Fantasy Football Team Preview: Panthers

Carolina Panthers Fantasy PreviewWith Fantasy Football season ready to kick in high gear, FanHouse is here to preview each and every team -- one per day until we've done them all.

Meet the ...
Home of Smash and Dash. Why is that important? Because that's the nickname of DeAngelo Williams and Jonathan Stewart, one of the most prolific running back combinations in the NFL last year. Oh, yes, and in case you didn't see the Jake Delhomme Meltdown Party against the Arizona Cardinals in the playoffs last year, the running game is mildly important to the Panthers success.

Carolina Panthers: Still Jake's Team

Because the NFL season never ends, we present our 2009 Offseason Roadmaps for front offices to navigate through the summer.

John Fox and Marty Hurney headed into 2008 with their jobs on the line after an underwhelming 2007 that featured a whole lot of Mittens and not a lot of excitement in Charlotte. They decided to throw caution to the wind and play for "now" by trading their 2009 first-round pick for a chance to pick up both Jeff Otah and Jonathan Stewart in the first round of the draft.

With a healthy Jake Delhomme, Julius Peppers finally deciding to care, a road-grading offensive line and a rejuvenated Smash and Dash running game that featured DeAngelo Williams and Stewart, the Panthers surprised some people by winning the NFC South and looking like a Super Bowl-caliber squad.

Officials Not Doing the Panthers Any Favors

The lead story of Saturday night's Dallas Cowboys win over the Carolina Panthers will be the status of Terrell Owens' injury. However, many will talk about the tough calls against the Panthers during the game.

The two biggest calls were on huge passing plays in the 4th quarter. The first came on a long pass attempt from Matt Moore to Drew Carter that Cowboys CB Jacques Reeves broke up. The replays showed (and it was quite obvious to the naked eye) that Reeves held up Carter as he lept to break up the pass. No call. That was on 3rd down and would have sent the Panthers offense to mid-field.

The second was on a pass that Steve Smith seemingly caught, was knocked to the ground and the ball came squirting out. The official who was standing on top of the play ruled it complete. Then the other officials joined into the discussion and changed the call to an incomplete pass. Carolina challenged the call but referee Mike Carey ruled that since Smith was knocked to the ground, it was incomplete. Huh? Smith caught the ball, both his feet touched the ground, he was hit, he fell to the ground and then the ball squirted out. How in the world is that incomplete? Even Chris Collinsworth (who sheepishly said he guessed it was a good call) wasn't too sure during his analysis of the play with Bryant Gumbel.

King Catching Everything in Panthers Camp

Fifth-round picks are going to have a large impact for the Carolina Panthers this year, and not just the fifth-round pick Carolina traded to Chicago for safety Chris Harris. (Gee, do you think Marty Hurney saw C.J. Wilson and Deke Cooper practicing with the first team yesterday and thought, "Hey, maybe I should call somebody?")

But enough about safeties. This is about tight ends -- specifically, second-year man Jeff King, the fifth-round pick in 2006 who reportedly "continues catching everything thrown his way." I had expected Carolina to draft a tight end early, but they stood pat with King, and that may yet prove to be a pretty good plan.

"He's a workaholic," quarterback Jake Delhomme said. "Jeff King is one of those guys that, before you know it, he's in the league for 10 years. That's the truth. I don't want to put pressure on him, but you can see it early with most guys."

The big question, though, may be how much Delhomme will remember to look for King in the new offense. He almost never looked for the tight end in the old offense. Will Jake remember that the tight end is an option in the passing game? If so, the Panthers' short game could prove much more effective than it has been in recent years.
