Arizona Scoreboard Operator, be Ready: Week Six Fantasy QB Rankings

FanHouse fantasy positional rankings are compiled weekly by the staff in order to provide answers to possible lineup questions. The Dallas Cowboys can throw the ball. The Arizona Cardinals can throw the ball. Both teams are average-ish at stopping the pass (Arizona 14th in pass defense, Dallas 18th). You could actually argue that the Cardinals have a good defense if you want to just throw out the abysmal effort against Bretty and the Jets. Regardless, I don't expect this game to be a blowout, nor do I expect many defensive stands either. Let's just start both Tony Romo and Kurt Warner, please. Ok?

- Yes, Eli's ahead of Peyton ... but I'm not jumping aboard that train for the rest of the season, as many are. It's just that Eli faces the Browns and Peyton is facing the best defense in football.

- Gotta love Jason Campbell against the Rams terrible pass defense, and I'm just crazy enough to think the Rams can find enough points to push the Redskins into throwing longer than expected.

- The Matt Hasselbeck turnaround starts this week.

1. Tony Romo, @ AZ
2. Kurt Warner, vs. DAL
3. Drew Brees, vs. OAK
4. Jay Cutler, vs. JAX
5. Eli Manning, @ CLE

Eli Manning Doesn't Need Plaxico Burress, Giants Blowing Out Seahawks

The New York Giants are playing without their top wide receiver today, thanks to the one-game suspension handed down to Plaxico Burress.

Quarterback Eli Manning would like everyone to know he's just fine without his favorite receiver.

Manning went into the locker room at halftime with video game numbers: 15-of-18 for 224 yards, with the Giants whipping the Seahawks 27-6. Manning has completed his passes to eight different receivers. Domenik Hixon is leading the way with four catches for 102 yards and a touchdown.

It would be nice to think that Burress is sitting at home watching this and thinking to himself, "Wow, my teammates are playing great without me. I guess that means I'm not above the team and need to stop ignoring team rules." I have my doubts about that, but I have no doubt that Manning has become one of the league's elite quarterbacks.

Sinorice Moss Is Quietly Becoming Irrelevant in New York

In recent years, the Giants have good success with finding competent pass catchers to surround Eli Manning. Off-field baggage aside, Jeremy Shockey was among the league's best tight ends, and Plaxico Burress quickly became a favorite target when he arrived in 2005. And there's Amani Toomer and most recently, 2007 second-rounderSteve Smith.

One player who has had yet to fulfill the promise the Giants envisioned when they drafted him in '06 is Sinorice Moss. The former University of Miami star has had an uneven NFL career, and his biggest professional accomplishment to date is that his brother happens to be Santana.

Despite his struggles, Moss is hopeful:
"I mean, honestly, I don't know what to think about [being the only active player not to play against the Rams]," Moss told the Daily News Friday. "I'm going to keep working and stay positive, like I've been since Day 1. And when that times come, just be a humble person and go out there and shine." ...

"I haven't spoken to anyone about being traded," Moss said. "That's not even on my mind. My mind is to do what I have to do for the team, and when I get my opportunities, make some plays. I would love to be here. This is where I want to be."

NFL FanHouse Roundtable: So Who Ya Got: Eli Manning, Philip Rivers or Jay Cutler?

(photos courtesy of Getty Images)

The NFL FanHouse brain trusts got together to identify which young quarterback they'd want if the choices included Eli Manning, Philip Rivers and Jay Cutler. Sure, there are some obvious oversights -- Ben Roethlisberger and Tony Romo immediately come to mind -- and Peter King will no doubt be miffed that Brett Favre and Tom Brady weren't included, but, hey, that's what our readers are for: to let us know (often loudly) when we're wrong.

Ryan Wilson: Jay Cutler is still maturing as an NFL quarterback and I think he has the most upside of the three. Yes, Eli Manning's won a Super Bowl and Philip Rivers proved his toughness during last year's postseason, but I think they're both pretty close to their ceilings as NFL players. That's not to say they're bad, just that Cutler could be much, much better. Particularly if Ed Hochuli referees every one of his games.

Michael David Smith: I think Cutler has the best arm of the three by a pretty wide margin. It's amazing how few people realized going into the draft that he was the best of the group of Cutler, Vince Young and Matt Leinart; Mike Mayock deserves a ton of credit for identifying Cutler's talent before just about anyone else.

Cutler has still only started 23 games in his career, so we still don't know a ton about him, but based on what we do know right now I think he's going to make about five Pro Bowls in the next 10 years.

Jay Cutler Has Arrived: Week Three Fantasy Quarterback Rankings

More Rankings: Running Backs | Wide Receivers | Tight Ends | DSTs | Kickers

- The Broncos have apparently shifted in philosophy. No longer is this a running team, with 75 passes to 58 runs after two weeks. Jay Cutler has already thrown for 650 yards and six TDs in only two weeks, and now he gets to face a Saints team that can put points on the board and allowed 321 yards to Jason Campbell. Expect 300 yards and three TDs.

- Take a look at some of the junk ahead of Carson Palmer. We all missed on him before the season started, I'll openly admit that. This fact doesn't mean you should cling to starting him. The Giants are going to manhandle him.

