For the past nine years the Harold Pump Foundation, created by David and Dana Pump (known as the gurus of high school and college basketball) has raised over $3.5 million dollars to fight cancer. The foundation's efforts have not gone unnoticed. Major stars such as Magic Johnson, Paul Pierce, Sugar Ray Leonard, Pete Sampras and Denzel Washington have all joined the Pump brothers. Tyler Hansbrough Should Become North Carolina's All-Time Leading Scorer Tonight

North Carolina is one of those programs whose history drops jaws. Just the names of the players that have come through Chapel Hill are amazing. Michael Jordan. James Worthy. Sam Perkins. Billy Cunningham. Phil Ford. Antawn Jamison. Walter Davis. The list goes on.

By the end of the night, none of them will have scored as many points for the Tar Heels than Tyler Hansbrough. Psycho T is just nine points away from passing Ford and become the all-time leading scorer in UNC history. The Tar Heels host Evansville tonight.

When records fall, there are two stories to follow. One is the greatness of the player who is toppling the record. We all know about Hansbrough and what he has meant to the Carolina program. But the second story is about the record itself and who held it.

It is amazing that Ford has kept this record since graduating in 1978. Again, guys like Jordan, Worthy, Perkins, Jamison, Vince Carter and more have came and went since Ford. Sure, most of the best scorers since 1978 have left early for NBA riches (I think that Joseph Forte would have owned the record if he hadn't left after his sophomore season) but that shouldn't diminish the record.

Tyler Hansbrough Wins Sporting News Award; Will Have His Jersey Retired

UNC forward/center Tyler Hansbrough will be the 8th player to have his jersey retired by the university. Psycho T won the Sporting News Player of the Year award, one of the six awards that gets your number retired in the Smith Center rafters.

"It truly is something special to have accomplished," Hansbrough said. "In fact, it's kind of hard to sit here and talk about how it feels to be put in the same category as the players who are up there already."

"There will never be another one just like him," North Carolina coach Roy Williams said. "I am so lucky to be his coach. For the rest of my career, I will be able to look up into that first row and see his jersey ... and I know that will bring a big smile to my face."

Now you may be thinking, "but they have a bunch of jerseys hanging from the rafters". True, but those numbers aren't retired (both Kenny Smith and Rasheed Wallace's #30 hangs there; current Heel Wayne Ellington wears #22, which hangs in the rafters twice). Those players are acknowledged for being named to the All America team. Since Hansbrough has already been an All American, his jersey was already set to be up there. Now his number will be retired, too.

Random YouTube Magic: 1982 UNC Tar Heels Highlights (Matt Doherty Is Still a Nerd Edition)

It's hard to believe it's been 26 years since Dean Smith won his first NCAA championship against the John Thompson-led Georgetown Hoyas, but yep, it's been that long.

Arguably one of UNC's best teams ever -- Sam Perkins, James Worthy and freshman Michael Jordan were all starters -- coached by arguably the best coach ever. Joining Smith on the sidelines: Bill Guthridge, Roy Williams, and Eddie Fogler. Not a bad group of guys to start a basketball program with.

Anyway, courtesy of the YouTubes here are the highlights from that season, culimating in The Shot -- you know, the one the seemingly solidified MJ's career path. Oh, yeah, one more thing: enjoy the Genesis soundtrack. That's so ... 1980-something.
