Latest DustinJohnson Stories

The Real Winner? Augusta

Every Monday during the PGA Tour season, Monday Pin Placement will run as a wrap-up of the weekend's action. Basically, we'll focus on what you missed while you were out grinding on the putting green.

In 1996, Greg Norman had one of the most epic collapses in the history of golf. Carrying a six-shot lead into the final round of that year's Masters, Norman was set to finally grab that green jacket that had eluded him for so long.

You all know the story. Norman wound up losing the tournament to Nick Faldo and in accordance with the old saying "a picture is worth a thousand words," has this lasting image that summed up his experience at Augusta. After a final round 78, Norman had two choices: he could duck out of Augusta or he could face the music. Norman responded courageously by heading into the press room and answering all questions asked of him for 45 minutes. He earned the respect of darn near any golfer that has played the game.

Dustin Johnson Arrested for DUI

This is a story you don't find a lot on the golf page of FanHouse. Dustin Johnson, the 24-year-old sophomore on the PGA Tour who won at Pebble Beach earlier this year, was arrested for driving under the influence and booked on Monday at the J. Reuben Long Detention Center in Myrtle Beach.

There has yet to be a report on what his blood alcohol level was for the resident of Myrtle Beach who attended Coastal Carolina, but as a younger gentleman that has spent a little time in that town, it sure wouldn't be hard to get pulled over if you were drinking and driving. Bars and gentleman clubs are nearly as plentiful as the golf courses and none are really close together.

Monday Pin Placement: They're Back

Every Monday
during the PGA Tour season, Monday Pin Placement will run as a wrap-up of the weekend's action. Basically, we'll focus on what you may have missed while you were out grinding on the putting green.

Mickelson Wins, Tiger's Back In -- To all but the most die-hard of golf fans who are above hero worship and basic story-lines, there are two golfers that are sure to grab your attention every time they set foot on the course: Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson (seen here in June of 2008).

Phil Mickelson Shoots 63 at Northern Trust Open

So far, 2009 has not been Phil Mickelson's year. Lefty has played in three tournaments, missing the cut in one and making just over $30,000 combined in the other two, putting him a measly 136th on the FedEx Cup points list.

What is the best way to break out of a nasty slump? Play, and play well, at a tournament you won the year before.

Monday Pin Placement: It Ain't Easy Being Wie

Every Monday
during the PGA Tour season (unless one of the tournaments you're writing about is postponed due to rain and concludes on a weekday), Monday Pin Placement will run as a wrap-up of the weekend's action, with a little commentary mixed in. We'll focus on what you may have missed while you were out grinding on the putting green.

Dustin Johnson 'Wins' AT&T Pro-Am After Final Round Rainout

The PGA suffered a similarly embarrassing fate to NASCAR today, when the final round of the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am was canceled to due to inclement weather conditions.

As a result, Dustin Johnson, the leader through 54 holes, was handed a big, shiny trophy, a hefty paycheck, and a free ticket to the 2009 Masters. The tournament's final round was originally postponed to Monday, but the rain picked up again this morning and forced Tour officials to cancel the final round.

Amateurs 'Excused' at Pebble Beach Pro-Am; Final Round Delayed for Pros

The final round of the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am was set to begin at 7:35 AM PT, but due to inclement weather, the pros are still in the clubhouse and the ams have been, in the words of CBS golf analyst Jim Nantz, "excused." Which is a nice way of saying, "Yeah, sorry about that, but this year's event is just a three-round affair for the hackers."

UPDATE:
the fourth round is now postponed until Monday. Hopefully.

To Watch: 614-Yard 13th Hole at Torrey Pines -- Can Anybody Get There in Two?

The 2008 U.S. Open starts tomorrow at Torrey Pines and will measure 7,643, the longest in the history of the championship by a short par 4 (379 yards). I suspect next year's venue, Bethpage Black, will break the current record, and before the end of the decade, Jim Furyk will be talking about how 8,000-yard layouts aren't all that long.

The longest hole the U.S. Open's longest course is the par-5 614-yard 13th. There won't be a lot of players going for the green in two this week, partly because of the typical USGA setup (narrow fairways, punishing rough, slick greens), and partly because IT'S 614 YARDS.

Despite the third of a mile between tee box and flag stick, there are a handful of guys who can get there, and one of them did it in the practice round.

FanHouse U.S. Open Media Guide, Page 8

Not to quote the Weepies, but the world spins madly on with the FanHouse Media Guide.

  • Fredrik Jacobson -- t-5 -- Jacobson is the typical European golfer that you see randomly in a major playing well, take the needed time to remember his name and then you don't hear of him again for five years. I hate that.
  • Lee Janzen -- WON -- Ok, trivia time. Did you know there are nine golfers that have won a major championship with a "Z" in their name? Janzen is one, can you name the other eight?
  • Miguel Angel Jimenez -- t-2 -- Not a doubt in my mind that Jimenez is my favorite Spaniard golfer in his 40s with a dyed ponytail that looks like an extra from every movie with pot and people laughing.
  • Brandt Jobe -- t-33 -- Jobe has played on Tour so long, he was around back when the Nissan Open was still called the Los Angeles Open. Never a winner on the big boys tour, Jobe has notched ten wins around the world.
  • Dustin Johnson -- DNP -- This is his first year as a full time PGA Tour pro and he's doing well, notching two top-10s thus far. Never a problem when playing a lengthy course, Johnson is third on tour in driving distance (307.1).
  • Zach Johnson -- t-45 -- Who knew Drake University was the new Oklahoma State? Johnson (pictured) went from obscure golfer to occasional favorite after his Masters win last year. He will struggle with the distance of Torrey Pines but if his wedge play is on, it won't matter. Also, if it looks like he's going to win, you can skip church on Sunday because he tends to give a sermon during his victory speech.
  • Robert Karlsson -- t-45 -- Not a lot of experience at the U.S. Open, but a top-10 at this year's Masters should have him ready for similar conditions.
  • Martin Kaymer -- DNP -- The 23-year-old German is being touted as the "Next Big Stud Who Will Probably Dominate the Americans in the Ryder Cup," winning his first European Tour event earlier this season. Kaymer shot a 59 in the second round of the Habsberg Classic in 2006, following that up with a 62 the next day. Also, he won that tournament (shock ensued).
  • Shingo Katayama -- t-35 -- Most famous for always rocking the Nike cowboy hat, Katayama has won 24 times on the Japan Golf Tour. Also, on the Japan Golf Tour website, they give six profile categories -- full name, birth date, birth place, height, weight and blood type?! Huh?
  • Jerry Kelly -- t-7 -- A grinder on tour, Kelly has only two top-10s in majors, both coming in 2007. Also, Kelly helps his brother-in-law, Jim Schuman, coach the University of Wisconsin golf team.
