agent quarterback Rex Grossman finally found a home for the 2009 season on Thursday. The Houston Chronicle and Drew Rosenhaus' Twitter page are reporting that the former Bears signal-caller will sign a one-year, $620,000 contract pending a physical on Friday. The team hasn't made any comment, citing a policy of not commenting until a deal has been officially signed.

If Grossman indeed joins the Texans, it would be a surprising change of direction for Houston.

The Washington Redskins have re-structured the contract of wide receiver Santana Moss, giving him a new guaranteed payment of $6.28 million in the process. As you might expect, Moss's agent, Drew Rosenhaus, is pleased.

And as everyone who's following Rosenhaus on Twitter (like me) would expect, Rosenhaus has taken to expressing his pleasure in 140-character increments.

On Tuesday, former Vikings quarterback and Hall of Famer Fran Tarkenton went on the radio to share his thoughts on Brett Favre's inability to retire (among other things). Short version: if Brett ends up in Minnesota, Fran hopes he fails.

Today, Tarkenton was back on the airwaves to talk more Favre and, well, just about everything else. Like ESPN's Marcellus Wiley, who called Fran a "grumpy old man" yesterday. Via Sportsradiointerviews.com:

The difficult contract negotiations between disgruntled receiver Anquan Boldin and the Arizona Cardinals took an interesting turn Tuesday with the news that Boldin has filed paperwork with the players' union to fire agent Drew Rosenhaus and seek new representation.

It's unclear who Boldin's new agent would be as he seeks a restructured contract or a trade from Arizona. The rules require him to wait at least five days after firing his agent to secure a new one. It's also unclear what this means in terms of where Boldin will play in 2009. Heck, it's not even really clear that he's through with Rosenhaus for good. At least not if you believe Rosenhaus's prolific and popular Twitter page.

As we all know from Drew Rosenhaus' Twitter feed, grumpy Jets running back Thomas Jones plans to report to the team's voluntary workouts this week after skipping them all so far this off-season because he doesn't like his contract anymore. But according to Rich Cimini in the New York Daily News, Jones' change of heart doesn't mean the Jets have had one on their end.

The Jets have been playing hardball with Jones, going so far as to draft Iowa RB Shonn Greene in the third round of last month's draft as a way of telling Jones he could be replaced. When Rosenhaus met with Jets GM Mike Tannenbaum earlier this week at the NFL owners' meetings in Fort Lauderdale, it doesn't appear as if he got any satisfaction, according to Cimini:

The Twitter-happy NFL superagent, who stopped by the owners meetings at the Ritz-Carlton here Tuesday to meet with some teams about some clients, doesn't give the impression of a man who believes those meetings went especially well.

Usually, Rosenhaus uses his Twitter account as a way of putting out 140-character fluff press releases about his clients: "______ is in great shape and is going to have a huge year for the ______s in 2009." Something like that. But this morning, he fired off a series of tweets venting about NFL owners who don't spend all the way up to the salary cap and the double-standard that allows teams to cut players but doesn't let players renegotiate deals in progress.
