Giants Begin Roster Trim by Releasing Veteran Safety Will Demps

You will not find one Giants 53-man roster projection without Will Demps' name on it, but they would all be wrong. In a rather shocking decision by Coach Tom Coughlin, the New York Giants have decided to part ways with the six-year veteran safety.

12:01 p.m. S Will Demps has been cut, his agent, Tony Agnone, has confirmed. Agnone said the team will give Demps an injury settlement for his dislocated elbow.
Demps struggled in his first season with New York, but many attributed that to the continued recovery of a serious knee injury. Unfortunately, he never really got it going in training camp and was eventually demoted to the second team before going down with a dislocated elbow in week two of the preseason.

Other Notable Cuts: Kick Josh Huston, quarterback Tim Hasselbeck, cornerback E.J. Underwood, cornerback Gerrick McPhearson and defensive tackle Jonas Seawright.

Update: The original report was partially incorrect. The Giants placed Demps on IR, but are soon expected to reach an injury settlement with him, essentially setting him free.

Giants Training Camp Notebook: Eli Manning Excels; Three More Injured

Giants Training Camp Notebook is a cliff notes style post aimed at giving Giants fans up-to-date news about the most recent training camp practices.

- Injury problems continued to hound the Giants yesterday. In a matter of mere-moments they had to cart two, count them, two players carted off the field. The first was linebacker Gerris Wilkinson, who appeared to injury his right knee in 9-on-7 drills. The second was offensive lineman Todd Londot, who hurt his left ankle in the same drill. To make matters worse, safety Gibril Wilson also had to sit out with back spasms.

- There was some good news that came out of yesterday's practices, however. Quarterback Eli Manning looked very impressive and was making a lot of quality throws.

- Rookie wide receiver Steve Smith continues to blow people away. He had another great day of practice yesterday which included an "amazing catch" for a touchdown over Kevin Dockery.

Giants' Jonas Seawright Slowly Losing Pregnancy Fat

New York Giants defensive tackle Jonas Seawright openly admits that he failed to live up to the hype last season. Coming out of training camp he was thought to be the stuff of imagination. Teammates said he was unblockable while fans had already written his legend.

So what happened? Seawright will tell you ... You know what, let me just give it to you in his words.

"I was fat and out of shape," said Seawright. "I had just had a kid."
That's right, Seawright was fat and out of shape because of the baby he just pushed out of ... well, I'll leave that up to your imagination.

OK, so we know that Seawright really didn't have a baby [by himself]. But on the plus side, it is nice to see him embrace the situation and work hard to get into playing shape. While the Giants don't necessarily need another defensive tackle, stiff competition is never a bad thing.

More Tar Heel NFL News: The Good, Bad, and Ugly

New York Giants offensive lineman Jonas SeawrightThe Good:
After spending the 2005 season on the New York Giants' practice squad, former UNC defensive lineman Jonas Seawright (pictured) has made the final 53 man roster. A solid outing in the Giants' pre-season game against the New England Patriots helped solidify his spot.

The Bad:
Former North Carolina running back Jacque Lewis was released by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers after spending last season in NFL Europe. Lewis only received two carries during pre-season games, so it's no real shocker that he was let go. He's likely to continue his stint overseas.

The Ugly:
Former Tar Heel defensive end Tommy Davis broke his elbow in a goal-line practice drill about a month ago and will spend the 2006 season on the New Orleans Saints' injured reserve list. This is both good news and bad news in that he will continue to be a part of the Saints organization, but he won't be eligible to play this year.
