Defunct MISL Should Give Futsal a Try

The Major Indoor Soccer League announced today that it has ceased operations as of last Saturday and is planning to reorganize itself for a relaunch later this year. I think I speak for most Americans when I say, "We still have a Major Indoor Soccer League?"

Well, we had a Major Indoor Soccer League. The team owners say this shutdown is just for housecleaning and restructuring purposes, but they would say that to convince what few fans they still have that they're not dead yet.

Then again, if this league really wants to make a splash on its return, it should abandon its walled-in game and start playing futsal.

I've written here previously about futsal, which is the FIFA-mandated 5-on-5 indoor soccer game. It is played on a basketball-like court without walls, and it emphasizes ball-handling and passing skills much more than the current indoor game MISL plays. If MISL relaunched itself as a futsal competition, it could become a league that develops creative soccer players capable of lighting up MLS (or any other league on this planet) with their skills. The league's teams could also schedule matches against the best clubs and national teams from around the world to attract new fans.

MISL already has a TV deal in place with Fox Soccer Channel. I bet that channel would love to show some futsal to its growing audience. It would be a vast improvement over the current MISL game, which, quite frankly, is painful to watch.

Thugs Ruin Futsal Championship in Brazil

Futsal might be a great way to help players improve their soccer skills, but as this video from last Tuesday shows, it's just as prone to get ruined by idiots as any other sport.

According to FourFourTwo, a group of torcidas organizadas -- basically, a gang of knuckleheads dressed as fans -- sparked a brawl at the São Paulo futsal championship in Brazil, throwing chairs, rushing the court and frightening families who just came to watch the big game. Police fought them off, but the second half will have to be replayed behind closed doors.

The video might remind some of the infamous Pistons-Pacers brawl, but this was worse, because it wasn't just one idiot throwing a beer at another one. It was an entire gang starting a riot because they could. It's more reminiscient of the English hooligan firms of the 80s than any actual futsal match. This sport didn't deserve that.

American Soccer Needs More Futsal

Several weeks ago, Tom Dunmore of Pitch Invasion wrote about his trip to a Major Indoor Soccer League game in this piece for Chicago Sports Weekly, highlighting the curious combination of the world's game with typical American sports glitz.

Soccer purists sometimes sneer at what they see as a bastardized version of the world's game and perhaps fear its ability to draw fans during its long and unappreciated history, seeing it as a competitor to the 11-a-side game. Unlike the outdoor game, goals are at less of a premium, removing one of the complaints often heard about soccer but also upsetting traditional fans.

Tom noted that the MISL's "hectic rock music-fueled extravaganzas" came to influence both the NFL and Arena Football. He also noted indoor soccer in America is very different from indoor soccer in the rest of the world.

In the most successful soccer nation, Brazil, a different variety of indoor soccer with a contrasting style, futsal, has become the most practised form of soccer in the country. ... Futsal, a five-a-side game, is demarked by lines and not walls, thus slowing the pace of the game and demanding more of players technically.

MISL may be the top indoor soccer league in the U.S., but futsal, the indoor soccer game sanctioned by FIFA, is the game American soccer players should be playing. Here's why.
