Alfredo Angulo Faces Harry Joe Yorgey

It appeared that the setting could not have been better on that final day of May, when 26-year-old Alfredo Angulo seemed to be on the verge of a transitional moment in his young professional boxing career.

For not only did the 154-pounder boast a spotless record at 15-0 with 12 knockouts, but the Mexicali, Mexico, native had steamrolled his way through 11 consecutive knockouts entering that junior middleweight bout at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Hollywood, Fla.

Angulo's opponent was Kermit Cintron, an ex-welterweight (147 pounds) champion who was just two bouts removed from a sixth-round knockout loss to former titlist Antonio Margarito.

Paul Williams Pursues WBC Champ Sergio Martinez

Paul Williams, a two-time welterweight and one-time junior middlweight champion, will likely face WBC champion Sergio Martinez on Dec. 5 in Atlantic City, his promoter, Dan Goossen, said Friday.

Goossen is pursuing Martinez (44-1, 24 KOs) for the 154-pound clash instead of WBO champion Sergiy Dzinziruk (36-0, 22 KOs), whom he was also considering.

"I would say that we're working toward trying to finalize Martinez. The site, I don't have yet," said Goossen of a man who battled former world welterweight champion Kermit Cintron to a 12-round draw in their clash for the WBC's interim title in February.

After 34 Bouts, Cintron Fights For First Time In Native Puerto Rico

Former IBF welterweight champion Kermit Cintron will face Juliano Ramos on Saturday night in a junior middleweight bout in Roberto Clemente Stadium in Carolina, P.R.

Now a resident of Houston, the 30-year-old Cintron (31-2-1, 27 KOs) returns to the city of his birth to face Ramos (15-2, 12 KOs), a Brazilian who has not fought since losing by sixth-round stoppage to Mike Jones in August 2008.

It will be Cintron's first fight on his native soil.

"Throwback" Paul Williams on Kelly Pavlik, Floyd Mayweather, Others

FanHouse caught up to rising middleweight, Paul Williams, in Westminster, MD., on Friday night where the man generally considered to be among boxing's pound-for-pound best watched a stablemate on a local fight card.

A 28-year-old, southpaw with two-fisted power and, usually, an incredible energy level and punch output, "The Punisher" Williams (37-1, 27 knockouts) has twice won WBO titles at welterweight (147 pounds) and one at junior middleweight (154). Williams will appear with 27-year-old, World Boxing Council and World Boxing Organization middleweight (160) champion, Kelly Pavlik (35-1, 31 KOs) at Tuesday's press conference announcing their Dec. 5 clash at Atlantic City's Boardwalk Hall.

Kermit Cintron, Sergio Martinez Stay Undefeated* After Draw

Kermit Cintron and Sergio Gabriel Martinez fought to a majority draw on Saturday night in a strange fight that most observers believe Martinez should have won. And yet two judges scored the fight a draw, allowing both fighters to say they're still undefeated*.

Yes, it's true, they're not really undefeated. Cintron is 30-2-1 while Martinez is 44-1-2. But Cintron's two losses were both to Antonio Margarito, and Martinez's only loss was also to Margarito. And now that Margarito has been banished from boxing for putting a hard, plaster-like substance into his hand wraps, every single boxer who has lost to Margarito can legitimately claim that their losses should be ruled no contests.

Antonio Margarito KOs Kermit Cintron

Antonio Margarito knocked out Kermit Cintron in the sixth round tonight in Atlantic City, dominating him throughout the fight and finally finishing him with a brutal body shot.

Tonight's fight was similar to the first fight between the two, in 2005, which Margarito won with a fifth round TKO. Margarito wins the IBF welterweight title and improves to 36-5; Cintron, who beats everyone he fights except Margarito, falls to 27-2.

Throughout the fight, Cintron repeatedly bent over in close quarters, and as a result Margarito's punches landed to the back of Cintron's head. Cintron complained to the referee about those punches, and the ref did warn Margarito, but he never took a point away, and with good reason: Cintron's bent-over style was giving Margarito little choice but to throw punches that would occasionally connect on the back of the head.

Margarito may next fight Miguel Cotto, who fights later tonight on the same card. Among welterweights, Floyd Mayweather is the undisputed champion, but Cotto-Margarito would be a very good fight for the title of the best welterweight after Mayweather.
