Damage Control: Cracked Hasselbeck

Matt Hasselbeck injured
Did the injury bug hit your fantasy football team like it was a car windshield moving at 100 mph? If so, it may be time to do some Damage Control.

Fantasy Football Cut-N-Go: Seattle Gets An Edge, Bucs Opt for Committee

Whenever the NFL's active rushing leader signs with a new team, that must be the big fantasy news of the day. Seattle decided to further muddle its backfield by inking former Colt and Cardinal Edgerrin James. While it appears a deal hasn't been finalized yet, all indications are that James will soon be signed with the Seahawks.

As of Tuesday, Edge wasn't at practice with the Seahawks, according to the Seattle Post Intelligencer. Also missing from practice was T.J. Duckett, who hasn't been cut from the Seahawks yet but looks to be the odd man out in Seattle once James finalizes his contract.

Fantasy Football Cut-N-Go: Bulger Fractures Pinky, Other Non-Favre News

Brett Favre obviously dominated the news today, and the injury to Chaz Schilens is also fantasy-worthy. I wouldn't touch Favre in any but the deepest of fantasy leagues, and I'd definitely suggest keeping Schilens in the back of our minds for the stretch run. Potential Fantasy Defensive Juggernauts

Curtis LoftonThe increase in popularity of Individual Defensive Player (IDP) leagues was easy to see coming. After all, why break down offensive players individually by position yet group all defenders as a team? Of course, when IDPs come into play, the defense can't be just an afterthought.

Sleeping on defenders while other teams amass high-sack guys like James Harrison and DeMarcus Ware, or consistent 100-tackle linebackers like Patrick Willis or Ray Lewis could leave you high and dry at critical positions. You wouldn't be stuck with Donald Driver and Devin Hester as your top two receivers, would you?

However, it'll get to that point in the draft where 20 or 30 defenders are off the board at a certain position, and you need to add a sleeper or two to your IDP core, someone who has the ability to finish in the top ten at their position. Today, I'll examine a few potential breakouts at each position -- hopefully, you'll add one or two of the good ones on draft day.

Buccaneers Sign Angelo Crowell

After releasing Cato June and Derrick Brooks to open the offseason, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers have quite a need for some help at the linebacker position. Apparently, they're not only willing to scour the free-agent market, but also think outside the box -- or blindly throw darts at the wall, depending on your perspective -- when it comes to improving the position.

On Wednesday, the team signed free-agent linebacker Angelo Crowell, formerly of the Buffalo Bills, to compete for the strongside linebacker spot. The Buccaneers also plan to move safety Jermaine Phillips to weakside linebacker.

Buccaneers Re-Sign Jermaine Phillips, Jerramy Stevens

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers continued their busy offseason on Thursday afternoon by re-signing safety Jermaine Phillips and tight end Jerramy Stevens. Terms of the deals were not disclosed.

Phillips has spent his entire seven-year career in Tampa Bay, and is coming off an injury-shortened season in 2008 where he registered 59 tackles and three interceptions. He's going to be returning to a slightly different defense from the one Tampa fans have been accustomed to over the years, thanks to a new defensive coordinator (Jim Bates) and several new starters.

Injuries Continue to Mount for Tampa Bay, Jermaine Phillips Done for Year

After dropping two consecutive NFC South games, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers are in need of some good news. Unfortunately, that's not going to happen at the moment, as head coach Jon Gruden announced on Monday that safety Jermaine Phillips will be lost for the season with a broken forearm.

Even worse, linebacker Derrick Brooks, who is the NFL's very own iron man, suffered a rib injury in the loss that is "very concerning" to Gruden. Not exactly what the doctor ordered for a team that's still desperately fighting for one of the final playoff spots in the NFC.

Two weeks ago Tampa Bay was sitting with a 9-3 record, on top of the NFC South. Now, the Buccaneers find themselves in a three-way battle with Dallas and Atlanta for the two NFC wild card spots, and they're losing players almost as fast as they're losing games.

With running back Earnest Graham already out of the lineup, the Buccaneers had to rely on backup quarterback Brian Griese in Sunday's loss to Atlanta thanks to a calf injury to starter Jeff Garcia. Now comes the news of Phillips and Brooks, and, well, that's not good news for Tampa Bay.

What is good news for Tampa Bay, however, is the fact it closes out the season with home games against San Diego and Oakland.

Buccaneers 23, Saints 20: Tampa Bay Stops Drew Brees

Despite the possibility of tornado's, and a steady monsoon-like rain throughout the day, the Buccaneers and Saints managed to score 43 points as Tampa Bay kept pace with Carolina in the NFC South, pulling out a huge 23-20 win.

The win improves Tampa Bay to 9-3 on the season, and sets up a huge contest with Carolina next Monday, in a game that very well could decide the NFC South title.

So, while Drew Brees finished the day 25-of-47 for 297 yards and a pair of scores, he also threw three interceptions, including a brutal pick over the middle, in a tie game, with just over two minutes to play in regulation. Jermaine Phillips picked off the Brees pass, returning it 13 yards to the New Orleans 17-yard line.

Three plays later, Matt Bryant booted a 37-yard field goal for the eventual game-winning score.

The Saints final possession ended when Brees threw his third pick of the day, this time when Phillip Buchanon stepped in front of a pass intended for Lance Moore.

While Brees was tossing interceptions, he received absolutely no help from his running game, as the Buccaneers dominant (and extremely underrated) run defense held the Saints to just 44 yards on 18 carries. Their longest run of the afternoon was nine yards.
