FanHouse NCAA Hoops BlogPoll: No. 13, Miami-FL Hurricanes

This week, FanHouse is taking an early look at the top teams heading into 2008 with a BlogPoll decided on by our college hoops bloggers. To help with the team capsules, we've brought in some of the top fan bloggers around the internets to give us insights on their teams.

Today, we have enlisted Tom Popadak of
Cane Space to break down the Miami Hurricanes.

The Canes are led by Frank Haith who is entering his fifth year as head coach. Canes fans and new UM AD Kirby Hocutt have "Faith in Haith" who signed a five year extension during the off-season and had the Hurricanes ranked as high as No. 19 in the AP Poll last season. In 2007-08, the Canes improved by 10 games over the previous season, beat #4 Duke and finished with a 23-11 record, leading to an appearance in the NCAA Tournament where the Canes managed to advance to the second round of the tourney before losing to Texas.

Frank Haith Agrees to Five Year Deal to Stay at Miami Through 2013

I've had my hat off to Miami Hurricanes coach Frank Haith all season long. After a hellish 2006-2007 season, the ACC media had them picking Miami to finish last in the ACC this year. The Canes responded with a 23-11 record and a win in the NCAA Tournament.

Miami rewarded Haith with a five-year deal to keep him in Coral Gables through the 2012-2013 season:

"Frank Haith has done a tremendous job in elevating the men's basketball program into one of the premier teams in both the ACC and in the nation," incoming athletic director Kirby Hocutt said in a statement Monday. "His character, dedication and relationship with his student-athletes and staff members are beyond reproach, and the University of Miami is proud to have one of the top young coaches in the nation."

"This contract provides stability for this program and gives my staff and I the opportunity, through our recruiting efforts, to build upon the solid foundation we have in place," Haith said. "We will continue our hard work in moving this program forward."

Haith has done one heck of a job transitioning the Miami program into the ACC. In their four seasons in the conference, they've been competitive in all but one of them. Attendance is high and their is much more of a buzz about the hoops team than the football program.

ACC Year End Awards and Honors

With the ACC regular season over and done, it's time to go back and give a few awards for the season.

Player of the Year: Tyler Hansbrough, North Carolina. Only Antawn Jamison, Tim Duncan and Horace Grant have led the ACC in both scoring and rebounding in the same season over the past 25 years. All three of those guys went on to win the Player of the Year in the ACC (two won the national award).

Coach of the Year: Dino Gaudio, Wake Forest. Va Tech's Seth Greenberg or Miami's Frank Haith may win it (and they would deserve it). But Gaudio came into such a tough situation with a team that hadn't been very good lately. Sure, the magic of the win over Duke was dampered a bit with the ensuing four game losing skid, but this was a big year for

All-ACC Team: Hansbrough, Tyrese Rice (BC), DeMarcus Nelson (Duke), Sean Singletary (UVa) and Greivis Vasquez (UMd). Either this was a great year for guards or a poor year for big men. Either way, Rice and Singletary have been the lone reasons to pay attention to either of their teams. Vasquez, a sophomore, has really stepped into his leadership role at Maryland. Nelson fills the customary senior swingman spot on this team. Just like Vasquez, Nelson's leadership has meant more to Duke than his abilities ... and that is saying quite a bit!
