Michael Schumacher to Return to Formula One, Replace Felipe Massa

Michael SchumacherROME (AP) - Seven-time Formula One champion Michael Schumacher is making a comeback for Ferrari to replace injured driver Felipe Massa.

Ferrari said Wednesday in a statement that the German had agreed to get back in the cockpit until Massa is fit to return. The next race is the European Grand Prix on Aug. 21-23 in Valencia, Spain.

The Brazilian driver, who survived a freak accident in Saturday's qualifying for the Hungarian Grand Prix, sustained a concussion and damage to his skull. Doctors at the AEK Hospital in Budapest placed him in an artificial coma while they operated to repair the bone.

*Four-time Brickyard winner Jeff Gordon said Saturday he does not plan on getting any more invasive treatments for his nagging back pain.

Earlier this year an MRI revealed that Gordon suffers from mild arthritis. He underwent a procedure in May to inject anti-inflammatory medicine and Gordon said he's feeling better but credits that mostly to an improved training regiment, not the procedure.

He said some tracks irritate the injury more than others joking that he could take a month off, "then go to Bristol (Tenn.) and it will hurt.""The procedure really didn't have an impact so I made the decision after talking with my doctors not to do anything more,'' Gordon said. "And frankly, I don't like having needles in my back.''

Felipe Massa In Scary Wreck at Formula One Qualifying

Formula One driver Felipe Massa was airlifted to a hospital after a wreck in qualifying Saturday in Hungary.
Formula One is in Budapest this weekend for the Hungarian Grand Prix. Qualifying took place on Saturday, and it was marred by a wreck involving Felipe Massa.

The Ferrari driver missed a curb and slammed into the wall. Replays indicated that Massa was struck in the head by a spring that had fallen off a fellow competitor's car. Video after the jump.
