MMA One Step From Massachusetts Sanctioning, UFC Event in Boston

Sanctioned mixed martial arts fights are one short step from becoming legal in Massachusetts after a bill on the sport sailed through the state's House of Representatives in a 144-10 vote Wednesday afternoon.

Five Things We Learned From UFC 102

Todd DuffeeExperts who study boring things that aim to depress us say you can't learn anything watching TV. I say "bollocks" (which is a word I learned watching the BBC). Watching UFC 102 with a finely attuned eye, there was much to be learned.

Here's my list of five things I surmised from Saturday night's fights.

UFC 102 Undercard Live Blog: Herman-Simpson, Gonzaga-Tuchscherer, More

This is the UFC 102 undercard live blog for all six matches on the undercard, which features Gabriel Gonzaga vs. Chris Tuchscherer, Ed Herman vs. Aaron Simpson, Mike Russow vs. Justin McCully, Todd Duffee vs. Tim Hague, Mark Munoz vs. Nick Catone and Marcus Aurelio vs. Evan Dunham.

FanHouse is live in Portland and will provide round-by-round details of every match. The first bout is scheduled to begin 7:45PM ET.

The live blog begins below.

Shane Carwin vs. Cain Velasquez Likely For October's UFC 104

Shane Carwin and Cain Velasquez have verbally agreed to an Oct. 24 matchup and are likely to meet in the co-main event at UFC 104, sources close to the matchup confirmed to FanHouse.

Reports of the two fighting at UFC 103 appeared in recent days, but the UFC has apparently settled on the following event for the key heavyweight bout which may determine the next title challenger. No bout agreements have been signed, but little appears to stand in the way of the matchup.

Carwin and Velasquez are two of the organization's fastest-rising heavyweights and both boast unbeaten records.

UFC 102: Too Many Good Fights, Not Enough Pay-Per-View Time

The news that a heavyweight fight between Gabriel Gonzaga and Chris Tuchscherer has been officially added to the UFC 102 fight card reminds me of something I've been thinking about for a while now: There are way too many good fights on the UFC 102 card.

Obviously, it sounds ridiculous to complain about too many good fights. But the UFC only puts five -- or at most six -- fights on the live pay-per-view broadcast, and this UFC 102 card, headlined by Randy Couture vs. Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira in the main event, has eight fights that are very pay-per-view worthy.

UFC Heavyweight Star in the Making: Shane Carwin KOs Gabriel Gonzaga

The Ultimate Fighting Championship has a new heavyweight superstar, and his name is Shane Carwin. Carwin knocked out Gabriel Gonzaga in the first round of their fight at UFC 96, firmly establishing himself as one of the elite heavyweights in MMA.

UFC 96 Live Blog: Rampage Jackson- Keith Jardine, Carwin-Gonzaga

This is the UFC 96 live blog of Saturday night's two big fights, Quinton "Rampage" Jackson vs. Keith Jardine and Shane Carwin vs. Gabriel Gonzaga.

To find out who won each fight, check the UFC 96 results post.

For round-by-round results, check out the main event live blog, which begins below.

Shane Carwin's Opponents: 49-42; Gabriel Gonzaga's Opponents: 129-63-7

In a vacuum, Shane Carwin's record of 10-0 (with five first-round knockouts and five first-round submissions) looks like one of the most impressive records in mixed martial arts. But let's dig a little deeper into Carwin's record and that of his UFC 96 opponent, Gabriel Gonzaga.

UFC 96 Weigh-In Results

All 20 fighters made weight today at the weigh-ins for UFC 96 in Columbus, Ohio.

The biggest news to come out of the weigh-ins comes out of heavyweight class: In the co-main event, Shane Carwin weighed in at 259.5 while Gabriel Gonzaga weighed in at 257.5. That's a little smaller than expected for Carwin and a little bigger than expected for Gonzaga, and after a lot of talk leading up to the fight that Carwin would have a size advantage, that wasn't borne out on the scales.

Full weigh-in results are below.

Dana White: Shane Carwin Could Get a Title Shot If He Beats Gabriel Gonzaga

No fighter has more to gain with a great showing at UFC 96 than Shane Carwin. In fact, UFC President Dana White says Carwin could earn a heavyweight title fight if he beats Gabriel Gonzaga on Saturday night.
