No details about the severity just yet, but I do know that
Rafael Furcal apparently injured his leg in today's spring training game against the Orioles. From Tony Jackson's
Inside the Dodgers Blog:
One batter into the game, Baltimore's Corey Patterson hit a high pop to shallow center. Furcal went out, Repko came in. Repko made a diving catch, and Furcal jumped over him to avoid a collision. It was when Furcal came down from that short jump that he landed on his left ankle and remained on the ground for several minutes before trainer Stan Conte finally drove him off the field on a cart, with assistant trainer Todd Tomczyk holding Furcal's ankle motionless in the flat bed of the cart. This looks bad right now. Really bad.
Jackson seems to think it's more of an ankle injury for Furcal. Ken Gurnick on
Dodgers.com thinks it's more of a
general leg injury. Either way, the injury as described sounds like it could leave the Dodgers with a huge hole at shortstop -- anytime a player is carted off the field you have to take it seriously.
Between the
shoulder injury, and now this freak injury -- it's just not Rafael Furcal's spring.
Update: The
preliminary diagnosis is an ankle sprain, but Furcal is getting X-rays.
Jason Repko is on crutches and is scheduled to have an MRI tomorrow.
