Who Fits as Stewart's New Teammate?

Tony Stewart apparently just had to scratch that itch -- you know, that itch that Dale Earnhardt Jr. scratched enough in 2007 to find his way to Hendrick Motorsports.

And now that we know that Tony (or at least we think we know) won't be piloting the No. 20 Toyota in 2009 for Joe Gibbs Racing in favor of owning his own team, we need to look at Stewart the team owner/teammate. In other words, who is going to work best with Stewart as a teammate in 2009?

Let's start with the most-rumored candidate, "Flyin' Ryan" himself:

Ryan Newman - Newman seems to make the most sense for a number of reasons. Newman is a fellow Hoosier like Stewart, has a dirt track and open-wheel background just like Stewart, and he's in the final year of his contract with a struggling Penske. And, oh yeah, dude is fast.

Newman has 43 career poles and 13 wins -- including the 2008 Daytona 500. You put Newman into a fast car, and he can put you in victory lane. He's also got some pretty sweet wrestling moves, too. The only thing he doesn't bring is a sponsor package, though it wouldn't be hard to find one.

Martin Truex Jr.
- Truex could be next great defector from the idling ship that is Dale Earnhardt Inc. With one career win coming last summer at Dover, Truex made the Chase for the Championship in 2007 but his chances don't look as good this time around.

Wednesday Not Good for Haas-CNC Racing

They probably knew it was coming, but probably not to this extent.

Haas-CNC Racing, which fields NASCAR Sprint Cup cars No. 66 and No. 77, had more than just a book thrown at them Wednesday as NASCAR levied the penalties for rear-wing mount infractions stemming from last weekend's race at Lowe's Motor Speedway.

The penalties, for both teams, included:
  • 150 Driver points from Johnny Sauter and Scott Riggs
  • 150 Owner points from the No. 66 and No. 70
  • Six week suspensions from Sprint Cup Series racing for both crew chiefs and car chiefs
  • $100,000 fine for crew chiefs "Bootie" Barker and Dave Skog, each
  • Both race cars will not be returned after NASCAR confiscated them Friday at LMS
I think you can call that getting the entire library thrown at you.

In all, having rear-wing brackets that weren't correct -- Barker maintains he's used them all season -- just cost the team roughly a three-quarters of a million dollars.

I understand NASCAR's desire to clean up the sport and prevent teams from skirting the rules, but costing a team $750,000 seems a little overwhelming, considering the stats the Haas-CNC teams have put together in 2008.

Smoke Movin'? SI Links Stewart, Haas CNC

Tony Stewart's contract is set to expire in 2009 at Joe Gibbs Racing, and apparently that "bone of contention" -- according to Sports Illustrated -- has shuffled the deck for the two-time Sprint Cup champion.

So much so, in fact, that SI is saying sources have told them that Stewart is already negotiating a contract with Haas CNC Racing. In other words, SI is claiming that Tony Stewart is leaving Joe Gibbs Racing for greener pastures at Haas in 2009:
Sources tell SI.com that Stewart is working on the final stages of a deal to move from Joe Gibbs Racing to Haas CNC next season. Considering the ramifications of such a move, no one's admitting anything quite yet, as you'd expect. When reached for comment, Haas CNC Racing spokesman Ron Mench claims there's been no communication between Stewart and the organization. Stewart's PR spokesman Mike Arning was noncommittal ("I've heard what you've heard," when asked about Haas CNC) but he reminded SI that Stewart's contract with Gibbs runs through the 2009 season.
"Noncommittal" is not a word that I'd want to be hearing if I were a Tony Stewart or Joe Gibbs Racing fan. "Noncommittal" seems to always mean that something other than what was anticipated is in the works.

Yes, my friends, Tony Stewart's contract has officially become a major issue for the Sprint Cup garage to handle heading to Talladega Superspeedway for Sunday's race.

