On Sunday, FOX ran a cartoon on its NFL pregame show making fun of Jessica Simpson for being fat and Tony Romo for dating a fat chick. Hilarity did not ensue. And after reflection, on Wednesday FOX apologized.

Jessica Simpson and Tony Romo are easy fodder for NFL fans, writers and teevee personalities. There's no question that their tabloid-style romance made for easy commentary across the media spectrum.

However, based on this YouTube posted by NBC-DFW's Drew Margary, it appears that Fox is taking things a little too far. (At least judging by their readership: 45 percent were feeling "furious," 30 percent were "laughing," and 14 percent "didn't know what an internet was," which sounds about right when talking about Cowboy fans.)

On its face, it sounds implausible. No way Jessica Simpson, singer, "actress," inspiration to millions ... of preteens, would date a third-string quarterback. Particularly given that her last relationship was with the face of the Cowboys, Tony Romo.

But then I remembered that she was married to Nick Lachey, who was known more for hanging out with Matt Leinart than he was for his musical talents as a member of 98 Degrees. So maybe there is something to the rumor that Simpson and Colt Brennan (No. 3 on the depth chart, No. 1 in the hearts and minds of Redskins fans) are a couple.

This should go over well: former NFL quarterback Rich Gannon ranks the NFC East quarterbacks and he thinks Tony Romo is the best of the bunch. It's hard to get worked up about such lists since they have absolutely no bearing on how the season will unfold. But that's not the point, at least for fans of the Eagles, Giants and Redskins.

Anyway, here's what Gannon said on Sirius NFL Radio (via the Dallas Morning News' Todd Archer):

You thought you were tired of Tony Romo and Jessica Simpson, didn't you? After all, the awesomeness of seeing a celebrity dumped the night before her birthday seemed like a fitting end for one of the more annoying relationships in tabloid history (seriously; this is sports people -- it's serious and real and not about gossip, okay?).

But the Romessica party isn't over yet, folks. In fact, if you happen to frequent the website of one US Magazine -- which I found vis a vis the NY Daily News because I don't read that mess, right? -- then you might realize things are getting more interesting. Well, assuming "interesting" involves "Romo banning Jessica from his house."

I think Jessica Simpson could be Tony Romo's undoing. And by extension, the Dallas Cowboys. The couple called it quits two weeks ago, and now Romo has spent his time between the golf course and making bizarre Fantasy Files commercials with BFF Jason Witten.

Oh, wait. That's just Redskins tight end Chris Cooley clowning Witten while his brother Colt Brennan (!) pretends to be Romo. (At least I think that's his brother Colt. The mask makes it hard to tell, although the throwing motion is spot-on Tony-tastic.*) Whatever, good times for everybody except, well, Cowboys fans who will probably have trouble seeing the humor. Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo is an accomplished golfer. In the past, he's just missed qualifying for the U.S. Open, shot 84 at Torrey Pines the week before the 2008 Open, and played with Tiger Woods in the AT&T National Pro-Am two weeks ago. He also logged a third-place finish at last year's Lake Tahoe Celebrity Golf Championship

So it's not all that surprising that he would be leading the event after one round this time around. Romo has 27 points in the modified Stableford format (thanks to seven birdies, three of which game on the first four holes), two points ahead of former Major League pitcher and mustache enthusiast Rick Rhoden, a seven-time winner at Tahoe.

Tony Romo and Jessica Simpson are reportedly no longer dating, having broken up some time at the end of last week, according to a breaking newz report today in PEOPLE magazine.

Bars -- even ones named "Have a Nice Day Cafe" -- are required to keep certain hours, based on state-to-state laws. You really don't want to try and bribe them to stay open longer, because if they get caught, they'll be shut down. So, really, there's little-to-no interest for them in staying open late, unless the financial compensation exceeds what they make over the course of several years.

Which would probably explain why Anthony Spencer failed in his attempt to keep the Indianapolis HANDC open after hours.

New York Giants quarterback Eli Manning will get to enjoy a bye for the first week of the NFL postseason. His brother, Peyton, will lead his Colts into San Diego to take on the Chargers this Saturday night.

So, during a conference call, Eli was asked if he was going to San Diego to watch Peyton's game:

"No, no, no plans," Manning said. As an afterthought, Manning added: "My plans to Cabo fell through, so I am going to sit here. That is a joke, by the way."

That, obviously, is a jab at Tony Romo's vacation to Cabo during last year's playoffs. The Dallas Cowboys had the No. 1 seed in the NFC last year and an off week, just as the Giants do this year. Romo spent his off week in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico with Jessica Simpson and her family. Romo's Cowboys would go on to lose to Eli's Giants the very next week.
