On Saturday night, Strikeforce put on its first MMA show of 2009, and on Sunday night Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker talked to me about how he thinks the first show went and where he sees Strikeforce going in 2009.

Among the topics we discussed were the success of Nick Diaz, the future of Frank Shamrock, the weight of Cris Cyborg (and her likely future fight with Gina Carano), as well as the possibility that big names in MMA including Kimbo Slice, Tito Ortiz, Royce Gracie and Fedor Emelianenko could fight in the Strikeforce cage. About 15 seconds into Saturday night's Strikeforce MMA fight between Hitomi Akano and Cristiane "Cris Cyborg" Santos, Akano had Cyborg in position for a judo throw. But while Akano is a skilled judo practitioner, it didn't matter. Cyborg was so much bigger and stronger that she simply threw Akano against the cage. And I was immediately reminded of Kramer fighting little kids.

Cristianie "Cris Cyborg" Santos's fight with Hitomi Akano on Saturday night's Strikeforce card, was supposed to position Cyborg as the opponent to Gina Carano in the biggest women's MMA fight ever. Instead it has positioned Cyborg as a fighter too unprofessional to make weight for her fights.

In what could be a major blow to Strikeforce, a women's bout scheduled for Saturday between Cristiane "Cris Cyborg" Santos and Hitomi Akano is on the verge of being scrapped after Cyborg couldn't even come close to making weight on Friday.

Strikeforce will put on its first MMA event of the year Saturday night at the HP Pavilion in San Jose, and the fights will air on Showtime.

But watching on TV isn't the only way to see the fights if you won't be in the arena. It might not even be the best way.