But does this report really mean anything? You can bet we'll find out -- either solidly or with body language -- this weekend at Talladega. Stewart, who has started driving Toyotas in 2008 after JGR's switch from Chevrolet, has been decidedly against discussing any contract concerns with the media.

Perhaps there was a reason behind that?

What say you? Is Tony movin' or stayin'? Would Haas (with its Hendrick Motorsports support) be a good fit for Stewart?

Musical Chairs at Haas CNC, Bill Davis

For the guys who apply the name decals to the Haas CNC No. 66 Chevrolets and the No. 36 Bill Davis Racing Toyota, Monday brought plenty of new work.

Jeremy Mayfield will replace Jeff Green in the No. 66 immediately after departing Bill Davis' ride. He'll be there in 2008 as well.

With the No. 36 BDR ride available (and lacking a sponsor in '08), Davis hired a pair of Craftsman Truck Series drivers with past Cup experience to finish out the year.

Johnny Benson and Mike Skinner will split those duties. Skinner gets the gig at Atlanta this weekend and then at Texas Motor Speedway while Benson will wrap up the year at Phoenix and Homestead.

With Scott Riggs already announced as a Haas CNC driver for 2007, the driver lineup will completely change at Haas with both Jeff Green and Johnny Sauter on the way out it seems.

Busch, Sauter Fail Postrace Inspection

Following Denny Hamlin's victory in Sunday's Lenox Industrial Tools 300, NASCAR found that two of his competitors were riding a little low.

The Chevrolets of Kyle Busch and Johnny Sauter both failed postrace technical inspection on the left front side, according to the Charlotte Observer.

NASCAR spokesman Ramsey Poston said both cars would be taken to NASCAR's research and development center in Concord, N.C., to confirm the measurements taken at the track.

The teams face potential penalties if the violations are confirmed, but Poston said they would not be considered along the same lines as other penalties for "tampering with the car of tomorrow."

Hendrick Motorsports could now have three crew chiefs -- yes, count 'em, three -- sidelined due to technical violations. A points penalty for Sauter would put him right on the edge of the top-35.

Rubbin' is Racin': Lapped Cars Get to Fight, Too

I'll set the stage.

Ryan Newman, with a good car, was three laps down after a flat tire. Jeff Green, also not on the lead lap, was sitting in the beneficiary position, ready to get a lap back on the next caution.

NASCAR drops the green flag after a caution for Juan Pablo Montoya's crash on lap 75 with Jeff Gordon in the lead.

Ready? Go.

Earnhardt Jr. Calls Presser to Announce Future. Again. Maybe.

We interrupt our regularly scheduled programming to bring you the latest chapter from the As the World of Dale Earnhardt Jr. Turns.

The NASCAR media has again been called to attention. (Had we stopped paying attention?)

Junior will hold a press conference tomorrow at 11:00AM at his JR Motorsports shop to announce ... well, he didn't tell us.

But we have an idea.

So what's it going to be?

Gibbs? Ginn? Officials from both teams say they're not involved in the news conference.

Hendrick? They have no comment.

RCR? Couldn't be reached for comment.

Things that make you go hmmmmm.

Haas/CNC?

Hall of Fame Racing?

JR Motorsports?

Or something we haven't thought of yet?

Got any last minute predictions?

Speed TV will interrupt their regularly scheduled programming to carry the conference live at 11:00AM. Geoffrey Miller will interrupt his regularly schedule life to live blog the conference in the Fanhouse beginning at 10:30AM.

Update: ESPN's Marty Smith is reporting that his sources are saying that Kyle Busch will be out of the #5, as the Fanhouse previously predicted.

I know nothing is for certain 'til we hear it tomorrow, but this is Marty Smith talking, not Jerry Bonkowsi. And Busch's attorney had some very interesting comments:
"A lot of things may or may not occur. Out of respect for Hendrick Motorsports, we're not really sure what's going on yet. But we're trying. I don't think anything's changed yet. I cannot tell you that Kyle is out of the No. 5 for 2008."
