Here's your strange video of the day: UFC fighter Tito Ortiz and his girlfriend, porn star Jenna Jameson, standing on the sidewalk, surrounded by paparazzi, when a homeless man approaches and asks Ortiz for money. Ortiz decides to give him a lecture instead of a handout.
Longtime Ultimate Fighting Championship star Tito Ortiz left the organization in May and said he would sign on with another mixed martial arts organization soon. But various rumors of Ortiz signing with various other promotions have come and gone, and Ortiz still isn't under contract to sign with anyone.
Now we learn that Ortiz's longtime girlfriend, retired porn star Jenna Jameson, is pregnant with the couple's first child, and that has me wondering: Might Ortiz just quit fighting to be a full-time dad?
Ortiz certainly doesn't need to fight for financial reasons. He made plenty of money in his UFC career, and Jameson, who founded the adult entertainment empire ClubJenna, earns the real bread in the family. And Ortiz isn't the same fighter he once was: He hasn't won a fight in almost two years, and he might be wondering if he wants to keep putting his body on the line. Jameson told Us Magazine that she and Ortiz are "so happy" and "still in a state of shock." Fatherhood tends to change people's perspectives on life, and with Ortiz becoming a father and dragging his feet on getting back into the fight game, you have to wonder if he's going to quit the sport for good.
When asked if he liked having an ex-porn star, Jenna Jameson, for a girlfriend, Ortiz explained that the fact that Jameson is no longer in the porn business is important to him.
"I like ex-porn star," he said. "She got out of it. That's why I'm with her, is she got out of the business. I couldn't date a chick who did porn."
But he added that he has nothing personally against pornography: "I love watching porn, I can't say I'm not a watcher because I'm a watcher before I dated her, I can't say I'm not. I'm an average guy."
I don't know where former Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous host Robin Leach gets the information for his blog, but I wish he'd stop. He's going to give responsible bloggers a bad name.
I was there, and I wouldn't really care that Leach gets his information wrong, but when responsible media outlets like the Los Angeles Times then repeat that information, I feel the need to offer a correction.
I had a seat about 10 feet from the Octagon for Saturday night's UFC 84 show, and what I'll take away from it, more than anything else, is the sound. Punches land to faces with thuds. Kicks land to sides with thwacks. The Octagon itself turns into a drum when a fighter is slammed to the canvas.
I'll also remember the sheer noise of it all: The fighters' entrance music, the music played between fights, the introductions and the post-fight interviews were all pumped into the MGM Grand Garden Arena at earsplitting decibels. At 31, I must be older than the target UFC demographic, because I spent much of the night thinking the music was too loud. The guy next to me in press row wore earplugs.
My own reactions to the sounds aside, UFC 84 was terrific night of fights. A few other thoughts are below.
Jameson said she was pleased that the fans supported Ortiz, that she thinks Ortiz will be the star of another MMA organization now that he's leaving UFC, and that she feels both scared and proud when she watches him fight.
UFC star Tito Ortiz, flanked by his girlfriend, porn star Jenna Jameson, gave a brief interview in which he bashed UFC President Dana White and shared his thoughts about Kimbo Slice:
"I'm not retiring. I'll be fighting for at least another three years," Ortiz said, before adding, "I'm done with the UFC, I'm done being taken advantage of. I'm done with being disrespected. I've been in the sport for 11 years. I gave them a third of my life and they give me no respect....
"It just shows that the president, Dana White, is full of himself. His biggest victim is himself. I think he's going to be a person who's going to ruin the company."
Ortiz said inaccurately that EliteXC has signed with NBC (it actually signed with CBS), but he sounds like he'd like to join EliteXC, as he spoke highly of Slice, EliteXC's biggest star. Ortiz and Jameson inform us that their dog's nickname is Kimbo Slice because, Jameson said, "he looks like him."
Big ups to The Big Lead for finding this ESPN video in which Jenna Jameson sees whether she knows more about her boyfriend, UFC fighter Tito Ortiz, than his best friend does.
I'm kind of amazed that ESPN is using its web site to promote a porn star and an athlete in a sport that ESPN doesn't have a contractual relationship with, but I'm not complaining.
