Denver QB Situation Getting Dire

While it was thought there would be a transition for the Broncos offense this season, no one could have imagined the nightmare the Broncos may be facing in Week 1 of the 2009 season. In January, the Broncos had a Pro Bowler at the helm. In July, they had Kyle Orton, with Chris Simms backing him up. Now, it's entirely possible they head into Cincinnati on Sept. 13 with Tom Brandstater as their starting quarterback.

So, Maybe Culpepper Won't Be a Chief

If there was ever a situation to describe the Kansas City Chiefs of late, it is today's talk of the team looking at Daunte Culpepper. Talks, possible workouts and now nothing, as the Kansas City Star's blog Red Zone is reporting that the talks have settled and nothing more should happen between camps.

Culpepper would be an obvious upgrade to the quarterbacking core they're stuck with now, but of course the buck stopped right around hopeful and here is what Kansas City has to look forward to.
If the Chiefs don't sign a passer this week, they'll enter the Jets game with banged-up veteran Damon Huard, second-year quarterback Tyler Thigpen and Ingle Martin, who coach Herm Edwards said Sunday wasn't ready to lead the Chiefs offense.
Unless Culpepper was the person to snuff this idea out, why wouldn't they give him a shot? His career quarterback rating of 89.9 would have the three-time Pro Bowler ranked 15th in the league this year, a position that would exponentially improve the Chiefs situation.

Now they're going after former Tampa Bay quarterback Bruce Gadkowski, who in 11 games starting in 2006 had nine interceptions and six lost fumbles. The thought behind this is mind-boggling. You're bringing in a below average quarterback when you already have three below average or inexperienced quarterbacks on your roster?

I guess the Chiefs front office expects a lot more injuries before the season ends. If that is the case, bravo.

Titans Likely to Snag Chris Simms as Vince Young Insurance

Chris Simms thought he was going to be a Patriot, but he found the door slammed in his face when he got up to Foxboro. Now he's found another landing spot.

Fox Sports.com and numerous other media outlets are reporting that Simms will sign a deal with the Titans, likely tomorrow to fill the need for a backup now that Vince Young is out for at least two, and likely at least four, weeks.

As one comes in, another heads out--practice squad quarterback Ingle Martin realized that if the Titans aren't going to add him to the active roster now, he's not likely to be added to the roster any time soon, so he bolted to join the Chiefs, who will be without their starter Brodie Croyle for a couple of weeks.

Simms hasn't taken a snap since rupturing his spleen in 2006, but he's fully recovered. In his one season of extensive action, he had more touchdowns than interceptions, which is something Young hasn't been able to do in his first two seasons.

By signing Simms, the Titans now have one of the deepest groups of quarterbacks in the league, but there's also an argument until Vince Young gets his act together, there really isn't much difference between the Titans No. 1 quarterback (Young) and the new No. 3 (Simms). Even if he never takes a snap this year, the Titans will also get a chance to take a good long look at him and decide if he can be the team's long-term backup if the team decides that 35-year-old Kerry Collins is getting too old.

Second Half Collapse Costs Packers Victory

Although only 10 points were scored, the Green Bay Packers dominated the first two quarters against Jacksonville last night. Brett Favre (14 of 20 for 130 yards) seemed to be on the money with every single throw, while the tight ends, one of the Packers biggest concerns headed into the regular season, proved to be very effective.

Rookie wide receiver James Jones also had an extremely impressive night, hauling in six catches for 80 yards. His routes were run well, his cuts were decisive and crisp and his hands were soft. He really has the makings of a quality NFL wide receiver and I can see why Favre has raved about him this offseason. Unfortunately, he may become heavily relied on much sooner than anyone expected.

Starting wide receiver Donald Driver was carted off the sidelines with a foot injury, but the severity of that injury has not yet been determined.

"He's in good spirits," McCarthy said of Driver. "So we'll have more information tomorrow."
It would be potentially devastating to the Packers season if Driver was lost for any significant period of time.
