Fantasy Football Team Preview: Panthers

Carolina Panthers Fantasy PreviewWith Fantasy Football season ready to kick in high gear, FanHouse is here to preview each and every team -- one per day until we've done them all.

Meet the ...
Home of Smash and Dash. Why is that important? Because that's the nickname of DeAngelo Williams and Jonathan Stewart, one of the most prolific running back combinations in the NFL last year. Oh, yes, and in case you didn't see the Jake Delhomme Meltdown Party against the Arizona Cardinals in the playoffs last year, the running game is mildly important to the Panthers success.

Bears Shouldn't Stop With Cutler, Pace

After the Bears made the announcement of their franchise-shattering acquisition of Jay Cutler, they didn't rest. Within a few hours, they announced they had also agreed to terms with venerable left tackle Orlando Pace. I'll admit, I was overly excited about the two new Bears, as were all my Bears fans friends -- which is weird, usually at least one of us disagrees about player movement. Make no mistake about it, though. We aren't delusional. This team is far from complete and the die-hards know it.

With the team still a decent amount below the salary cap and several holes left to fill for 2009, here's what I think the Bears should do.

Ken Lucas to the Bears a Good Idea

The news that Orlando Pace paid a visit got most of the headlines, but the other free agent who visited the Chicago Bears on Monday, cornerback Ken Lucas, is the one who strikes me as exactly the type of player the Bears need to sign.

Like Pace, Lucas has some downsides: He's a veteran on the wrong side of 30 who was released by his former team in a salary-cap move. But I believe Lucas would be a better signing for the Bears because he's younger (he just turned 30 in January) and less prone to injury (he started all 16 games for the Panthers in each of the last two seasons).

Ken Lucas Finally Cut by Panthers

Ken Lucas was, for all intents and purposes, already on his way out of Charlotte -- the Panthers tried to trade him to the Detroit Lions, even though he declined to leave.

And today, he's officially gone; Carolina cut him from the team's roster.
"Ken Lucas has been a very valuable player for us over the last four years and played an important role on two playoff teams during that span. Ken is a true pro and we wish him the very best," general manager Marty Hurney said in a release issued by the team. "This year, we have re-signed some veteran players and this move means some younger players will have an opportunity to step up."

Panthers' Lucas Won't Accept Trade to Detroit, May Get Cut

NFL players typically don't have "no-trade clauses" in their contracts. Instead, the few players who are traded either have no leverage, are whining about their contracts and want new ones, or are so desperate for a change of scenery that they'd go practically anywhere.

In the case of Carolina Panthers cornerback Ken Lucas, he probably wishes he had leverage. Of course, having virtually no leverage apparently didn't stop Lucas from nixing a trade to a team he doesn't want to play for.

Panthers 30, Saints 7: Carolina Defense Shuts Down Saints

What a difference one week makes in the NFL.

Last week, the Carolina Panthers were getting smashed in Tampa Bay, 27-3. This week, they put the wood to the New Orleans Saints, 30-7.

When Panther fans tell you that they are a legit Super Bowl contender, they point to games like this. Carolina was simply awesome. The double-barrel rushing attack was on point; Jonathan Stewart and DeAngelo Williams split carries and totaled 134 yards. Steve Smith finally looked amazing with 122 yards receiving and a 39-yard touchdown grab under two defenders that I'm still not sure how he caught.

The defense was beautiful as well. After giving up a Saints touchdown to start the 2nd quarter, Carolina shut down New Orleans. Julius Peppers, Thomas Davis and Ken Lucas were everywhere as they held Drew Brees to just 231 yards.

How about this: only three Carolina penalties.

Panthers' Defense Shines in 24-9 Win Over Rival Falcons

If the Carolina Panthers are going to get back into the playoffs, they will need to continue their defensive intensity. Carolina held the NFL's leading rusher Michael Turner to just 56 yards and didn't let young Matt Ryan get comfortable in their 24-9 over the Falcons.

Their offense had quite a day, too. Jake Delhomme threw for 294 yards and two TDs (one to each Steve Smith and Muhsin Muhammad). After Smith's touchdown, he gave the ball to cornerback Ken Lucas. It was Lucas who Smith pummelled during a training camp fight that led to a two-game suspension for Smith.

With Smith getting a ton of attention from Atlanta, Muhammad looked like the player from his first go around in Charlotte. He caught eight passes for 147 yards and a huge touchdown in the fourth quarter to put the game away.

You'd swear that this was 2003 again and Stephen Davis would run out on the field at any moment. Panther fans will just have to do with the combo of Jonathan Stewart (who scored his rookie leading fourth TD) and DeAngelo Williams. The two equally shared duties and combined for 109 yards.

Steve Smith Scores a Huge Touchdown, Almost Coughs It Up Then Hands It to Lucas

Steve Smith is your new all time Carolina Panther career leader in touchdowns scored. It happened on a medium in that saw him sitting wide open, followed by a broken tackle and then some zipping towards the end zone.

Of course, it wasn't all that easy, because Smith slowed down heading into the end zone and nearly had the ball DeSeaned by a pair of defenders (although he wasn't heavily showboating just waltzing) before falling down into the end zone and spiking the mess out of the ball.

The sideline crew got the ball back from the fans and quickly put in Smith's hands. It is after all, a pretty memorable ball in terms of what it represents for Smith's career.

And Smith did the classy thing (which I actually kind of called: "What if he gives the ball to Lucas??!?!?") by running straight to number 21, who he previously punched in the face, and gave it over to him.

Does it make up for sticking Ken Lucas in the jaw during training camp? Um, no. But it does show that the Panthers have more or less moved past the preseason incident, at least on the face of things. Smith might not be remembered by the general public as a classy individual -- the announcers haven't even mentioned giving the ball to Lucas, amazingly -- but he's a better guy than a lot of people give him credit for, and that showed today.

Ken Lucas Talks About Steve Smith Punching His Lights Out, Just Glad He Wasn't Killed

Twelve days ago, Steve Smith punched Ken Lucas in the face. The Panthers subsequently suspended Smith for two games and Lucas got a broken nose -- not to mention the emotional scars -- for his troubles.

Smith eventually apologized, Lucas accepted, and Karma even made an unexpected appearance. And now, almost two weeks after Smith went all "Westbrook", Lucas is finally ready to talk how he was able to forgive the guy who rearranged his face.

The Charlotte Observer's Tom Sorensen spoke with Lucas prior to yesterday's practice and got right to the point:

FanHouse NFL Season Preview: Carolina Panthers - No One Feels Comfortable

Training camps are underway, the NFL season is a month off, and to get you ready for 2008, FanHouse previews all 32 teams, "heat index" style. We'll rate each club in 10 categories on a scale of 1 to 10, high score wins.

Quarterback: Jake Delhomme is coming off Tommy John surgery so no one knows what to expect. At the end of 2006, some fans wanted someone new at quarterback. Before he was injured in 2007, he was off to a white-hot start. How he recovers will go a long way to a successful Panthers season. Matt Moore filled in nicely late last season and may be the team's future. Brett Basanez isn't ready for prime time. No more Vinny or Mr. Mittens. Heat Index: 5

Running backs: The Panthers have been looking for a Stephen Davis type back and may have found one in rookie Jonathan Stewart. He's the kind of bull coach John Fox likes to center his offense around. DeAngelo Williams will be more efficient as a change-of-pace back. Brad Hoover is back again as an effective fullback. Nick Goings is always around to back up anybody. Heat Index: 5
