NBA Essentials, Starring David Lee, the Dubious Policeman

NBA Essentials provides the must-see links, quotes and videos of the day.

-- David Lee recently appeared on PBS's The Electric Company, apparently co-starring with the GEICO gecko's less successful brother. If this NBA thing doesn't pan out, maybe Lee fall back on acting? I'm dubious about that.

Gerald Green Takes His Cupcakes to Houston

The Philadelphia Inquirer's David Aldridge reports Minnesota has agreed to send Gerald Green to Houston for Kirk Snyder and a second round pick. Green was considered a major piece of the Kevin Garnett deal, but has not gotten many minutes under Randy Wittman.

Green's from Houston -- he has the entire city skyline tattooed on his arm. So, um, I imagine he's happy about the move. Snyder's contract is small and expires this summer, so (unless Minnesota could've actually gotten something for Green) neither team really loses anything. Potentially, Houston gains some scoring prowess off the bench (even though they have Luther Head and Steve Novak, neither of which gets too much run).

The world loses the fantastic comedic tandem of Gerald Green and Rashad McCants, though. R.I.P., indeed.

Too Many Players in Houston

Houston refuses to admit its roster is too full of point guards, as Shoals relayed yesterday. But by the end of the month, the Rockets will be forced to reconcile the sheer numbers signed up for 2007-08.

As TrueHoop noted Monday, Houston has an insane number of guaranteed contracts. There's the core returning club of Tracy McGrady, Yao Ming, Shane Battier, Rafer Alston, Steve Novak and Luther Head. They resigned Dikembe Mutombo and Chuck Hayes, and Bonzi Wells opted to stay put. Houston brought in Luis Scola, Mike James and Jackie Butler via trades, and signed Steve Francis. Aaron Brooks and Carl Landry were drafted and signed. Kirk Snyder is a good young player who is owed $2.3 million, and both Justin Reed and John Lucas III have guaranteed money. Bob Sura will go away due to injuries, but Houston will have to pay him at least $1 million first. That's 19 players under contract, and 18 who are legitimate rotation players in the NBA.
