Thiago Alves on Facing Georges St. Pierre at UFC 100: 'I Was Born For This'

Thiago Alves and Georges St. Pierre joined the media Thursday for a conference call regarding their UFC 100 welterweight title match.

Suffice it to say, this matchup lacks the venom of St. Pierre's last championship defense against BJ Penn, as both combatants were quick to praise each other.

Alves seemed supremely confident in his ability to topple GSP and emerge with the gold. The huge welterweight, who is in the midst of a seven-fight win streak including victories over Josh Koscheck, Matt Hughes and Karo Parisyan, sounded like he believes a title is his destiny. What follows below is a select list of his quotes.

Even in Losing to Hughes, Matt Serra Proves He's No Fluke

First thing's first. Matt Serra was not robbed at UFC 98. Neither though, did he lose. After two years of back and forth, after injuries delayed their original fight, and after 15 minutes in the octagon, the two Matts were fit to be tied, and their match should have been ruled a draw.

The judges, however, saw things differently. After three rounds, they gave Matt Hughes a 29-28 across-the-board win. They no doubt gave Serra the first round, and Hughes the final two.

The fight was close enough that neither fighter was quite sure whose name ring announcer Bruce Buffer would call.

Edgar, Sonnen and McFedries Among Early Winners at UFC 98

Rising lightweight star Frankie Edgar scored a major upset over former UFC champion Sean Sherk, while Chael Sonnen and Drew McFedries were among other early winners at UFC 98.

In a matchup featuring two lightweight fighters primarily known for their wrestling abilities, Frankie Edgar earned the biggest win of his young career by defeating former champion Sean Sherk in a dominant performance, taking all three rounds on every judge's scorecard.

Sherk, coming off a win over Tyson Griffin in which he out-struck him, opted to stick with his standup, largely staying away from takedowns until late in the third round. That strategy turned out to be a big mistake. Edgar got the best of most of the exchanges, bloodying Sherk's face in the process.

UFC 98: Matt Hughes vs. Matt Serra

Unlike the UFC 98 main event title match, in which anything could happen and we wouldn't really be surprised, the co-main event between longtime rivals Matt Hughes and Matt Serra has a certain level of predictability to it.

Both Hughes and Serra, after all, have been fighting for years and employing their own formulas to success.

What adds the sizzle to this one is the war of words that will finally see a winner emerge. So how will it go down? Let's take a look.

Matt Serra on Matt Hughes: 'I Want to Put Him Into Retirement'

When I interviewed Matt Hughes last week, he made it very clear that he dislikes the man he'll fight at UFC 98, Matt Serra. So when I interviewed Serra, I gave him the opportunity to respond. Suffice to say, Serra doesn't like Hughes, either. That simple fact is what makes their upcoming fight so intriguing to MMA fans.

I also asked Serra about his experiences as both a participant and a coach on The Ultimate Fighter, what he thinks the future holds for his fighting career, and what he'll do when he's done in the Octagon. The full interview is below.

BJ Penn Enlists Infamous Trainer in Preparing for Florian

UFC lightweight champion BJ Penn was soundly defeated by Georges St. Pierre at UFC 94, and then spent time filing a lengthy appeal that went nowhere, but it seems that Penn is finally looking ahead instead of backward.

A full three months before his UFC 101 main-event matchup against Kenny Florian, Penn is in San Clemente, Calif., training with Marv Marinovich at Sport Science Lab, according to a video he posted on his site, BJPenn.com.

Marinovich is a trainer who specializes in speed, power and functional training. He is also well known as the controversial father of ex-USC and Oakland Raiders quarterback Todd Marinovich, a one-time prodigy who saw his NFL dreams fall prey to substance-abuse issues.

Rampage Jackson in His Own World

As Quinton "Rampage" Jackson prepares to fight Keith Jardine in the main event at UFC 95, he says he's not thinking of anything except getting ready for the fight.

When I asked Jackson on a call today whether he watches other fighters and tries to emulate them, he said that for the most part, he does not.

"I'm in my own little world," Jackson said. "I go to fights, but I don't pay attention to names or anything like that. I'm a fighter and I focus on my own fights."

UFC 100: Georges St. Pierre-Thiago Alves, Who Else?

UFC 100 is the subject of constant speculation among MMA fans (even though we haven't even reached UFC 95 yet), so here's a rundown of what we know right now.

MMA Top 10 Welterweights: Georges St. Pierre Can Clean Out the Weight Class

The biggest challenge for the UFC in the next couple of years may be finding legitimate challenges for welterweight champion Georges St. Pierre.

If he beats Thiago Alves this summer, St. Pierre will have defeated almost every real challenger the UFC could give him at 170 pounds: Jon Fitch, Josh Koscheck, Matt Serra, Matt Hughes and even B.J. Penn have been defeated by GSP. I suppose it's possible that the UFC could sign Jake Shields, or throw Mike Swick or Carlos Condit at St. Pierre, but when you look at the list of the top 10 welterweights in the UFC, you see that if St. Pierre beats Alves, he'll have already beaten the best challengers the UFC could give him.
