Josh Freeman: Not a 2009 Fantasy QB

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers think they finally have a franchise quarterback, in Kansas State's Josh Freeman. They very well might, but that doesn't make him a good fantasy football option for this coming season. In fact, I don't think he should be drafted in any league as of right now.

The Bucs currently have Byron Leftwich, who will probably be starting this season, while the rookie is brought along, a la Carson Palmer waiting behind Jon Kitna in Cincinnati. It's possible for the Bucs to cut Leftwich -- since they didn't give him a signing bonus it wouldn't cost them any money -- but most in the know believe Freeman's not ready to immediately come in and start.

Derrick Ward Inks With Tampa Bay

Derrick Ward has left the band. The only current free agent member of "Earth, Wind, and Fire," the Giants' trio of running backs, signed with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers last night, inking a deal that is reported to be worth four years and $17 million ($6 million guaranteed).

Ward joins a running back corps that now includes Earnest Graham and a broken down Cadillac Williams, the latter of whom dealt with two serious injuries in 2008. The signing by the Bucs is another interesting move in what has been an already "bizarre" offseason in Tampa Bay.

For all those secretly coveting and projecting Derrick Ward as the 2009 version of Michael Turner (you know the capable back-up who signs with a new team to be the man) you just might wanna pay attention. Ward just signed with the Tampa Bay Bucs with aspirations of finally being the man.

If another season plagued by knee injuries wasn't the signal of the end for Carnell Williams, this should be. Ward had other suitors in the fold, but chose the re-vamped Tampa Bay offense that is beginning to take on a new shape in the early going of this new regime. You may recall Ward was quite the steady contributor the past few seasons in New York and he caught the eye of many in the fantasy football world after he blistered the Carolina Panthers for 215 yards on National TV. So who else is impacted?

Cards Expected to Release Edge, He Could End Up With Bucs

Cardinals running back Edgerrin James had a resurgence of sorts during the postseason. The same guy who managed just 514 yards during the regular season racked up nearly half that during the playoffs. Still, given his age and salary, there was a good chance his career with the Cards was over.

That helps explain why he didn't fly back to Arizona with his teammates after the Super Bowl (although having a home in Florida might've also had something to do with his travel plans). Whatever, the question now becomes: where does Edge end up in '09? Commence speculation:

Injuries Continue to Mount for Tampa Bay, Jermaine Phillips Done for Year

After dropping two consecutive NFC South games, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers are in need of some good news. Unfortunately, that's not going to happen at the moment, as head coach Jon Gruden announced on Monday that safety Jermaine Phillips will be lost for the season with a broken forearm.

Even worse, linebacker Derrick Brooks, who is the NFL's very own iron man, suffered a rib injury in the loss that is "very concerning" to Gruden. Not exactly what the doctor ordered for a team that's still desperately fighting for one of the final playoff spots in the NFC.

Two weeks ago Tampa Bay was sitting with a 9-3 record, on top of the NFC South. Now, the Buccaneers find themselves in a three-way battle with Dallas and Atlanta for the two NFC wild card spots, and they're losing players almost as fast as they're losing games.

With running back Earnest Graham already out of the lineup, the Buccaneers had to rely on backup quarterback Brian Griese in Sunday's loss to Atlanta thanks to a calf injury to starter Jeff Garcia. Now comes the news of Phillips and Brooks, and, well, that's not good news for Tampa Bay.

What is good news for Tampa Bay, however, is the fact it closes out the season with home games against San Diego and Oakland.

Cadillac Williams Officially Returns to Depleted Tampa Bay Backfield

For only the fifth time in Tampa Bay's past 28 games, Cadillac Williams will be in uniform and an active member of the Buccaneers offense, when they take on the winless Detroit Lions. Jon Gruden has been waiting for this moment for weeks, it seems, and it couldn't have come at a better time.

Earlier this week, Tampa Bay learned that its leading rusher, Earnest Graham, is going to miss the remainder of the season. Combine that with the release of Michael Bennett a few weeks ago -- when Williams was removed from the PUP list -- and the Buccaneers were down to only 33-year old Warrick Dunn, the recently signed Noah Herron, and fumble-prone Clifton Smith in their backfield.

Williams was listed as questionable this week with a hamstring injury.

It remains to be seen how effective he'll actually be, seeing as how he's hardly played the past two years, so it's nice that his first game back is against the worst rushing defense in the National Football League. So, at least he'll get to ease his way back into the grind.

The Atlanta Falcons

Roddy White - This season's superstar bust-out receiver missed Wednesday and Thursday practice with a back injury. The deep back bruise is not expected to cause White to miss time and he practiced on Friday, but keep him in the corner of your eye just in case.

The Baltimore Ravens

Derrick Mason - Despite a partially dislocated shoulder, Mason made good last week with seven catches for 82 yards. He should be good to go this week as well.

The Cleveland Browns

Kellen Winslow - Quickly becoming one of this year's leading fantasy frustrators, Kellen Winslow has not returned to practice despite an MRI indicating no structural damage in his shoulder. While normally the positive MRI would be a good sign, Coach Crennel says the only way he sees the field is if he shows full motion in the shoulder, which I assume means actually practicing. You might be wise to plan on another option should Junior disappoint yet again.

Brady Quinn - Quinn suffered a small fracture his right index finger last week against the Browns. While Quinn played with the injury and should play again this week, this is enough to bench him if you previously considered him for the starting spot this week.

Fantasy Football Fallout: Earnest Graham Out for the Season

Buccaneers running back Earnest Graham is probably out for the season. Considering our fantasy season has the playoffs from Weeks 14-16 or 15-16 in most sane leagues, he's irrelevant for fantasy football purposes the rest of the way.

Moving forward, what can we expect from ...

... Warrick Dunn?
He was already a waiver option, but now we know more about the Graham injury. In the near future, simply put: Tons. Dunn was held to only 53 yards on the ground yesterday, but it was against the very stout Vikings interior defense. He did have 24 touches, which is a precursor of the workload he can expect for at least the next few games. Even at 33 years old and less than 190 pounds, Dunn is still averaging 4.4 yards per carry this season.

Even better news for Dunn owners, the Bucs are playing the Lions this week. You know, the worst run defense in the NFL, a.k.a. the team who was dismantled by Jonathan Stewart and DeAngelo Williams yesterday to the tune of three touchdowns and 250 yards on 29 carries.

Um, yeah, get Dunn active in Week 12.

Earnest Graham Likely Done for Season

If Tampa Bay Buccaneers head coach Jon Gruden thinks the return of Cadillac Williams is like an early Christmas gift, I have to imagine the news of Earnest Graham's season-ending ankle injury ranks somewhere between root canal and watching somebody kick his dog.

According to Anwar S. Richardon of the Tampa Tribune, Gruden informed the media today that Graham is likely done for the season, after a Vikings defender landed on his ankle in the Buccaneers 19-13 win on Sunday. I suppose this means it's time to warm up the Cadillac.

The injury comes the same week Tampa Bay released Michael Bennett so it could active Williams from the PUP list.

It's a huge blow for the Buccaneers, as Graham was leading their ground attack with 563 yards rushing on 132 attempts, while scoring four touchdowns. He also caught 23 passes for 174 yards.

With Graham out, Tampa Bay's backfield will now be limited to 33-year old Warrick Dunn, and Williams, who as we've mentioned before, has been a sideline observer for 23 of the Buccaneers past 27 games.

The Baltimore Ravens

Derrick Mason - Despite a partially dislocated shoulder, Mason plans to make the trip to New York and participate in the game against the Giants. While he is not a great start, I do believe he will play. Keep in mind this will be his 100th straight game, so Mason has a vested interest in getting out there on Sunday.

The Carolina Panthers

Jonathan Stewart - Stewart seems to be recovering well from his painful heel injury, although with the Lions on tap and DeAngelo Williams playing so well, we might not see too much of Stewart until next week.
