Michael Phelps Proves He's Not Great at Everything; Bombs Badly as SNL Host

There have been many athletes that have appeared on Saturday Night Live. And relative to other miserable on-stage performances, most of them have been pretty funny.

Okay, so most of them haven't been that great. But Derek Jeter's Taco Hole is absolutely killer and Peyton Manning might have been the funniest person on the show -- no, I'm not just talking hosts -- since Will Ferrell left.

Expecting that sort of show from Phelps seemed a bit aggressive. Being funny, after all, on live national television is not easy. But there's a big difference between not being funny and just being flat-out unentertaining and, well, flat.

Phelps was both on Saturday. One skit was funny and it drew on the softball Michael Phelps Diet joke, but that didn't matter since anyone with any sensibility (or charged with reviewing this FAIL-fest) had already turned off the television, since it came at the very end of the show.

Ryan Howard Is Now Pitching ... Sandwiches

As the reigning NL MVP, Ryan Howard is clearly one of the best values in all of sports: he's making just $900,000 this year, which is a lot of money for someone like you or me, but just a small fraction of what a player of his caliber is truly worth. (Case in point: Albert Pujols, Howard's runner-up for the MVP, is making more than 15 times what Howard is earning this year.)

With that in mind, it's good to see Howard pulling in some extra pocket change with off-field endorsements. Starting tomorrow, you can see him hawking Subway sandwiches next to everyone's favorite former fat guy, Jared Fogle. From the Philadelphia Daily News:
Like several of the other ads Fogle does with athletes, he and Howard stand beside each other in front of a table laden with a couple of Subway subs and one of the competition's sandwiches. Howard looks like a natural, shooting his fingers at the camera as Fogle introduces him, then at one point feigning a swing as he says that all the meat in the sub "fills me up, so I can hit the long ball."
Sounds riveting. If you're in Philly, it should air at some point during Saturday's Yankees-Red Sox tilt. With any luck, the commercial will be a hit and he can expect receptions like this every time he stops by for lunch:
