Remember when Rickie Weeks was a hot new prospect whose quick bat drew comparisons to Gary Sheffield? Yeah, turns out that was four years ago.

Following season after season of frustration for hopeful fantasy owners, Weeks is finally coming through. Major League Baseball is in the early stages of investigating player agents who may be connected to the sport's steroid scandal.

When you drafted Ryan Theriot as your shortstop or middle infielder, you were doing so for average, runs and steals. You were planning on getting no power from him, and rightfully so. Entering 2009 he had only 7 career home runs in over 1,400 major league at-bats. He only hit 5 home runs in 2,048 career minor league at-bats. At 29 years old, why would he all of a sudden develop power?

In news that probably means a lot more to fantasy baseball players than real baseball fans -- with all due respect to the Pirates and their true fans -- Ryan Doumit is going to miss the next 8-10 weeks. He'll be undergoing wrist surgery and have some pins inserted. As fantasy owners, we must march on and look at how to replace the production of a very solid offensive catcher.

Ahhhhhhh... Opening Day!

It's one of the finest days in professional sports. Free agents have been signed. Rookies have busted their humps to make the big club. And now we get to see where the chips will fall.

Now that just about every team has one game in the books, let's look back and talk about some fantasy implications that can be drawn from Opening Day. This first day of baseball offers us only a minute sample size to read from. But there are story lines already developing.

It's only one game but...
Did you see what youngsters Jordan Schafer and Emilio Bonifacio did? Schafer hit a home run in his first Major League at-bat (the 99th player in history to do so). He was 2-3 on the night as his Braves team sent a message to the World Champion Phillies that the NL-East wasn't going to be a cake walk. Bonifacio also hit a home run in his first game of the season. His was an inside-the-park job as this kid has speed to burn. Bonifacio was 4-5 with three stolen bases as he hushed the critics that said he was too immature to handle the leadoff role in Florida.
