NFL Mailbag: Free Agents, Hot Seats and Aaron Curry Man Love

Plaxico BurressSend your NFL questions (along with your name and location) to NFLFanHouse@gmail.com. Each Thursday, we'll answer the best -- or, if nothing else, most entertaining -- in our NFL Mailbag.

Excluding Brett Favre, which remaining free agent can play the biggest role in 2009?

The easy answer (INCLUDING Brett Favre!!) is Plaxico Burress. He's a high-ceiling, high-impact wide receiver. You saw the way the Giants' offense missed him at the end of 2008, and we've seen a handful of teams express interest in him -- even though nobody knows if he's going to play in 2009. If he is allowed to play, he's your answer. But it looks increasingly likely that he'll be suspended for at least part of the season, if not all. So in the non-Burress division, I have three veterans who could make an interesting impact in the right situation:

Cards Balance Offense, Deepen Defense

Who moved to the head of the NFL class during the draft? Find out with FanHouse's team-by-team 2009 Draft Grades.

Assuming the loss of last year's offensive coordinator Todd Haley -- and also assuming they keep Anquan Boldin around and happy -- doesn't prove catastrophic, the Arizona Cardinals have built one juggernaut of an offense. Along with Kurt Warner, two of the league's best wideouts, a quality slot receiver and Tim Hightower, the Cardinals have now added an NFL-ready every down back for good balance. Edgerrin James was on his last legs in 2008, and Hightower isn't suited to handle a full load. Enter: Chris "Beanie" Wells.

Edgerrin James Reportedly Released

According to John Clayton of ESPN.com, the Arizona Cardinals have released veteran running back Edgerrin James. The move comes as no real surprise, especially following the Cards using a first-round draft pick on Ohio State running back Beanie Wells. Wells joins Tim Hightower to give the Cardinals a solid, young duo of running backs that should provide the offense all the running game it needs.

James had wanted to be released, but the Cardinals didn't want to grant his wish until they knew they had a worthy replacement. In Wells, they have it, so the man we call Edge was granted his walking papers.

Beanie Wells Lands in a Superb Fantasy Situation With the Arizona Cardinals

The Arizona Cardinals, for years, have been "fantasy death." But recently, a resuscitation in the desert allowed the Cardinals to suddenly become valuable to fantasy owners. They drafted Beanie Wells of Ohio State in the first round on Saturday, and that's only more good news for fantasy owners.

See, Wells was supposed to land in a situation that would involve him sharing carries. Instead, word on the street is that Edgerrin James will be released and, if that happens, Wells will find himself in a fantastic situation.

NFL Draft Biggest Busts by Team: Who's Your Team's Worst Draft Pick Ever?

Everyone makes mistakes. But when those mistakes are magnified by intense scrutiny of the NFL draft, well, they become much more embarrassing than, say, my typical Friday morning, mustard-stain-on-khakis incident.

Which is why the NFL FanHouse braintrust got together to determine who is the biggest bust for each NFL team. They're not listed in terms of stupidity -- they're all stupid relative to a team's total draft performance. Meaning, of course, some teams "bust" is much different than another organization's; we did it this way to avoid just linking you to DetroitLions.com.

Instead, we're putting it in current draft order, sans trades, and allowing this list to serve as a reminder of each's team's ability to properly execute a fail. The "bust factor" was based primarily on three things: statistical production (or lack thereof), position in the draft and other available options during that year's draft.

Warner Re-Signs With Cards for 2 Years

After weeks of negotiations, which drew the ire of many, the Arizona Cardinals have agreed to terms with their franchise quarterback, Kurt Warner. Earlier Wednesday, in fact, mere minutes before the ESPN report, I took the Cardinals to task for messing around with Warner. He's obviously the most valuable player for the team that just went to the first Super Bowl in the its franchise history

Arizona Cardinals: Sky-High Expectations

Because the NFL season never ends, we present our 2009 Offseason Roadmaps for front offices to navigate through the summer.

After astonishing everyone and heading to the Super Bowl last season, the Arizona Cardinals now face truly raised expectations for the first time in memory. We all remember the magical postseason run, when Larry Fitzgerald established himself as the NFL's premier wideout (even if Andre Johnson wants to argue), Kurt Warner polished his legacy, and the defense showed its capability -- one we had not seen much in the regular season.

Fred Taylor to Visit Bills, Potential Marshawn Lynch Implications

The Jaguars released running back Fred Taylor last week, in part because, as a 11-year veteran, he's already playing on borrowed time, but also to free up salary-cap space to extend Maurice Jones-Drew's contract.

It was a mildly surprising move but from a business perspective, also completely understandable. Unlike most 33-year-old running backs, Taylor looks to have plenty left in the tank. Where Shaun Alexander and, to a lesser degree, Edgerrin James, have lost a step, Taylor stills seems perfectly capable of juking or steamrolling a defender as needed. Which explains why the Patriots and Bills are interested in his services.

Cards Apparently in No Hurry to Dump Edgerrin James

All that talk about the Cardinals dumping Edgerrin James might've been premature. At least if you're willing to put your faith in one anonymous source above another.

Last week, it seemed like Edge's Arizona career was over, and he'd probably end up playing in Florida somewhere. Today, Yahoo.com's Michael Silver writes that James isn't going anywhere, at least for now.

Surprising Cardinals Must Prioritize Offseason Needs

The Arizona Cardinals are coming off the most successful season in franchise history. This offseason, they'll face a myriad of personnel decisions which could go far in determining it we witnessed a beginning or an outlier. In addition to the high profile cases of Kurt Warner, Anquan Boldin, and Edgerrin James, the Cardinals also have several other key issues to resolve.

Karlos Dansby and Antonio Smith are free agents. The contracts Adrian Wilson and Darnell Dockett should be addressed, and they need to hire three significant coaching holes -- offensive coordinator, defensive coordinator, and quarterbacks coach.
