On Second Thought: Running Backs

Darren McFaddenOn Second Thought is Matt Snyder's look back at the initial FanHouse staff rankings, which were compiled nearly a month ago. As we all know, fantasy players' value changes frequently, even when no games are being played. Today, we look at running backs.

As teams continue to use two-backs systems, running back has become an increasingly deep and unpredictable position. Thus, you don't have the predictable first two rounds of years past. Injuries and the progress of young backs will shuffle backfields throughout the preseason. As that happens, the fantasy values of the running backs continually shift. Let's take a look.

Cowboys VP Calls Felix Jones Injury Most Devastating Loss to Team in '08

A year ago, the Cowboys used their two first-round picks on running back Felix Jones and cornerback Mike Jenkins. Neither contributed much as a rookie; Jenkins played in 14 games (starting three) and had 19 tackles, but the one he didn't make sticks out most in my mind (of course it does).

Jones, who was something of a surprise pick with Rashard Mendenhall still available, played in just six games before landing on injured reserve with a big toe and hamstring injury.

Felix Jones Shows Support for Tulsa; Eyes Big Second Season

Felix JonesThe Falcons' Matt Ryan was the Associated Press' NFL offensive rookie of the year last season. It was well deserved after completing 61.1 percent of his passes and throwing 16 touchdowns with a quarterback rating of 87.7.

But for the first three weeks of the season, Cowboys running back Felix Jones was the leader. In fact, he won all the primaries. Jones scored a touchdowns in the first three weeks of the season, including the first carry of his career at Cleveland. Jones scored on an 11-yard run, a 60-yard run, 33-yard scamper and how could we forget his 98-yard kickoff return for a score?

Fantasy Spin: T.O Unemployed

Big news out of Big "D" at this hour. It only seemed like a matter of time. He's notorious for burning bridges and ripping apart franchises, but it would appear Terrell Owens time has ended with the Dallas Cowboys. Initially the Cowboys were merely flirting with the topic of releasing Terrell Owens, but that's now a reality. Several sources have indeed indicated that Terrell Owens will in fact join the list of those recently out of work.

Where will he land? Does anybody really trust the guy anymore? So who else is impacted? One thing is certain the release of T.O is "huge" news in the fantasy world. He's betrayed many an owner's trust in recent years, but he's come up huge when motivated. Will he in fact be motivated with this upcoming chance, most likely being his last shot? Well, let's take a look at the stock market post T.O release and also take a guess at a few potential suitors.

Ranking the Rookie Runners: The Finish Line and Looking Ahead

Let's face it, this year was all about the Rookie RB when talking about fantasy football. Depending on the scoring system for your league, three rookies most likely finished in the Top 10 RB producers. This made for arguably the single greatest rookie RB class in recent memory, not only from a realistic perspective, but also for fantasy purposes.

Is this the new trend and will we lust over the rookie class next season as we prepare for our drafts? Well, let's not jump the gun just yet. However, what we can depend on will be the spiked draft day values of the returning sophomore class. Many of these talents have already become mainstays on the fantasy football horizon.

And so today, we take a quick look back at the season that was, but more importantly gage the values of this heralded class moving forward. Follow along and in order...

Jerry Jones Calls Out Marion Barber for Not Really Being Injured or Tough

Marion Barber's 2008 season hasn't been one for the ages, or even particularly dominant. He's been good, certainly, and the logic that he would have been better if the Cowboys had any semblance of a passing game during the middle of the season certainly exists.

But on the whole, he's had a decent year, providing almost all of the Cowboys offense while Tony Romo was out. And now, with Romo back, Barber is hurt. Only Jerry Jones doesn't really think he's that hurt.
"He can play with that injured toe," Jones said. "He can play with the soreness and a combination of those things. I see nothing that led us to believe he couldn't."
This isn't totally shocking, if only because, well, we're talking about Jerry Jones here, and it's not entirely shocking to hear him call anyone out, especially after a loss.

That being said, this one seems a little unusual, especially when you consider that when watching Barber run, you get the sense that he's one of the toughest backs in the entire league.

This little incident could though, as PFT points out, have some pretty long ranging consequences -- Felix Jones and Tashard Choice both look like pretty capable young backs at this point. However, Marber's got a pretty large deal on the books right now, so it seems unlikely that the team could in any fashion easily swap him out.

Cowboys 34, Seahawks 9: How Costly Was This Win For Dallas?

