[Update: the trade fell through and is dead in the water.]According to the aptly-named MLB Trade Rumors blog, Hank Goldberg of 560 WQAM AM, the Florida Marlins' flagship station, announced that the Marlins have acquired Jacque Jones from the Cubs.
Can we believe it? The South Florida Sun-Sentinel said the trade is not yet official but confirmed it via "a National League source," and the Palm Beach Post went so far as to explain that the Marlins are receiving Jones, "a player to be named and $1 million cash in exchange for a pitcher at Class A Greensboro." It's not known who that pitcher is, but the Post throws out the name of lefty Graham Taylor.
And the Chicago Tribune reports that the Cubs have already made a corresponding roster move to replace Jones on the roster, bringing up reliever Billy Petrick from Double-A Tennessee. Even if the Cubs had to cough up $1 million to make the trade go through, it's still a cost-cutting maneuver as Jones is due $7.12 million over the rest of this season and next.
