With or Without UFC, Roger Huerta Ready for Next Chapter of Life

Roger HuertaEven though he had made mixed martial arts his life, he'd still hear the haters. He'd wake up in the morning to train, eaten healthy, sworn off alcohol, avoided relationships, traveled to events to soak up knowledge and listened to the people who'd already made it.

Slowly, he evolved into Roger Huerta, the fighter. Roger Huerta the person almost no longer existed. Everything was about fighting. Everything. He would tell his trainer Dave Menne, "Here's my life, take it," and then do whatever his coach told him to get better.

It didn't matter. The people who loved him still love him, and the ones who hated him...

UFC Fight Night 19 Salaries: Nate Quarry Leads With $60,000

Nate Quarry

Nine-time UFC competitor Nate Quarry was the top earner with $60,000 at last Wednesday's UFC Fight Night 19 in Oklahoma City, Okla, according to the disclosed salaries Oklahoma athletic commission provided Monday to FanHouse.

Next were main event winner Nate Diaz and former WEC welterweight champion Carlos Condit, who both pocketed $48,000 ($24,000 to show plus another $24,000 for the win).

Roger Huerta Deserves Break From Fighting and Respect of Fans

Roger HuertaIt's hard to believe that after last night's split-decision loss to Gray Maynard, fighting could be in the rearview mirror of Roger Huerta's life. Back around the time that the UFC re-emerged into the spotlight of mainstream media, roughly around UFC 66, Huerta became one of the UFC's go-to guys as a front man and fighter. Now, he's likely on the way out.

Because of his decision, Huerta has faced derision and scorn from some fans and insiders, who would like to revise history and say he was never a "real fighter" and was handed opportunities instead of earning them. They say his decision to leave MMA for acting shows that he was never really dedicated to the sport. But the reality is so much deeper.

UFC Fight Night 19: Gray Maynard Beats Roger Huerta

Roger Huerta returned to the Octagon on Wednesday night and showed that he's still in shape and focused on MMA, but that wasn't enough against Gray Maynard, who defeated Huerta by split decision in a solid fight at UFC Fight Night 19 on Spike TV.

In the first round Huerta looked surprisingly crisp and effective, showing no ring rust at all even though he hadn't fought in more than a year. Huerta appeared to be frustrating Maynard with his boxing, and when Maynard tried to overpower Huerta in the clinch and on the ground, Huerta showed effective defense in getting free.

UFC Fight Night 19 Weigh-In Results

Nate Diaz was the only fighter to miss the mark on his first weigh-in attempt but had extra time to cut the weight and make official his lightweight bout against Melvin Guillard for Wednesday's UFC Fight Night 19 in Oklahoma City.

Diaz initially stepped off the scales at 156.5 pounds, which is half-a-pound over the one-pound allowance, but his second try allowed him time to cut down to 156. Guillard weighed in without needing any allowance at 155 pounds.

The word out of Diaz's camp coming into the weigh-ins was that Diaz was having difficulty getting down to lightweight and hinted at a move to welterweight after this fight.

Gray Maynard Focused on Roger Huerta, Not Lightweight Title

Gray MaynardIf Gray Maynard wanted to, he could make a pretty good case that he deserves to be the No. 1 contender for the UFC lightweight title. After breaking into the UFC on the fifth season of The Ultimate Fighter and knocking himself out in a bizarre no contest on that season's Finale, Maynard has gone 5-0, and he's dominated all five opponents.

But as Maynard prepares to fight Roger Huerta on the September 16 Ultimate Fight Night card, he says he won't lobby for a shot at the lightweight championship, even if he beats Huerta. Instead, Maynard says in an interview with FanHouse that he's putting all his energy into fighting Huerta, and that as long as he keeps winning, he's sure a title shot will come.

UFC Twitter Mailbag: Mike Swick, Big John, Gray Maynard, Junie Browning

UFC Twitter universe had questions this weekend about the state of the UFC welterweight division after Mike Swick pulled out of UFC 103 with a concussion, about the reasons for referee Big John McCarthy staying out of the Octagon, and about a couple of UFC lightweights, Gray Maynard and Junie Browning.

Your questions and my answers in our latest UFC Twitter mailbag are below.

Friday's live chat starts below at 1PM ET.

MMA Top 10 Lightweights: B.J. Penn Is the Best, Then There's Everyone Else

In B.J. Penn's seven fights since returning to the UFC in 2006, he's 4-3. That record doesn't even come close to telling the story of Penn, the most dominant lightweight fighter in MMA history.