The Dallas Cowboys did what we all thought they'd do and smash the Seattle Seahawks, 34-9. Tony Romo looked as if he was playing against boys; he had loads of time and picked apart the Seattle defense for 331 yards and three touchdowns. The Cowboys defense sacked Matt Hasselbeck seven times and picked him off once.

After each sack, the player who got it did a turkey dance. Yeah, it was that kind of a joke out there.

The win puts Dallas at 8-4 and, if the Redskins lose to the Giants on Sunday, vaults them into a possible playoff spot. Dallas needs the momentum and the 10 day break as they face the Steelers, Giants and Ravens in their next three games.

However, they could be without running back Marion Barber and linebacker DeMarcus Ware. Barber bruised but didn't break a toe while Ware left with a sprained knee. Barber's injury is huge because he's really the Cowboys only running back. Felix Jones is done for the season and fellow rookie Tashard Choice had had just eight carries coming into today (he carried it 11 times today in Barber's absence).

Injuries to Watch: Week 12

Every week when the dinner bell rings on Friday evening, we'll be here to provide you a comprehensive commentary of the key injuries for the NFL weekend to follow. For those injuries that go right down to the wire, drop by our Fantasy Fanhouse expert live chat from 10:30am to 1pm EST every Sunday and we'll take care of you on those bloody game-time decisions. As always, please feel free to chime in with opinions, updates, and rumors in the comments.

The Atlanta Falcons

Roddy White - This season's superstar bust-out receiver missed Wednesday and Thursday practice with a back injury. The deep back bruise is not expected to cause White to miss time and he practiced on Friday, but keep him in the corner of your eye just in case.

The Baltimore Ravens

Derrick Mason - Despite a partially dislocated shoulder, Mason made good last week with seven catches for 82 yards. He should be good to go this week as well.

The Cleveland Browns

Kellen Winslow - Quickly becoming one of this year's leading fantasy frustrators, Kellen Winslow has not returned to practice despite an MRI indicating no structural damage in his shoulder. While normally the positive MRI would be a good sign, Coach Crennel says the only way he sees the field is if he shows full motion in the shoulder, which I assume means actually practicing. You might be wise to plan on another option should Junior disappoint yet again.

Brady Quinn - Quinn suffered a small fracture his right index finger last week against the Browns. While Quinn played with the injury and should play again this week, this is enough to bench him if you previously considered him for the starting spot this week.

Felix Jones Joins Rashard Mendenhall on Injured Reserve

There was much gnashing and rending when the Cowboys selected Arkansas running back Felix Jones 22nd overall with Rashard Mendenhall still on the board.

In fact, the complaints started rolling in approximately 30 seconds after commissioner Roger Goodell announced the pick. The Dallas Morning News' Jean-Jacques Taylor wrote that, "You don't draft a complementary player in the first round when you have an opportunity to select a franchise back. Ever. But that's what the Cowboys did Saturday."

And Taylor's then-colleague, Albert Breer, added this: "Remember, none of this is anything against Felix Jones. I'm guessing he'll be a good addition to the Cowboys offense. But Rashard Mendenhall will be better. Much better."

Of course, Mendenhall played in four games, and rushed for just 58 yards on 19 carries before landing on injured reserve with a broken collar bone. Jones, on the other hand, scored on his very first carry of the season, and prior to being hobbled by a balky hamstring, he was averaging almost nine yards a carry.

Now, though, Jones has gone the way of Mendenhall: he's done for the year.

Behind Enemy Lines: Redskins and Cowboys Meet Up Again in Different Roles

As we get ready for this week's matchup between bitter rivals Cowboys and Redskins, I exchanged e-mails with Dave Halprin from Blogging The Boys. Dave was nice enough to offer some insights on Dallas for this week's Behind Enemy Lines feature.

If you remember, Dave came in
in Week 4 to break down the first Cowboys-Redskins game. Since then, Dallas has gone from the NFL's best team to one in trouble of making the playoffs and Washington has turned into a Super Bowl contender.

Sportz Assassin: A lot has happened to the Cowboys since their first meeting with the Redskins. What has been the most damaging issue Dallas has had to deal with in that time?

Dave Halprin: Injuries, especially Tony Romo's pinkie. Brad Johnson was a certified disaster at QB for the last three games and we only won the Tampa Bay game because our defense played out of their mind. So his absence has been issue numero uno. But we have other problems, too. The offensive line has had trouble protecting the QB and opening running lanes and our secondary is still hit and miss. We hope that Roy Williams (the receiver) will be ready to really contribute after learning the offense and that will open up things for T.O. who has been getting mugged by defenses. If Felix Jones can play, that will also be a big boost, we've missed his speed over the last few weeks.
