NFL FanHouse Mock Draft 1.0

The draft has become one of the biggest events of the year for NFL fans. Maybe because everybody's a winner on draft day, or maybe because hope springs eternal and all that. Whatever the reason, we're fully trying to horn in on the action. Hence our first FanHouse mock draft of the '09 offseason. And we'd like to stress "mock."

Waiver Wire Wonders: Week 13

Weeding through those unwieldy waiver wires requires a keen eye and a quick trigger. Thus, Waiver Wire Wonders provides a weekly snapshot of players worthy of consideration who should be available on a good portion of league waiver wires. Enjoy those pickups...

At first glance, this week's options on the waiver wire look a bit like Michael Strahan's teeth: few and far between. Not to worry though, because upon digging a little deeper, we have uncovered a few nice pickups despite the slim pickings. This week's list of waiver wire wonders illustrates a couple of nice noobs on the list, but the better part of our list consist of repeat offenders who solidified themselves as legitimate options given surrounding injuries or changing situations that favor their output for the rest of the regular season.

Domenik Hixon (WR, Giants) -- Clearly, the absence of the Thuggish Ruggish Burress leaves a big void in the Giants passing game, which today looked to benefit Amani Toomer and Domenik Hixon about equally. Although Toomer scored the touchdown, going forward, Hixon looks like the guy with the most upside. He has consistently worked his way into a bigger role in New York and Plaxico's impression of David Silver's friend, should seal the deal. Today, Hixon caught five passes for 71 yards and we can expect bigger games to come.

Mark Clayton (WR, Ravens) -- Don't get your hopes up, this isn't one of those acid flashbacks we've all been patiently awaiting. Despite the fact that it might seem like 1985 given all the talk this season about Dan Marino and now Mark Clayton, this is the new Mark Clayton and today he caught five passes for 164 yards and a long 70-yard touchdown. If that wasn't quite enough, he threw his own 32-yard touchdown pass to really juice the fantasy numbers. Clayton also caught a long touchdown last week, so he might be an interesting add at this point as he is establishing himself as a big-play receiver.

Is Torry Holt Seriously Considering Leaving the St. Louis Rams?

There was some nervous laughter surrounding Torry Holt's recent comments about him becoming a Carolina Panther (see the video above ... the comments below). Holt was at a golf outing in North Carolina just after his brother Terrence signed with the Carolina Panthers.
"I wanted to send in my resignation to the the Rams and see if I could join him," the elder Holt joked. "I'm excited, but I'm also a little jealous because I've always wanted an opportunity to come back home."

Holt is from Greensboro, NC and was a star at NC State. There was some joking there, especially when the word "resignation" was thrown in.

However, it has to be a bit concerning to the Rams that Holt said this, especially as he enters the final two years of his contract. He's had a rocky relationship with head coach Scott Linehan and just witnessed the unceremonial exodus of fellow receiver Isaac Bruce this offseason.

Recent comments threw some more fuel on the fire ... especially since he name dropped the Panthers again.

Rams at Bengals: They Can't All Be Winners!

To get you ready for week 14, FanHouse is previewing all 16 NFL games. Here is your Rams-Bengals preview.

2007 Records:

St Louis Rams: 3-9 (4th in NFC West)
Cincinnati Bengals: 4-8 (t-3rd in AFC North)

Last Week:

Rams 28, Falcons 10
Steelers 24, Bengals 10

Why We Care: In a weird way, the Rams are scorching hot. After losing their first 8 games of the season, St. Louis has won three of their last four. Also, this is only the 11th meeting between these two franchises ... with the last Bengals win way back in 1993. Both these teams have had down seasons, but at least one of us thought the Rams could have been in the Super Bowl.

City's Best: St. Louis' Top Five Athletes

FanHouse is posting the top five current athletes for America's top 25 cities with the following criteria: 1) Who would a St. Louis sports fan say is his/her favorite athlete? 2) Would the player's name (or face) be familiar to locals who don't follow sports?

Find your city's top five:
ATL | BOS | CHA | CHI | CIN | CLE | DAL | DC | DEN | DET | HOU | IND | LA | MIA | MIL | MIN | NO | NY | SF | PHI | PHO | PIT | SD | SEA | STL

Marc BulgerI lived in St. Louis briefly, but in my time there I quickly realized 1) I love toasted ravioli; 2) everyone says they're from St. Louis but no one actually lives in the city; and 3) it's a helluva sports town. To get a current reading on who's hot in STL athletics, I polled my friends Mike Rainey of the Post-Dispatch and Chris DeGroat of The Checking Line -- these are their consensus picks:

5. Jim Edmonds: He probably would've ranked higher on this list a couple of years ago, but he's not exactly aging gracefully. He's still good for a handful of highlight worthy catches a week in center field ... though that's in part because he's just not getting to quite the same number of balls that he did in the past.

4. Scott Rolen: His swing isn't quite as sweet as it used to be, but his hot corner defense is still golden. And considering a lot of fans have (fairly or not) never completely accepted Tony La Russa, Rolen's grudge with the skipper last season probably didn't hurt his image one bit.
