UFC's Goran Reljic Heard Car Crash in Sea, 'I Dove Into the Water and Punched the Window'

Yesterday we passed along the news, first reported in the Croatian newspaper Slobodna Dalmacija, of the UFC fighter Goran Reljic hearing a car crash into the Adriatic Sea, and jumping out of bed, running into the water and rescuing the two men inside the car.

Today we have more details, as told to UFC.com by Reljic's manager, Zoran Saric:
"Even suffering a severe lower back injury, and without any training and exercise in the past month and a half he risked everything, jumping under cold water and helping save lives," Saric told UFC.com Thursday night. "When I spoke with him earlier today, he said "I wasn't even thinking about my injury or about myself, I just dove into the water and started punching the window; there was only one thing on my mind, to save them."
Good thing Reljic has enough punching power to break a window.

Report: UFC Fighter Goran Reljic Risks Life to Rescue Two Men Who Crashed Into Sea

A story in the Croatian newspaper Slobodna Dalmacija that says the Croatian UFC fighter Goran Reljic risked his life to rescue two men who had crashed their car into the Adriatic Sea.

According to the English translation of the newspaper account that I was provided, Reljic was in bed when he heard the crash, and he jumped out, swam to the car, broke the windshield and pulled the men out. Either the account has been exaggerated a bit or Reljic is a real-life superhero.

Reljic is 8-0 in his pro MMA career, but he pulled out of UFC 90 with a back injury. Apparently it takes more than a bad back to keep Goran Reljic from saving someone's life.

Below, a complete translation of the Croatian article.

UFC 90: Goran Reljic-Thales Leites Scrapped After Reljic Suffers Injury in Training

This month's UFC 90 show has lost a very interesting fight. The undefeated middleweight Goran Reljic suffered an injury and pulled out of his bout with Thales Leites, Fighters Only Magazine reports.

The fight is still listed at UFC.com, but it now appears that Leites will face Drew McFedries instead. That's an easier fight for Leites and a less interesting fight for the fans.

Leites-Reljic would have been the biggest test yet for Reljic, who has an 8-0 record but won seven of those fights against fairly minor opposition. In his most recent fight, a win over Wilson Gouveia at UFC 84 that won Fight of the Night honors, Reljic established himself as a fighter UFC fans want to see, and it's a disappointment that they won't be able to see him at UFC 90.

UFC 84: At Octagonside, the Sights Are Impressive and the Sounds Even Better

Notes on a trip to Las Vegas.

I had a seat about 10 feet from the Octagon for Saturday night's UFC 84 show, and what I'll take away from it, more than anything else, is the sound. Punches land to faces with thuds. Kicks land to sides with thwacks. The Octagon itself turns into a drum when a fighter is slammed to the canvas.

I'll also remember the sheer noise of it all: The fighters' entrance music, the music played between fights, the introductions and the post-fight interviews were all pumped into the MGM Grand Garden Arena at earsplitting decibels. At 31, I must be older than the target UFC demographic, because I spent much of the night thinking the music was too loud. The guy next to me in press row wore earplugs.

My own reactions to the sounds aside, UFC 84 was terrific night of fights. A few other thoughts are below.

UFC 84 Live Blog

It's Saturday night of Memorial Day Weekend. Plenty of people are out partying while I'm here at home in front of the TV. Upset about it? Not at all. I'm looking forward to a night filled with high-quality fighting at UFC 84 from Las Vegas.

I hope you are too because it promises to be a helluva night. The main event, B.J. Penn defending his lightweight title against the former holder Sean Sherk, is well worth the price of admission. Luckily, we get more bang for our buck with Tito Ortiz vs. Lyoto Machida (and Dana White) in Ortiz's final match as a UFC fighter. Yesterday's weigh-in stoked an already raging fire and tonight all could bubble over again. I'm hoping for an Ortiz win, just because the interview would be an absolute classic.

FanHouse's Michael David Smith is at the event, 10 feet from the Octagon he tells me, and reports that it's a wild scene. So kick back, grab a cool one (I'm drinking Imperial, the national beer of Costa Rica!) and join us after the jump.
