Great Moments In Penguins vs. Capitals Playoff History

Thanks to the events of Tuesday night, as the Capitals and Hurricanes advanced in their game 7 victories, the Pittsburgh Penguins and Washington Capitals will be taking part in a playoff series that could very well consume us all. We've seen playoff series' get hyped before, but nothing will come close to the tidal wave of Sidney Crosby and Alex Ovechkin coverage that is about take the NHL by storm. Consider yourselves warned.

Before we look ahead to the madness, let's take a few minutes and remember the glory days of one of the best playoff rivalries the 1990's ever produced.

Canadians Prepare for Hockey Overdose

If the Americans had any plans to invade Canada and swipe our oil, water, and Celine Dion DVD reserves, today would be a great day to do so.

Why? Well, it's Hockey Day in Canada, the day where about 85% of the population will be glued to CBC, watching 12 straight hours of hockey stories, games, and other special features.

If you are one of those Americans fortunate enough to get CBC, here is what you can look forward to. To the rest of you, prepare to be jealous. Haha, just kidding. You can watch the action online at CBC's website.

12 pm ET CBC'S Hockey Day in Canada
3 pm ET Game1: Detroit at Toronto
6:30 pm ET Scotiabank Hockey Tonight (Pre-Game show)
7 pm ET Game 2: Montreal at Ottawa
7 pm ET Game 3: Edmonton at Calgary
10 pm ET Game 4: Colorado at Vancouver

In today's connected world, we are spoiled to have access to plenty of games most any day of the week. What makes Hockey Day in Canada so special is all of the extra stories, features, and interviews that CBC does. They will be doing a feature on Joe Juneau (whom we talked about yesterday) and many other grassroots players and organizations that normally wouldn't get a lot of press. Remember, the sport of hockey is more than just the NHL and a bunch of rich businessmen and spoiled players.

Now, I have to prepare my couch's ass groove for a day of hard sitting.

Goodfellas: Joe Juneau's Northern Exposure

Joe Juneau was never your typical alpha-male NHL hockey player. While most prospects sweat their way up to the NHL through junior teams and small towns in Canada, Sweden, or the Czech Republic, Juneau decided to work his way up via a very unusual route: The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. Yeah, Not exactly a hockey hotbed, is it?

In addition to his hockey exploits at RPI, Juneau graduated with a 4.0 grade point average and earned a aeronautical engineering degree in just three years. He's definitely smarter than the average bear, and used those wicked mental skills to rack up 416 assists in 828 NHL games during a very underrated career.

I guess it's not much of a surprise, then, that Juneau has worked hard to combine academics and hockey in his post-NHL days. Rather than invest in real estate, wineries, golf courses, or Canadian Hockey League (CHL) teams, which are en vogue amongst today's ex-NHL players, Juneau used his presence and wealth to invest in people.
