'JVR' Makes Major Push for Flyers' Spot

FanHouse's Christopher Botta reports from Flyers training camp.

VOORHEES, NJ -- A year in the minors may be the logical next step in the development of James van Riemsdyk.

The young man, though, is giving the Flyers plenty to think about.

Flyers Sign James van Riemsdyk

The Philadelphia Flyers were an unmitigated disaster in 2006-2007. Because of that, they made a rare appearance in the NHL Draft Lottery, and drew the second pick.

The decision was made to draft a promising American-born forward named James van Riemsdyk with that second pick. At the time, it was a slice of history, because never before had Americans gone one-two in the NHL Draft (Patrick Kane went first to Chicago). Unlike Kane, van Riemsdyk did not go directly to the NHL.

Martin Biron Fumbles Game for Flyers

This will certainly help the goaltending situation in Philadelphia. With the Penguins and Flyers tied, 4-4, late in the third period, Martin Biron came charging out of his net in an effort to steal a loose puck away from Pascal Dupuis.

With the puck in his glove a good 30 feet from his crease, Biron attempted to throw the puck out of his glove, presumably to avoid a delay of game penalty. He probably would have been better taking the penalty.