- A really good sleeper here is Trent Edwards. The Raiders' pass defense is susceptible, and they do well against the run. Look for Edwards to find some holes as he continues to gather confidence.

- Speaking of confidence, you shouldn't have any in Brett Favre. Sorry.

1. Jay Cutler, Broncos, vs. NO
2. Tony Romo, Cowboys, @ GB
3. Peyton Manning, Colts, vs. JAX
4. Donovan McNabb, Eagles, vs. PIT
5. Eli Manning, Giants, vs. CIN

Michael Strahan: 'Eli Manning Trips Over His Own Feet Just Walking All by Himself'

Former Giants defensive end Michael Strahan, now a Fox television analyst, says he'll have no problems criticizing his friends and former teammates.

"I criticize them to their face in the locker room: 'You sucked today,'" Strahan tells Frank Deford in a profile on tonight's Real Sports With Bryant Gumbel.

And then, as if to prove he won't hesitate to criticize former teammates, Strahan says the reason he's amazed by the famous Manning to Tyree play in the Super Bowl is that his old teammates Eli Manning and David Tyree seemingly lack the athletic talent necessary to pull the play off.

Giants Still Good ... Rams Not So Much

The defending champs looked a lot better than they did in week one. Of course, as the artist formerly known as Pac-Man would say, "they played the Rams, dude."

It looks like fantasy footballers are going to be licking their chops all season when they see "vs. STL" next to any of their players' names.

Seriously, what an absolutely disgraceful secondary. How can you blow coverage on Plaxico Burress? The Rams did on the first touchdown. Does Eli Manning really have business going 20-29 on the road? He's matured and grown into a very solid leader, sure, but he's not an elite passer. The Rams made him look like his brother ... on a good day.

I just don't think you can take anything positive away from these first two games in St. Louis, save for maybe the impending departure of Scott Linehan. Steven Jackson only got 13 carries, Marc Bulger didn't throw for 200 yards, the offensive line still is being manhandled, a defensive touchdown was allowed, and the DBs couldn't even cover a third-string running back.

It's gonna be a long year on the mighty Mississippi.

Some quick hit thoughts:

Let's See If ESPN's Prediction Of Brady As 'Most Indispensable Player' Holds True

In late July, ESPN threw up a list of the NFL's most indispensable players. At the tippy top of that list: Tom Brady.

The list was designed to say that if their team lost one player, who could it not be? The fact that Brady was No. 1 on the list means that New England would be more devestated without him than any other team would be without any one of their players.

At the time, I said phooey! That isn't to knock Brady's impact on the Pats, but I felt that a Colts team without Peyton Manning would be screwed. ESPN just threw a list up of big names.

Now we will see if they are right. Tom Brady is done for 2008 and ... if what they are implying is true ... the Patriots should be a 3-13 team this year. I mean, how could a team lost the NFL's "most indispensable player" and not crash and burn?

Exactly, the list is stupid.

Imagine the Colts without Manning? Hell, look at the Colts with a rusty Manning! That was pretty bad. Imagine if the Vikings didn't have Adrian Peterson right now (something I now feel stronger about). Look at how bad the Carolina Panthers were last year ... and look at the leadership of Jake Delhomme in Week 1 against the Chargers.

Plenty of Solid Options After Brady: Week Two Fantasy QB Rankings

FanHouse fantasy positional rankings are compiled weekly by the staff in order to provide answers to possible lineup questions. More Rankings: OVER/UNDER | Running Backs | Wide Recievers | Tight Ends | DSTs | Kickers

Losing Tom Brady hurt one owner -- at least directly -- in your league. The rest of the owners have at least one good option, because this position is chock full of point-scorers. I'd say down through 24 are decent options.

- Peyton Manning takes over the top spot this week. Many people are overreacting to last week. Well, he still managed to put up around 15 points -- depending upon your format -- and he didn't play well at all. As the season goes, he'll get back into the groove. Aaron Rodgers didn't have trouble against Minny, so why would Peyton?

- Rodgers and Eli Manning have incredibly easy matchups, don't miss out on the points.

- As you can see, I'm very worried about Carson Palmer and would sit him against the Titans stout defense.

- Matt Cassel is all the rage. I know who he's throwing to, but I'd like to see his first start since high school before anointing him the next big thing. Hey, that's just me.

1. Peyton Manning, Colts, @ MIN
2. Tony Romo, Cowboys, vs. PHI
3. Ben Roethlisberger, Steelers, @ CLE
4. Drew Brees, Saints, @ WAS
5. Donovan McNabb, Eagles, vs. DAL

Knee-Jerks: What We Saw From the Redskins and Giants, What It Means

Because we only have a one game sample thus far in the 2008 NFL season, and a near two-day break until there are more, we may as well analyze what we saw.

First and foremost, the Giants won that game on the sheer emotion they sported in the first quarter and a half. The last few years (think Colts over Saints and Steelers over Dolphins) the defending Super Bowl champ has been able to play their week one game in front of a rowdy home crowd, all the while being energized by the celebration of last season's Super Bowl victory. The same thing almost happened this year, as the Giants came out like gangbusters. The only difference is that the previous two kept pouring it on all game. This time, the Giants just ran out of gas by the middle of the second quarter.
